    I coached for Kelli in the 90’s for a few years and never saw anything that would rise to the level of abuse. I was brought in by my former coach, Blaine Jefferson, who I absolutely adored. So I am speaking from direct experience.

    I cannot thank you enough for doing these videos! I just don't know where to place Kelli Hill. She always seemed like a good coach.Then we heard her comments after the the ex doctor was charged and Dawes started speaking out! I would love to know the whole story between them but that's for Dom to tell when she''s ready....

      I am clueless as to what Kelli Hill said about Nassar. How and where can i find her comments about this please? I’m from Australia and I didn’t get to follow all the media about that case. I always thought she was a good coach who supported and loved her gymnasts but i am really keen on finding out about her comments which show she is not such a nice person.

    this olympic berth there were select athletes who crashed with injury...pay attention to the coaching they've had in the past or recent: Konnor McClain, Gabrielle Douglas, Trinity Thomas, Skye Blakely, Kayla DiCello,

    If you need more context to Dominique reassessing her upbringing by Kelli Hill, you need to watch the fluff piece on Dawes that was aired during the 1994 Mixed Pairs Competition…

    I loved hill back in the day when I was around her. But boy this is a tough one . I was a part of USAG for a very long time and I personally saw things that made my mouth drop in a few gym's 😢😢😢

    Hill was one of my idol’s growing up as I knew I wanted to be a coach since I was 9 yrs old. Let me just ask is there any elite coach who did it right?? Maybe elite gymnastics can’t exist? What can you be the best at in the world and not suffer or sacrifice to achieve that recognition?

      Idk it seems like hills and Dawes problems come from a place outside of gymnastics but we will never know unless Dawes just comes out and stops with the vague comments no other member of hill’s gymnastics seems to have an issue and many notable athletes still train there

    Have you guys not seen that local news story where the reporters went into the gym and Dominique Dawes was sobbing the entire interview while she was training, even tumbling? That was a HUGE red flag to me. Why wouldn't your coach and surrogate/foster mother stop you training and address the issue that was making Dawes cry uncontrollably? Especially with cameras in the gym, I was surprised that Kelly Hill was talking to the reports with smiles like nothing was wrong with Dominique.

  • @chocdave

    From what I know what made Dawes stop speaking with Hill was waits she felt Hill stayed silent about what she knew about Nassar and later Hill's so going to bat for USAG after all that came out and not so much her personal issues.

    I think that some of these coaches. The kelli hills and the Mary Lee Tracy's had to have picked up some less than desirable traits along the way. You have to imagine that they wanted the best for their athletes. And when you are put in the ring in the '90s with the Karolyis, Nunno, the Browns, and Parkettes... And your athlete is as good or better than them. You're going to have to put your boxing gloves on. Because they've already arrived at the meet ready to fight. They have been doing it for years. They knew how to play the game and the politics and everything else. So what does one do in that scenario?

  • @brianmccartney3262
    @brianmccartney3262 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think that it's important that we remember that these coaches are human and make mistakes and are inexperienced sometimes and in over their heads. Amongst other things. The other video with Kelly Hill talking about her own insecurities of coaching this athlete. That's really something to hear someone say. I mean there's a lot of pressure on these coaches as well. Especially during this era. Dominique was one of the best gymnasts in the world at one point in time. Arguably possibly the best. Leading the pack in the all-around in two world championships and an Olympic games only the falter before it was over with. Sweeping the event finals at Nationals on multiple occasions. Maybe a better coach would have ended in a different result. No one can say. But when you have two people that both have such high levels of anxiety about their performances. That usually doesn't go very well. At least karoli and Nunno had such strong senses of confidence, delusional or not, valid or not, who knows? But that can make a difference. That also could break an athlete. Their tactics were extremely harsh and debilitating for some and then motivating for others. Who knows. It's very interesting.

    I do remember in one interview Dominique commented saying that in one training sessions she was having an off day and Killi Kicked her out the gym and told her to go call her father to come and get her, mind you Dominique was living with hill at the time. She seemed so confused like why would I call my father to come and get me if I am living with you ? Meaning hill was ready to kicked out. I’m sure as she gotten older she now realizes that she was probably abused as well.
    Another interview Dominique spoke about how coaches sat on her legs for hours so that she can get the perfect splits. Like ouch

    I keep hearing these Dawes comments trickle out. It just seems like Dawes is upset with the sacrifices she had to make to be an elite gymnast not necessarily anything specific that Hill did. She would have faced those same sacrifices at any gym. She's been pretty vague, maybe at some point she will just put it out there.

    • @amakasan2083
      @amakasan2083 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Upset with the sacrifices? She's never made any such claims. She's competed in 3 Olympics. Lol the only US gymnast to do it and medal in All three. I don't think she's upset about "sacrificing". It was a conscious decision to return.. Especially for a third Olympics.

    Dawes not speaking to Hill I'm sure has nothing to do with gymnastics and everything to do with politics. 2 years ago there were a lot of social movements and political things going on, and people were often making comments publicly. For Dawes to absolutely cut all ties out of no where and refuse to have any contact with her after you live and trained with her means she's deeply hurt. I'm almost positive this is the reason why.

    She may have been a great coach but you can't tell me she didn't KNOW or SEE what was happening and if she REALLY was a good coach, she would have spoken up, done something. Go to the media, idk. My mother had this phrase "silence is the same as approval"

    • @94gymnast
      @94gymnast 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I obviously don't know Hill's knowledge in all of this, but I will say as a former gymnast and coach that it is usually not so black and white. I had my suspicions and heard rumours of certain coaches, but unfortunately child protective services ignores those situations. Pretty much unless you directly saw an incident occur they brush you off. (This is my experience hopefully it's different in other places). I once had a child report physical abuse to me (the abuser was a parent not a coach). I did my job and called it in and the person I spoke to in regards to the abuse was very dismissive and skeptical of the claim right off the bat. I don't know what happened in that situation. I myself was abused as a child although not by my coaches. I remember speaking with child protective services who did absolutely nothing to help me. So maybe Hill reported it or maybe she didn't. She may also have been unaware give these issues and how to handle them was less talked about at the time. Basically the whole of USAG failed these girls and I know from experience that Safe Sport is failing them now. It's so complex.

    dominique never misses an opportunity to sneak in a shameless plug these days, and now that she has this new gym and the whole nassar scandal came to light (which had nothing to do with her) her entire memory and narrative has magically changed all the sudden regarding her entire gymnastics career and everyone involved in it. you could see the transition begin in 2016 when she was still praising the sport, her coach, etc. in interviews but it wasn't fitting her new narrative and she started contradicting herself in the same interviews until she quickly just did a complete 180 out of nowhere..... she even flip flopped on her stance of putting her own kids in gymnastics........ sad to see this opportunistic side of her all the sudden.... she's making all these excuses now about her career when she was always judged very fairly relative to everyone else (i was there the whole time); it sounds like she's still really bitter from flopping so bad when she had the biggest chances at winning an aa int'l medal (93/94 worlds and 96 olympics)... get well soon dominique dawes!

      I disagree. Remember it takes courage to face your abusers also sometimes it takes YEARS if not DECADES to realize the ABUSE EVEN OCCURRED. I'm not taking sides for or against anyone however it's important to consider these facts before labeling someone opportunistic when you honestly don't know their story or what if anything they possibly endured.

      1000% in agreement. I coached for Kelli in the early 90’s while Dom was there. Not once did I ever see anything that would rise to the level of abuse. There is a psychological word for what we’re are now seeing from Dom, it’s transference. Perhaps it was triggered by the Nassar scandal, which didn’t directly affect her, and here husband after he told Dom “You know, your upbringing is abnormal, right?” Dom was training to be an Olympian, and just like in any other sport your world revolves around your training. Most Olympians have a very different childhoods than the average kid.
