- Not MAGIC at all, nope nope...
Remember when College Week looked strong, triples or above called on big money, barely a lost turn, and easy BRs crushed for an easy victory? Oh what a long time ago that was, yesterday is far behind and we can welcome back the lovely result that is known as the blown BR! ...
Anyways... this is just a double-layered fail. Zach also couldn't quite get the other half of the Kia despite quite a few spins around the area.
First of all, even given he gravitated towards the AND sound, he should have gotten off of that halfway through the letters being put up. It is very rare when all of CDMA make up pretty much the whole puzzle now. This is the best cookie you can possibly get, this was won easily for 100k on 3/23/09 (which I have a clip of as well - finally, BRs are getting repeated in the era I've covered). Just know the dang puzzle when you call the best letters you can.
But then... I understand the closing 10 seconds is even more pressure when Pat & a Portland audience is fully expecting the win, and some desperate used letter board scrounging occurred, this sound strategy was just not the way to go at all. He seriously did say WAND with "AND" at the end, that's how far he went in the wrong direction. Try to scan the used letter board for potential fits for _AND, don't rely on sounds. (BAND, HAND, LAND, SAND, WAND are the only four words I can get with this.) I do feel bad since sounding things out usually is the right way to go, but it really backfired tonight and I still think he overcommitted to focusing on the assumed sound.
One thing that has been pointed out in comments - Zach never re-established saying MAGIC again as time ran out. Even if he gets WAND in, the BR might have been called a loss, you need to say the whole thing together.

IIRC, the rule is that the solve must begin before the buzzer sounds, but can continue through the buzzer (as long as they don't stop). Had he said MAGIC right before the buzzer started, and continued though the buzzer with WAND (but the correct pronunciation), it would have counted. I believe you even have an example of this on your channel.
However, you are correct -- having NEVER reestablished the start of the solve, it would not have mattered anyway... This isn't Clock Game.
This failure was so epic that the UK Daily Mail mentioned it on their website (spelling Pat's surname Sajack but still.)

Best part is how Pat and the whole audience knew it. Just shows you how the pressure can get to you.
Only thing better then an epic fail is when it happends if front of friends and family.

I remember when MAGIC WAND won somebody $100,000, and I feared that the $100,000 was going to pop up once again.
He said both after the buzzer very easily from the viewers point of view but with adrenalin pumping on stage who could tell.
I was in the studio audience for this episode, and my dad and I were on the verge of internal explosion! XD
Imagine if he missed that puzzle and missed out on the $100,000.
I woulda jumped for joy when he said I wasn't getting a Prius!!!
wow i would never leave my home if they aired that.

I knew the answer was "magic wand". The word "wand" was the only one that made sense to me. Poor Zach can't seem to solve the puzzle right. It was such an easy puzzle.

A-ARD was not gotten as AWARD in 1994-95. Heck, there have been puzzles fully revealed that were missed on pronunciation.

I hope this contestant didn't even watch the episode with the same bonus round puzzle and a $100,000 win before appearing on wheel. All she had was "__GIC __ND". If he did see that bonus round, I can't possibly understand how he missed this.

In his defence, it is the only four letter word ending in -AND that is pronounced that way. All the others are pronounced..band...hand...land...sand..etc.
Even simple English can be quite deceiving.

It was a difficult puzzle. The word WAND has a strange spelling for its pronunciation and should be spelled with an O like pond and fond, words it rhymes with. Ii dare say, you give this puzzle to 10 friends who did not already see it and start counting ten seconds and 9 will get it wrong.
To bad, he looks like a guy who would drive a PRIUS!
