"I am not sure why people are always complaining about white with these things (ramp and card draw)" A few of the cards listed here were only recently printed, but a bigger point may be the price tag. The handful of "staples" listed here currently would cost me more than my entire non-budget Zaxara deck. This is not an option if I don't even know if I like to play whatever Boros deck I am making, much less if I want multiple Boros decks. The other side of the coin is that a lot of white ramp cards listed here cost 4 mana or more. In casual commander that probably won't be a big deal, but if every other colour starts ramping on turn 2-3 then you will always be a step behind. Which may not be the worst, since a player behind might not be the one the others focus on "eliminating". Red does have decent card draw outside the impulse exile draw though. It often comes with the caveat of discarding a card or two, but white, and of course black, both can make great use of graveyards, so this might be a better option than some of the white ramps shown here. Mayhaps a PSA is needed: I am not disagreeing with the fact that those cards can be considered staples. But not once did I hear a mention of how expensive they are while I hear a comment about a card saying "You can put it/them in any deck". Yes, you probably can, except when your 100 card deck is supposed to costs less than a single Dockside Extortionist. That was my only complaint, good video. There were a still few less pricey cards I may look into more for a future deck, thanks
I love bounce lands because they have so many cool interactions. You mentioned that they give you two land drops for one card, but they also put you back a land without putting you back mana, which is really important in conjunction with a lot of the white catchup ramp. In other colors, they're really great with untappers (blue/green), good turn two discard outlets for reanimator decks (black), actual ramp in Obeka (end the turn with the bounce trigger on the stack), good for picking up mdfc's. In short. I love them and will always try to find a reason to play them.
I fully agree, but I’m so high on bounce lands I don’t think you need any of those synergies. You take a tempo hit of the tap land to draw a land. Effectively a 1 mana draw 1. That’s great in my book, and only gets better with synergies.
I think the issue with card draw in White is that that the most powerful draw (e.g., Esper Sentinel) is based on your opponents doing things. There are only a few really good ways to draw cards that YOU control. *** The same is true for the vast majority of ramp in White.
I noticed that R&D kinda went the opposite way white used to do to balance the game: Instead of denying the ones ahead their resourses, you get more resourses if others are ahead. I kinda like it better. Everyone wants to do something.
I have an “Aurelia, The Warleader” Boros Equipment deck that absolutely nukes people. I load her up with a bunch of cheap equipments and Double Strike and she just goes to town. Puresteel Paladin for free equips, lots of “attach this” equipments, lots of cheap instants like Infuriate to buff Aurelia as soon as she comes out. Lots of cheap indestructible things like Adamant Will, Avecyns Memorial(not so cheap), Divine Smites, As well as things like Reconstruct History for grave a little grave recursion for up to 5 different cards. Its probably my most explosive deck, ive taken opponents out on turn 5 with good hands. I have Helm of the Host in the deck too because it can go infinite with Aurelia, and i just added some of the new Myriad cards in from BG to make it more pod oriented!
The issue with a lot of white card draw is that you have to wait. Some of the payoffs are amazing (like esper sentinel, or smugglers share) but you still have to wait. Red card draw, be it impulsive or looting/rummaging etc, gets you the new cards immediately, which can make the difference in some scenarios. It also fills up your grave which most decks should be making use of.
Boros is my favorite guild. I already have 10 out of 20/25of my decks. However I always try for each deck to be unique. And I don't auto include same cards in every single deck. But here are some of my favorite not mention in the video: Artifact: Sunforger, great card that might be great because of instant tutor options including settle the wreckage. Enchantment: Legion's Initiative ,anthem with save option. Land: Slayer's stronghold as usually Boros want's to hit hard and hit fast Creature: Lion Sash - equipment so many tutors and grave hate. Instant - Tibalt's trickery, because nobody expect counter spell from Boros.
Boros Fury-Shield is so fun. Whether you’re attacking in and they block with their best creature, or they’re attacking you with a suped up creature, it’s a great way to surprise throw some damage in the face.
I feel like Deflecting Palm is a massively underused card. Maybe my games tend towards bigger blowouts than others, but being able to redirect a huge hit once can really change the direction of an entire game. Just knowing you might have it terrifies players.
I came to love Deflecting Palm back when I still played Modern Boros Burn (back before Eldrazi Tron became a nuisance). The number of games that card changed in my favor or just ended the game immediately was insane. I ran them main board to the dismay of many of the local Modern players-since I wasn’t playing the Tier 1 competitive list so they didn’t expect it and would just get completely blindsided by it in game 1
@@neillaw mono red? sure. pair it with other colors and red brings a lot of good stuff. my marath would be a lot weaker without impact tremors, purphoros and mana echoes.
About the Mind's Eye though, I personally would not play it. Not even in an artifact focused deck. 5 mana to play it, 6 mana to have drawn 1 card. Even after an investment of 10 mana you only have drawn 5 cards. Which is a terrible rate in my book. Also it eats up the mana you might want to reserve for instants, later in the opponents turn. So, you get into situations where you need to choose: 'Do I draw now and risk not to be able to respond to a threat OR reserve your mana to deal with a potential threat.' In both scenarios you set yourself up for a potential feel bad situation. Then again that is just my opinion :D
I agree, I didn't even put it in my Traxos deck which sorely needs card draw. Paying 5 mana and to then hold up mana each turn just eats away at what you're able to do.
@@edhdeckbuilding I wouldn't say it's a bad card but I would say that it's inefficient and slow. Especially compared to Rhystic which is leagues better. I would say it's good to have if you don't have any interaction in hand, and have a stable board state where you can allow yourself to leave a little mana open to draw some cards. Or if you have a seedborn muse effort and a mana dork/rock type situation, then I would say it's actually better than Rhystic in that situation.
