There's a very fine line between harsh constructive criticism vs actually being abusive. With that being said, every gymnast has their own threshold on what they can or can't take. Steve could be someone who suited Shannon very well, whereas he may not be the right coach for another. When the stakes are so high in elite sport, it's inevitable to have to be harsh, as long as the coach doesn't shift to making personal attacks
I read Shannon Miller's book this summer. Shannon wrote that she and her coaches (Nunno, Peggy Liddick) were a great team together. Steve would sometimes yell at her or ask her to leave the gym if she wasn't practicing well, but she said didn't mind as long as it was about her gymnastics (and not personal). She wrote that she craved constructive criticism from her coaches. According to Shannon, Steve was a great motivator and she felt she could trust him, especially during the competitions. I think Shannon was determined to succeed and could take sometimes harsh critique if it benefited her gymnastics. Maybe Steve's style wasn't for everyone but I think he was right for Shannon.
Man getting kicked out of the gym or made to do conditioning for the remainder of a workout away from the other girls was such a common thing in the 90s…even in the lower levels.
Pretty hard to pin Miller’s skinny appearance on Nunno. Look at her now. Look at her before she did gymnastics, when she was a child. She has always been TINY. Her parents have always said that she never has had a big appetite.
This coach doesn't seem like one that is so harsh where he makes them train when they are injured or deprives them of food where they are abused physically and mentally. This Coach Nunno's style of coaching where he can be strict and nice at the same time and not be so hard like the Karoyis's is proof that you can still have a good gymnasts as he did with Shannon Miller.
Steve Discovered Shannon when she was 8 years old during a camp for an international Jr. meet in Russia either the Friendship cup or Chuchini cup something like that and was her coach from shortly after that to until she retired August 20th 2000 age 23 2 Olympic games 7 Olympic medals 2 Gold 2 Silver 3 Bronze Shannon's 5 medals at Barcelona were 4 bronze and a Silver Team All Around Bronze individual all around Silver beam Bronze Floor bronze in a tie with Tatiana Gutsu of united team and Cristina Bontas of Romania and bronze on Uneven Bars tied with Lavinia Milosovici of Romania on uneven bars and her two medals in Atlanta in 1996 were Team All Around Gold and Balance Beam Gold her winning score on beam was 9.862 and is in a 6 way tie for most medals at the Olympics with 7. 1992 was the US teams first all around win in more than 40 years since London in 1948 and they've won a medal in every Olympics since 3 Gold 2 Bronze 3 Silver correct the US team won Bronze in 1992 and 2000 Silver in 2004 2008 and 2020 and Gold in 1996 2012 and 2016 and the first American City to host an Olympics more than twice will be Los Angeles having its 3rd summer games in 2028. the oldest retired Olympic Gymnast still living are Agnes Keleti of Hungary 103 Larisa Latynina of Soviet Union age 89 turning 90 in Dec from a modern Olympics it would be Olga Korbut age 69. the oldest American Woman to Compete in an Olympics thus far is Simone Biles aged 24 at Tokyo 2021 age to compete in the Olympics used to be 14 in the year of the Olympics then it went to 15 and is now 16 in the Calendar year of the Olympics prior to team trials which are held in June of the Olympic year this year the trials are scheduled for June 27-30 so the cut off for eligibility is anybody born between January and June 13th 2008 is eligible for the trials
Yes there are abusive coaches, but the reality is coaches need to be strict at this level. It is what it is when you are an elite gymnast and want to win. There is a line between strict and abusive.
I actually know steve and Shannon's dad worked with best friends dad back then steve was tough but Shannon was tough and her parents would've flipped out on steve if he had starved her or made her starve. One thing I will say is coaches back then did get extremely tough on us about food and abusive I myself experienced crazy things while training back in those days. So much so I switched gyms almost is much as Kerri did back then. And dealing with racism from a few coaches it almost made me give up the sport completely
There hasn't been a single gymnast that has come out and called out Steven Nunno. Not a single gymnast. The closest was an off-the-cuff comment by Alicia Ingram saying, she had no issue training with Nunno but there might be someone else that feels differently. I doubt Nunno was perfect, he sounds like an ass in some of Shannon Miller's mother's book but back in the 90s if you weren't a small skinny gymnast, you didn't succeed. That was part of the sport. The interesting thing is to look at Shannon in 2024. She is as skinny as she was in 92. Her mother and sister are just as skinny. Coaches in 2024 will throw you put of practice if they think you aren't giving a complete effort. That isn't abuse. Nunno is loud and loves the attention but that is hardly a reason to label him abusive with ZERO proof.
I knew Steve as a fellow coach and as a parent of one of his gymnasts. I respect him then and now. I don’t believe that is is true. I saw hundreds of their workouts. I was there when Shannon first saw Nunno so I believe I am more qualified to address this than most.
He was really loyal with his students! He is a great coach, in what university he coaches?? How did he select his students? I never have punished my Spanish students when I tutored them. I didn't want any trouble with their parents. Coaches can't be super lenient always and others think they are cruel because they try to correct their students behaviors and mistakes. I had a student I tutored and I still talk to who today is 24 and I am super nice to him,I even said happy birthday to him on you tube and I always say nice things to him and didn't charge him 3 times. Sometimes students don't listen to teachers. I want to help my students with their Spanish homework and prepare them for tests, I don't know how to discipline them nor I want them to complain about me. I like Steve Nunno's coaching. I don't think he was tough when he told Shannon to run more to lose more weight after eating pizza🍕 and I think he lets them talk in workouts and after. He needs thin gymnasts. I have met 2 figure skating coaches who are russian and are way tougher than american coaches and their students stick to them like glue. They never talk during and after work outs. I am a good friend of a prolific figure skater and his life is tough with his coach around him and the boy doesn't switch coaches and jumps all the time in his 1.5 hr trainings per day. He can't even talk to anyone when his coach is around, sometimes for a few minutes. Russian coaches have horrible coaching methods. Did those gymnasts adapt to a life without gymnastics?
Gymnastics is a tough sport if your child is not physically capable of super hard work don't bring their wining asses into the gym and expect cartwheels will get you yo the olympics. Do you wanna coach to go super easy on your kid? The you coach them.
You should not make documentaries if you don’t have proof- where’s the proof of Nunno being this way?? Shannon would have said something a long time ago!!!
Just because he suited Shannon as a coach (and by all accounts, including her own, he did) doesn't mean that his coaching style wouldn't've crossed into abuse for a different gymnast.
@@simplystreeptacular And yet NOT A SINGLE ONE OF THEM HAS SPOKEN OUT AGAINST STEVE. Stop making up lies and speculating. Think about it, with all the talk the last few years why hasn't nUNNO'S NAME BEEN MENTIONED EVEN ONCE? I'll be waiting for a reply but you can't give one because no one has come out and said anything.
@@SabrinaVoineaSStolenMedal I never claimed that he has definitely done anything, and I definitely didn't "mak[e] up lies". I *said,* accurately, that a coaching style which works very well for one gymnast could still be abusive for another gymnast. You *really* need to calm down.
"Little Girls In Pretty Boxes" was "Lifetime Channel" release. . . . How about focusing for once on what the male gymnasts go through. I can guarantee it's harder.

Amen!

Her book was hardly a hard hitting honest account of anything
I don’t even remember Gaskins (sp?) I always wondered if Nunno had some issues in the past. He was very very vocal is what I remember vividly
Of course the coaches have to be tough! This is a tough sport to win world or Olympic metals.
Great coach!

I dont watch gymnastics anymore. I do watch documentaries about training and coaches who are not good. Exposé are what I find interesting.
Nunno doesn’t blink -

steve is fabulous!
He seemed to be a very smart coach for Shannon along with Peggy Liddick!

I‘m sure it’s also very hard, and I would also like to hear more about it. But I don’t care if it’s „harder“, this isn’t a competition
I've seen other remarks of yours. Perhaps some counseling is in order. You are clearly a misogynist and an ignorant one, at that.
Almost every prominent gymnastics coach in the USA should be banned!
BECAUSE YOU ARE AN EXPERT IN COACHING OF COURSE lmao
