Keep your expectations low and this is a sweet dessert whisky. I still enjoy it for what it is, a simple sweet whisky that I don't have to think too much about. Cheers Ash!
Yeah you’re right. My problem is my memory was telling me it’s incredible and it’s just not at that level. If you think a heavily sherried, easy going scotch then it’s still good but only when on offer for £35. I think 50-55 is a little too much, cheers Sertug!
I really like it. It is a nice "relaxing" whisky. It is not complex, but it is enjoyable. I use mine for having a dram while watching a movie or a game.
I do too, maybe I should have made that a bit clearer in the video but it wasn’t as good as my memory made it out to me if that makes sense. You’re spot on about it being a relaxing whisky. I can see that, I certainly wouldn’t drink it if I wanted to go searching for notes but instead drinking whilst doing something else like you say. Cheers!
Very interesting. I used to love this, years ago. Also, when I poured it in a flight, it almost always delighted. Yet many seem dissapointed now. It might be time to pour again!
Same here! But it just wasn’t quite as good as my memory had led me to believe unfortunately. I think changing my expectations to “this is a nice enjoyable fruity relaxed sipper” then I can begin to enjoy it a lot more and appreciate it for what it is but I’ve certainly had better the more whiskies that I try over the years. That’s the danger with rebuying whiskies I previously loved 😅
Funny I was just packing Auchentoshan Threewood to move it to the supply an hour ago, since I don't drink it, and here it is on a neck pour of yours. I remember enjoying some of the taste, but feeling it was really weak and uninteresting in the end. Might take a sip of it before doing so now that you had it. Tried the Ledaig Rioja and unfortunately it wasn't as good for me as I had hoped, after liking the 10 so much. I don't enjoy the sour, vinous notes. It is still good, and I hope it will settle into something I can enjoy more. Cheers
Haha funny how timing like that can align 😂 yeah it’s good as long as you frame it in the relaxed fruity sipper category whereas I think in my mind I had it lodged in there as this utterly incredible whisky and it’s just not that level unfortunately but it’s still decent, it’s not a bad whisky and I understand what you mean about the ledaig because I also prefer the 10 but I think for its value and if you can learn to appreciate (for me there’s an almost vegetal note in there with that sweetness) maybe that’s the sour part that you get then it’s still a really good whisky for the money! Definitely some funk with it and can take time to get used to it. cheers!
Thank you Ash. I love tuning in to your revews, even though my current situation. The only Auchentoshan Ive had is the Heartwood. An older expression, that was nice. It reminded me ALOT of Rum, but on the whisky side of it. I got almost a whole bottle of it from a friend who didn't like it. I enjoyed it. 😊
@@WhiskyWars Thank you! There will probably be some time before it settles down, but I'll tune in as often as I can 🥃 I rescently tried the budget Loch Lommond Peated Rioja Cask 40% ABV. To me, overall it is too alcohol driven even though some notes were pleasant. It drinks higher than a lot of 48-50% ABV. It reminded me of a fainter and weaker version of the standard peated one, but hotter with less of everything.
Absolutely no worries Hakan, you focus on you. Interesting, thanks for the heads up! I’ve yet to try a Loch Lomond 🥃 hotter and less of everything are words that everyone should listen to so I will!
Glendronach 12. I was excited to try a sherry bomb. My first pour was not enjoyable. But two days later it opened up and was everything I expected. So update us next week!
I don’t think I’ve ever tried any Auchentoshan whisky, not that I can recall anyway, not even in my early whisky days. I’ve been a little put off (now I understand a bit more about whisky), by the poor presentation (low ABV likely chill filtration and likely colour added). Your review has helped me a lot as I’m not likely to be seeking any out any time soon. Especially at RRP. Loads of integrity bottlings for £50 or less. I wouldn’t turn down a dram of course, I love trying all whisky, but unless it’s very heavily discounted, l probably won’t be picking one up.
I think your thinking is probably correct tbh. I think if you see it on offer for £35 and you would like a heavily sherried, easy going, not very complex scotch then I can actually recommend it but like you say, £50 and not craft, fairly low proof, no age statement and not complex then it’s much more of a tough sell although the taste is quite nice still but simple. Thanks Ian, I appreciate it! I’ve seen auchentoshan do a 3 50ml taster set of the American oak, 12 and 3Wood around £15. I could recommend just so that you gain the taste and the experience of auchentoshan. I do think the 3 wood is by far the best of the 3 though, the 12 is ok, the A oak is fairly uneventful, cheers!
@ Thanks Ash, I will keep an eye out for the taster pack and let you know what I make of them! Definitely a good way to go and I would like to tick another distiller off my list 😊.
I like to think that with something like that you can’t go too far wrong because even if you don’t rate it, you learn and expand your palette that little bit more. I wouldn’t pay over 15 for it but if you ever see it for 15 or less on sale then you can’t really go far wrong 👍
Had a bottle of this fairly early on in my whisky journey. I thought it was very average. It didn't stand out from anything else I'd had to that point. I think I paid around £50. I dont love heavily Sherried whisky anyway.
Yeah i agree. I think they charge too much for the RRP, I think if it’s available for £35 on offer then I can still recommend it to people as long as you think “relaxed, easy going not complex heavily sherried scotch” cheers!
