Thanks, Mike. These are great little switchers. I enjoy collecting these. I have all of the Marx models and most of the roads of the K-line models. Both manufacturers are nice running models. The Marx 1998 switcher just might be one of the best running designs Marx ever produced.
Great upload. I happened upon 4 of these K-line shells for sale on Ebay and got them cheap. I put the beautiful WP version on an old Marx switcher. I painted the trucks and handrails silver, and it looks great. You are correct about the poorly designed trucks on the K-line switchers.
i bought mine at a TCA show for $25. He wanted to sell it before he left. I also have the Western Pacific version. This was one of the few that came with a horn. Most of these did not. I love mine.
@@ToyTrainTipsAndTricks you may be right. I know they all didn't have them. I keep hoping someone would put out a collectors guide to K line as Greensberg's did for Lionel, American FLyer and Marx. Would be nice to know values and rarety.
Having done it, I can attest to the fact that it's a very good modification. You can wire-in a DPDT switch to allow for selecting between series or parallel wiring configurations, though I've never gone back to parallel mode.
Very nice. I like the S2 and S4, they were good runners. I like the picture of the S2 and S4 at Waterville on the TLE&W, home of the Bluebird Passenger Train, where I first started my railroad career. I cut my teeth on those engines, before I moved on to Conrail and ultimately, NS. Fun times, for sure. An excellent video, as always.
I only recently learned about the Marx editions with a 4-wheel motor and flexible trucks: ingenious! I have one new RMT version (Lackawanna), which is indeed an excellent runner.
Good show Mike! I'm not a big switcher fan but owning six RMT "Beep" diesels and being very impressed with them I was interested in getting one of their Alco "Bangs" in Jersey Central markings. However I put it off for too long and missed out. Oh well. Oh, and I'll add wiring the motors in series is a great way of "taming" Williams twin-motor diesels as well. Out of the box and unmodified they take off like rockets so your upcoming video on series wiring will be a real service to people. It's actually easy to do, folks don't need to be afraid of the process. I've done it to all of mine and with no problems.
I have 5 road names of the K-line Alco S-2 switcher: C.B.&Q.(my personal favorite) C.&N.W., Great Northern, B&O, and Illinois Central. If K-line would have made other road names that I liked I would have bought them too. These engines are nice little runners and they pull very well too. I miss K-line eletric trains, they never should have hired Bob Grubba from Lionel.
Ready Made Trains RMT., was going to come out with a green Southern S-4 diesel switcher a few years ago but they never put it into production if they did I would have gotten it. I have a bunch of Southern green diesels that Lionel made but what I do not have is a green Southern G.M. switcher or a green Alco S-2 or S-4 switcher. It would be nice to have one of those types in the green Southern paint scheme.
Huh, have a K-Line one in SP Black Widow, but it's an AC power version. Body swap, maybe? Whichever it might be, strong as an ox and goes like a terrier that sat on a wasp.
@@ToyTrainTipsAndTricks I've had electrical and or motor issues with them. I have a Mark's Santa Fe one with the Marx couplers it had a few pieces of rolling socks so I made a work train out of it. I learned the hard way you don't use full throttle of a lying out transformer on a Marx locomotive. I love the 6666 Columbia because it is scale size for a small locomotive it's wider than the Marchs Pacific locomotive. But like I said for the purchase price you can use them as scenery or make them into dummies.
You ain't wrong. I once had the k-line Chicago and Northwestern version. I swear it would pull stumps. Good little lococs.
Indeed!

I have one of the Marx Chassis, refitted with Lionel Knuckles, and with a K-Line Era Seaboard Shell on it. Thing is a phenomenal runner!
Sounds cool!

I believe the "K-Line By Lionel' versions are the only ones with horns.

I'm eager for the upcoming video about rewiring motors from parallel to series.

They made it thrice!
I've always wanted one of these.
I'd been shopping for quite a while.
@@ToyTrainTipsAndTricks I tend to see ones (primarily Marx) for probably $10 more than I want to pay and $∞ more than I have.

It is powerful AND fast.
:-)
Neat history Mike.
Thanks!
Cute little loco but I'm trying to stick with Lionel pieces. Another enjoyable vid Mike!
Thanks!
Great video. I have the Marx 1998.
Good choice!

Marx S 2 clever design, the K line model is dynamite, lots of power small package. I like to get a RMT .

Awesome Video🔥🔥🙏👍
Thank you very much!
Idea for a series build you’re own model train from spare parts
That would almost be the right size for my American Flyer Layout. I have an 027 loop set up to test 3 rail items or run prewar Flyer.
Yep. That would work!
I was thinking about getting a marx diesel locomotive To look better hauling freight cars than a Lionel bud car
Can you please do a video on the Illinois Central Freight set (engine 8669 ) set .
I mention it briefly here: th-cam.com/video/QzuFg2LCRzM/w-d-xo.html

If it says "San Francisco" it's a regular AC version. Otherwise, someone swapped shells
No mark, so a swap. Don't mind though, still a little workhorse and it looks good in SP paint.
I have had much difficulties with canine diesel locomotives. But for the price that they are they are good to make dummies out of or use the scenery
What kinds of trouble have you had??

@@frankmarkovcijr5459 Interesting. Maybe I'm just lucky but all of my K-Line locomotives have been solid runners.
