  • No one believed it in 1993; it seemed like a complete impossibility in 1994. Nonetheless, the vault (the same vault) snatched the title away from Dominique Dawes and handed it to the ever-consistent Shannon Miller. Undoubtedly deserving, both athletes would later console one another at another major international all-around competition.

I still remember watching both of these competitions on tv as a young girl. I was Shannon Miller fan, and really wanted her to win in 1993 (after she won so many silver medals in Barcelona) but after her performance on beam I thought Dominique would become a world champion. Everything looked great for Dominique until that vault. And then 12 months later in april 1994 in Brisbane, the same thing happened again. I could not believe it!

She had the worst luck at some of these competitions she could have won. She was such a pioneer though. Dominique would have been such a high scorer in the new scoring system because she had a great line, well executed dance elements and higher difficulty than most.

Omg that vaulting horse was so scary back then for Yurchenkos. Thank God there weren't as many injuries to gymnasts as there could have been during training, much less competitions.

There was way more competitions in the 90s (Khorkina doesn't have 148 international medals for nothing)! But compulsories and the capped scoring system helped a lot with ensuring that gymnasts actually knew what they were doing as execution mattered more.

Kelli Hill wise, kind, such an example! Nowadays all the faves have vault in their first rotation, cannot imagine the all around being decided in that event at the moment 😅

Can you make a video about Komova losing the all around twice for a few tenths ? In my opinion she was robbed both times

She wasn't almost anything. She was only in a position because others made mistakes but everyone wants to erase her mistakes and forget that others had them too. If you fix her mistakes, everyones mistakes get fixed and she still doesn't win a AA medal. Sad facts

It’s just a fun what-if video purely for entertainment. That being said, in the previous CoP the highest vault score counted, and in later Codes the second vault attempt was dropped altogether, so the topic really isn’t exactly a huge stretch

@@worldartgym I wasn't picking on your video. Sorry, I didn't mean for you to think I have an issue with you. In General, I just get annoyed at people who say Dawes would have been two time, blah, blah, blah because her fans can be, shall we say, slow to the reality of things.

While, on the one hand, you are sort of right that there is no guarantee that she would have won a World AA title had she hit her vaults in 94, you are NOT right that she would not have won SOME sort of medal if she had hit them both years, regardless of what others did (including my favorite, Milosovici). The reality is that if ALL gymnasts had hit both in 93 and 94 pretty much to the best of their abilities, it would have been REALLY close among, primarily, Miller, Milosovici, Dawes, and perhaps a few others. I think those 3 were the best at the time, but by late 94, there were a number of others to contend with - Khorkina, Kochetkova, Podkopayeva, Amanar and Mo, foremost among them. Add in 96 as well, because had she hit her middle pass on FX in the Atlanta all-around, it would have been close, yet again. As it was, in the Atlanta Team Optionals, she was actually 2nd, which was an ENORMOUS deal! Personally, I think that if throughout the 93-96 quad, ALL of the top gymnasts had hit, you probably would have seen Dawes win AT LEAST 1 World or Olympic AA Title, and AT LEAST 1 or probably 2 other AA medals of SOME sort, provided she had also competed at the 95 Worlds.
