- F4 Phantom starting engines and taxiing out for take off in Cleveland, Ohio during the 2011 Cleveland Air Show. The plane was on the ramp with the Thunderbirds at CLE during the weekend and this video was when it was departing for practice.

Still the coolest looking plane after so many years. A shape that will never be forgotten or mistaken for any other aircraft. It set so many records and advanced our field of fighter aircraft with it's technologies of the time. Always great to be able to experience one close up, they are so rare now and they used to be so prevalent at every base.
So sad to think many were used as target drones
My dad flew those in Vietnam. He passed away Oct. 2019. Rest In Peace Pops.
Mine passed away 5 years ago. Korean War combat vet. Godspeed to your dad and mine.
Those flying tanks ruled the skies of Vietnam and gave the best CAS there was to offer.

I'm proud to say I served on the last two Carrier med deployments with that last New J & S versions of the Navy phantoms.
You are correct. Its an awesome piece of military hardware but I can tell you from experience, its was not built for ease of maintenance. Not that many fighters were!
I love the F-4, mainly for it’s awesome engine noise on idle, military power, and full afterburner. I am so glad to have a gunship 3 flight simulator game with an F-4 in it!

This jet first flew in the mid-fifties, at twice the speed of sound. Fifty years earlier, it was eight horsepower, wood, cloth, and wire. Amazing.

The Phantom has always been one of my favourite fighters! It is so versatile. It was the best in its day and has BAD ASS looks!

Always loved the Phantom. My dad used to work for McDonnell-Douglas in St. Louis. Once in a while the company would have an open house and the employees' families would get tours of the facilities that didn't have special clearances required. The bay doors would be open and they would have some of the aircraft lined up on the outside ramps. If you stayed long enough, you'd be in for a treat when one of the jets would take off, or especially if the Air National Guard was flying that day, we'd get to see several take off. We also used to park in a public parking lot across the highway from the airport (in the good old days) and we would sometimes sit in that parking lot for hours waiting for some of the jets to take off! Great memories!

I started working at McDonnell Douglas in 1978 bldg -100
I worked on the F-4 center fuselage on the top section worked for about a year and got laid off then 2 years later came back and worked in bldg-2 on the F-18 side panels and nose barrel then worked F-18 finial assembly then got laid off again came back a year later to bldg-100 on finally assemble AV8B Harrier then it moved to bldg-2 work there for a bit and then put in for a transfer to the Flight line and went to bldg-45 F-15 that’s the last stop for the planes this is where the planes get delivered from. I also worked bldg-42 X-P department. Boeing bought the plant and built a smaller flight ramp on the east end of the airport and we all moved to the new bldg-75. I also over the years worked bldg-60 a little bit. I retired in 2014
I remember the Missouri Air Guard which used to be across the airport flying the F-100, then F-4’s then later they had the F-15 though they are no longer there anymore sadly. I also remember the parking lot that you spoke of where people would sit and watch the aircraft takeoff & land which is no longer there anymore sadly.

Ex 51st Tactical Reconnaisance Wing "Immelman" German Airforce here. Its now beeing more than 30 Years that last i worked as a jet engine Mech in those Phantoms in Maintenance Group. But still and till today and unto my last breath on this Earth , whenever i just hear or see a Phantom passing over or just see those unique twintrails in the sky , i am good dammned proud and its still a hell of an aircraft!!!!!!

As I was growing up, F4's flew over my house every day. The windows rattled but you got used to it after a few years. They were so loud but as a kid I marveled at their raw power and they symbolized death for the bad guys in my mind. Fantom 4 baby. "I am the Great Santini. I come from behind the moon, out of the dark, unannounced. Watch out!"
I was in VMFA-312 when the Great Santini was made a MCAS Beaufort, SC in 1979. All the F-4Js in the movie are from our squadron: even the supposed Navy ones in the opening air to air fight scene. The movie isn't shown very often, but I did see it again not too long ago. A few stood out to me while watching it. For one, Robert Duvall plays a Marine Lt. Col. CO perfectly in that movie. Secondly, in many of the flight scenes you can see some planes with the older J-79 engines that smoked quite a bit in low throttle settings. This was the scourge of many an F-4 pilot over North Vietnam as it gives away their position for miles around. Of course, the F-4 was originally designed as a pure interceptor and an enemy target would never have seen the plane "theoretically." We were transitioning to the new smokeless engines at that time, which is quite evident in the flying ACM scenes. Finally, there is a scene where Duvall is talking to the pilots in the ready room before a mission. That scene was shot in our actually ready room, but all the pilots are enlisted Marines who worked in maintenance on the planes used in the film. They are just wearing the aircrew's flight suits for that shot. Right after that movie we were the first Marine F-4 squadron to deploy to West Pac on the first of MANY MANY "unit rotation" deployments to Japan and the Far East. Upon returning, we had a "Rapid Recall" deployment to NAS Key West to intercept Cuban Migs interfering with the Mariel Boatlift in April 1980. I was discharged as a SSgt in Oct 1980 after almost 8 years in the Corps. Worked on F-4Bs and F-4Js in 5 different Marine Corps fighter squadrons. The F-4 was an awesome beast of a plane. But it was also VERY very maintenance dependent. While I was in, only the Air Force F-106 Delta Dart took more maintenance hours per flight hour to keep it in the air.

Those corporate jets looked out of place parked behind this old war bird on the ramp behind the IX center. The F4 might have been a flying brick but it looks good in the Vietnam era paint.
That & the Mig 21 was a great match up! I liked hearing the sequence if events when Cmdr Cunningham had either 3 or 4 Mig kills in one day. What a great pilot using a Awesome aircraft to his abilities. It also took alot of punishment to bring down.
When they decided to add the Vulcan gun underneath that was a great idea for air to air dogfights

That one with it's inverted gull wing and fixed undercarriage looked like a bird of prey with its talons extended and the looks alone put fear in the unfortunate ones who faced it.
The F4 to me has always looked like if it wanted to it could kick your ass. A true innovator in its day and still looks battle ready.
Not only did I have the honor to work on these for three years, I was lucky enough to get a back seat hop. Semper Fi.

I'd love to own an F-4. My absolute favorite fighter jet. When I was five I had planned to steal one from the flight line at Peterson AFB. My dad was an MP and had found my back pack with marbles, flashlight, string line and fighter jet book. Needless to say my plans were foiled. Oh the good ole days! 😂

The extended nose with the 20mm Gatling gun was the most fearsome edition of the F4. This is a very sexy plane.

I was in the military during the Vietnam war. The word was they could glide like a brick if power was lost. So if you lost power ...you were, well, lost!

Also given that the brick had the proper weight and balance, the correct control surfaces, wing load ratios and that the brick had aerodynamic profiles that would allow flight to be achieved, that the brick could flex properly without breaking, house avionics and fuel, house engines and control lines and an electrical and hydraulic systems, then yes, given all these parameters and more, the brick would fly.

My Uncle used to be ground crew for the F4 while serving the air force in the early 1970's. They were stationed out of Seoul.

In 1983 I was in basic training at Ft Dix, NJ, and the phantoms from McGuire AFB used to take off right over my barracks. Amazing to think I learned to sleep through that sound. What a glorious way to waste money!

As a 19 year-old in the summer of 1973 I was very lucky to get a summer job at the McDonnell Aircraft plant at the St Louis airport. Although my assignment was a clerical function with the first of the new F-15's, the plant was still producing the last of the new F-4 Phantoms for export. One of the plant's hangars housed the replica of the Spirit of St Louis used in the 1957 movie about Charles Lindbergh's famous flight. It was a fascinating summer job.
Thank you for the start up, I was asked about the Movie Topgun Maverick and the hose to start up the F14 and I tried to explain. YOUR VIDEO, was the perfect example. The F14, just like the F4, did not have an Auxilary Power Unit (APU) or at least when I was on board USS Constellation CV64 (77-81) with the F14A.

I was stationed at NAS Miramar in the late 70's when the US Navy was transitioning from the F-4 to the brand new F-14 Tomcat.
Same for me at NAS Oceana. First time I ever saw a Tomcat was looking out my back door that faced the base. I saw this straight-winged jet doing all kinds of aerial maneuvers. I thought, “WTF is that??!!”. It was a demonstration flight.
Can't believe they are both gone! The Tomcat still is a Legend along with the Phantom.
I feel there will never be anything that looks quite as striking as an F4E Phantom II going about its business.
Hey Grandpa Mike..I served on the USS Midway 1983-1986. Watched the last of the F4's flown off the deck. This has always been my favorite fighter aircraft. A rocket with wings I called them! Go Navy!
Was a Crew Chief on F-4G models the Wild Weasels and this looks like one with the ECM pod in the front where the 70mm cannon was!

I used to watch these out of Hickam back in the 80s when the Air Guard had them......what a blast watching them take off out of Honolulu reef runway friggin was awesome.

Lived near an airbase growing up and these would fly over dozens and dozens times a day. I would look up on awe every single time without fail. Gorgeous planes!!!!!!?!

1971-73 USS Kitty Hawk (CVA/CV-63) these air warriors brought a whole new meaning to ass kicking!! They were a flying tank with the same glide path of a stone. Popular thought was if you get enough horse power installed you can get a brick to fly. God speed to my shipmates that never returned to the deck.
My buddy was an Marine electronic tech back in the 70’s. He said they would come back from a mission with the paint blistered off the nose. Beast of the skies.

one of the best planes the US Military ever had. I used to watch those thing take off and land at NAS Dallas/Hensley Field back in the 80's when MAG 46 was stationed there. I built many a model of that Super Sexy plane when i was in high school. It will always remain my all time favorite aircraft.

Childhood memories of flights of F4Cs taking off and landing over our elementary school in the 60's. Our school was just off the end of the runway at Davis-Monthan AFB in Tucson. One great thing about living under the flight path is that our dogs were never afraid of thunder.

Every time I see and hear an F4 my heart races. What a beautiful aircraft. The closest I ever got to them was while aboard the USS Benner DD807, under the landing glide slope, while we were plane guard 1000 yards astern of the USS Ranger on Yankee Station during our WESTPAC of 69-70.
My Dad flew F4s in the late 60s and early 70s. Loved going to the flight line and watching him take off. So very cool.

My father got me a copy of Jane's Flight Academy when I was a kid hoping I'd become a pilot. Damn the Phantom was my absolute favourite aircraft!
I built one of these when I was 11 or 12 years old as a Revell 1/48th model kit with a navy grey color and a black nose cone. I loved the look of it and thought it looked 'cool'! A very distinctive aeroplane. This F4 along with a B29 were some of my favourite planes that I built.
Shaw AFB, 62nd TAC Recon Sqdn, 1972-1975. My work area was right next to hot refueling stand on the flightline. We had RF 4C recon birds, loved those planes. Amazed I still have good hearing, they sure were LOUD!. Night take offs with full AB were a sight to see.

As did I from June of 71 to April of 74. Worked right on the flight line and have a lot of unforgettable memories.

Theese aircraft served during the Vietnam war while I served in the USAF. I remember being a very proud member of our country's military . Very impressive aircraft.
