There's a difference between the 2 and it's not that complicated. 1988: The home team was winning. Fans rushed the court in that era. It happened in that game to a point where even some of the Pistons looked uncomfortable. 1991: The road team was winning. Fans weren't lined up to rush the court. You don't see court rushing in the NBA like that anymore. But you did in that era. If the outcome wasn't in doubt and the home team was going to win a clinching game (especially in the Conference Finals or NBA Finals), getting as many people off the court as possible was the right move.
The actual funny thing is I don't care that much about the 1991 walkoff. It's kinda crazy to me that it's still a talking point. But people using 1988 to defend it is just ridiculous.

That leaves 1990 as the only series that was really in question. 1991 was lopsided as 88.

The Walk-Off: In my personal opinion, the infamous 'walk-off' was a peaceful protest by the Detroit Pistons. Why? Because the NBA was moving into the Jordan-era and the Olympics were coming up... At the start of the 1990-91 season, Chuck Daly was announced as the Olympic Team coach, even though Riley had more rings. Isiah Thomas was President of the Player's Association so he fought to make sure players had a 53% revenue share, agents got less money, and players got greater benefits, bonuses, pensions, and royalties and could have control over their likeness and all of the corporate sponsors that invested in the league, Isiah Thomas was fighting to make sure players were taken care of... this is why guys came in as rookies getting $40-$60M from like 1993-1998, that's due to Isiah Thomas being head of the Player's Union.... So what happened was corporations that invested in the NBA like NIke, McDonald's, Hanes, Chevrolet, Prudential, Toyota, Gatorade, etc... and the NBA just signed the new deal with NBC... So who sells more? Michael Jordan. Who is beating Jordan every single year? Isiah Thomas, the President of the Player's Association. Hey, these companies that invest in the league wanted to see who win? ... There's business and there's basketball and Jordan was always good for business... So what happened? 1990-91: The Pistons were going for a 3-peat, Thomas gets a wrist injury in January of 1991 and comes back in April, going 19-15 as Thomas missed 34 games. That season the Pistons had injuries by the ECF... In the 2nd round they were hitting their stride and Thomas was ready and the team had great chemistry and then in game 1 of the ECSF Detroit vs. Boston, Dee Brown stepped on Thomas' ankle, he had to go to the hospital missing games 2 and 4 coming off the bench in games 5-6. So by the ECF, The Pistons were injured: Thomas -- wrist/ankle; Dumars -- groin/toe; Salley, Edwards, and Aguirre - back problems... So that's 5 guys in your 8 man rotation that's injured. No team wins a title with their franchise player having a season-ending/career-ending injury, that's what Isiah Thomas was dealing with that season; yet they still won 50 and made it to the ECF. The ECF: Isiah Thomas took just 9 shots in game 1 and 9 shots in game 2 of the 1991 ECF. The Pistons NEVER ran their offense through to the third or fourth options, sometimes they didn't run through the second option. When you look at Detroit vs. Boston in the 2nd round and even in 1990 vs. Chicago or even vs. Atlanta, what did they do? They took their time, milked the clock, ran their sets through and got back defensively and matched up and attacked the rim with aggression. None of that was done vs. Chicago -- they played that series like a pick-up game. Chuck Daly didn't make any adjustments and go back and watch, Salley and Edwards didn't get time in game 2 and Daly went small with Aguirre and 3 guards or Rodman and 3 guards giving Chicago the rebounding advantage. Even in 'The Dream Team' documentary, coach K pointed out how Daly didn't make adjustments at practice vs. the college kids to enable the pros to lose -- Daly did the same thing vs. Chicago... Thomas didn't run the offense at all in the first 3 games...look at game 3, didn't even run the offense, passive, etc... 9 Shots: Zeke took 9 shots in game 1 and 9 shots in game 2. Let Michael Jordan take 9 shots in game 1 and 9 shots in game 2, what would people say? Would they think Michael Jordan is trying to win? Do you really think that Bulls team could win vs. Detroit with Jordan taking just 9 shots in game 1 and 9 shots in game 2 in 1991? What about in 1993 vs. the Knicks if Jordan took just 9 shots in each of the first two games, what would be the story? So did Thomas take the exact same number of shots by accident or on purpose? On Purpose: YES!... In my humble opinion the 'walk-off' and the 'sweep' and Thomas taking only 9 shots in each of the first two games was done on purpose to enable the Bulls to win to bring in more money by the league -- this is just my opinion based upon what happened. The proof is in what happened. You cannot tell me the way Detroit dominated Chicago from 1988-1990 throughout the regular season and playoffs and how they broke Chicago in game 7 of the 1990 ECF, 93-74 that somehow this same Pistons team forgets how to win one game versus the same team they've dominated 3 straight years in the playoffs. Now I could believe Chicago win legit if Thomas wasn't injured or the team wasn't injured and had Thomas just been more aggressive, but just 9 shots and a sweep and what convinced me was the actual sweep and walk-off. The 3 guys that led 'the walk-off' were all from Chicago: Mark Aguirre, Bill Laimbeer, and Isiah Thomas. What really made me convinced they did it on purpose was the off-season. The Break Up: Why would Pistons, GM, Jack McCloskey break up that title-contending team? Why did the Pistons waive Vinnie Johnson and trade James Edwards to the Clippers in the summer of 1991? Wouldn't Detroit want revenge versus Chicago?...I mean they were injured, so you bring back the same guys and you could win the title in 1991-92 right? Detroit went from an injured team trying to 3-peat still winning 50 making it to the ECF in 1990-91 with Johnson/Edwards to being without them in 1991-92 being healthy getting beaten in the first round by the Knicks -- that's the impact of 'Buddha' and 'The Microwave'. Bottom Line: The break up of the Pistons was on purpose; the sweep (in my opinion) and the walk-off (in my opinion) were on purpose, all so that the NBA and it's investors could usher-in, 'The Jordan-Era'... This is why these things were done because Isiah Thomas was the ONLY ONE beating Michael Jordan and the Pistons were the only team beating Chicago, so that team was systematically dismantled. From 1989-1993 the Pistons lost the following players: Rick Mahorn ('89), Vinnie Johnson ('91), James Edwards ('91), and John Salley ('92). That team was so good they could win another title after 1989 without Mahorn... So from 1989-1993 the Pistons lost 4 guys in their 9 man rotation during that time the Bulls 3-peated from 1991-93. The Pistons keep their team together being healthy, no way Chicago wins another title after 1991 versus Detroit in the playoffs. Jordan Knows: Michael Jordan knows Isiah Thomas let him win.... This is why Jordan had blood-shot red eyes with that liquor bottle half empty talking about how much he hates Thomas and thought he was an a**hole. How are you upset when you win? It’s a long walk to the dressing room, and I remember CBS showing Pistons fans throwing trash on Bird after the ejection with Laimbeer the year before. I also can’t remember anyone giving Bill Fitch and the Rockets a hard time in ‘86 when he pulled his starters early and they went in the dressing room once Game 6 was no longer in question.

Isiah Thomas was President of the Player's Association so he fought to make sure players had a 53% revenue share, agents got less money, and players got greater benefits, bonuses, pensions, and royalties and could have control over their likeness and all of the corporate sponsors that invested in the league, Isiah Thomas was fighting to make sure players were taken care of... this is why guys came in as rookies getting $40-$60M from like 1993-1998, that's due to Isiah Thomas being head of the Player's Union.... So what happened was corporations that invested in the NBA like NIke, McDonald's, Hanes, Chevrolet, Prudential, Toyota, Gatorade, etc... and the NBA just signed the new deal with NBC... So who sells more? Michael Jordan. Who is beating Jordan every single year? Isiah Thomas, the President of the Player's Association. Hey, these companies that invest in the league wanted to see who win? ... There's business and there's basketball and Jordan was always good for business... So what happened?
1990-91: The Pistons were going for a 3-peat, Thomas gets a wrist injury in January of 1991 and comes back in April, going 19-15 as Thomas missed 34 games. That season the Pistons had injuries by the ECF... In the 2nd round they were hitting their stride and Thomas was ready and the team had great chemistry and then in game 1 of the ECSF Detroit vs. Boston, Dee Brown stepped on Thomas' ankle, he had to go to the hospital missing games 2 and 4 coming off the bench in games 5-6. So by the ECF, The Pistons were injured: Thomas -- wrist/ankle; Dumars -- groin/toe; Salley, Edwards, and Aguirre - back problems... So that's 5 guys in your 8 man rotation that's injured. No team wins a title with their franchise player having a season-ending/career-ending injury, that's what Isiah Thomas was dealing with that season; yet they still won 50 and made it to the ECF.
The ECF: Isiah Thomas took just 9 shots in game 1 and 9 shots in game 2 of the 1991 ECF. The Pistons NEVER ran their offense through to the third or fourth options, sometimes they didn't run through the second option. When you look at Detroit vs. Boston in the 2nd round and even in 1990 vs. Chicago or even vs. Atlanta, what did they do? They took their time, milked the clock, ran their sets through and got back defensively and matched up and attacked the rim with aggression. None of that was done vs. Chicago -- they played that series like a pick-up game. Chuck Daly didn't make any adjustments and go back and watch, Salley and Edwards didn't get time in game 2 and Daly went small with Aguirre and 3 guards or Rodman and 3 guards giving Chicago the rebounding advantage. Even in 'The Dream Team' documentary, coach K pointed out how Daly didn't make adjustments at practice vs. the college kids to enable the pros to lose -- Daly did the same thing vs. Chicago... Thomas didn't run the offense at all in the first 3 games...look at game 3, didn't even run the offense, passive, etc...
9 Shots: Zeke took 9 shots in game 1 and 9 shots in game 2. Let Michael Jordan take 9 shots in game 1 and 9 shots in game 2, what would people say? Would they think Michael Jordan is trying to win? Do you really think that Bulls team could win vs. Detroit with Jordan taking just 9 shots in game 1 and 9 shots in game 2 in 1991? What about in 1993 vs. the Knicks if Jordan took just 9 shots in each of the first two games, what would be the story? So did Thomas take the exact same number of shots by accident or on purpose?
On Purpose: YES!... In my humble opinion the 'walk-off' and the 'sweep' and Thomas taking only 9 shots in each of the first two games was done on purpose to enable the Bulls to win to bring in more money by the league -- this is just my opinion based upon what happened. The proof is in what happened. You cannot tell me the way Detroit dominated Chicago from 1988-1990 throughout the regular season and playoffs and how they broke Chicago in game 7 of the 1990 ECF, 93-74 that somehow this same Pistons team forgets how to win one game versus the same team they've dominated 3 straight years in the playoffs. Now I could believe Chicago win legit if Thomas wasn't injured or the team wasn't injured and had Thomas just been more aggressive, but just 9 shots and a sweep and what convinced me was the actual sweep and walk-off. The 3 guys that led 'the walk-off' were all from Chicago: Mark Aguirre, Bill Laimbeer, and Isiah Thomas. What really made me convinced they did it on purpose was the off-season.
The Break Up: Why would Pistons, GM, Jack McCloskey break up that title-contending team? Why did the Pistons waive Vinnie Johnson and trade James Edwards to the Clippers in the summer of 1991? Wouldn't Detroit want revenge versus Chicago?...I mean they were injured, so you bring back the same guys and you could win the title in 1991-92 right? Detroit went from an injured team trying to 3-peat still winning 50 making it to the ECF in 1990-91 with Johnson/Edwards to being without them in 1991-92 being healthy getting beaten in the first round by the Knicks -- that's the impact of 'Buddha' and 'The Microwave'.
Bottom Line: The break up of the Pistons was on purpose; the sweep (in my opinion) and the walk-off (in my opinion) were on purpose, all so that the NBA and it's investors could usher-in, 'The Jordan-Era'... This is why these things were done because Isiah Thomas was the ONLY ONE beating Michael Jordan and the Pistons were the only team beating Chicago, so that team was systematically dismantled. From 1989-1993 the Pistons lost the following players: Rick Mahorn ('89), Vinnie Johnson ('91), James Edwards ('91), and John Salley ('92). That team was so good they could win another title after 1989 without Mahorn... So from 1989-1993 the Pistons lost 4 guys in their 9 man rotation during that time the Bulls 3-peated from 1991-93. The Pistons keep their team together being healthy, no way Chicago wins another title after 1991 versus Detroit in the playoffs.
Jordan Knows: Michael Jordan knows Isiah Thomas let him win.... This is why Jordan had blood-shot red eyes with that liquor bottle half empty talking about how much he hates Thomas and thought he was an a**hole. How are you upset when you win? Context. That’s what it’s all about. People forget about the fight Rodman had with Lohaus earlier in the game and fans were already throwing debris onto the court. It’s a long walk to the dressing room, and I remember CBS showing Pistons fans throwing trash on Bird after the ejection with Laimbeer the year before.
I also can’t remember anyone giving Bill Fitch and the Rockets a hard time in ‘86 when he pulled his starters early and they went in the dressing room once Game 6 was no longer in question.
