    Somebody give this guy the I'm the Man award. Instead of complaining about problems and tolerating them, he came up with a solution for those cheap and overpriced pool steps. His inspiration was the princesses he was helping out of the pool. Five videos on how to build pool steps! Brilliant!

    Great idea mate! I wouldn't have put the steps in the pool, it takes up too much room. I would have made a step ladder alongside the pool wall. Then maybe fill the pipes with sand to make it study

      When I built these in 2021 it was $600 for everything you see (Both Staircases, mats, hardware, etc). I couldn't tell you what the prices are today. All I know is we have used them for the past 3 years, hundreds of times and they are still going strong. To me they were worth every penny!

    Can you make step up higher does it need to be 3" coming off the base. Or do you only do 3" to make it more secure inside connectors?

    • @nickelanddimediy
      @nickelanddimediy  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      All the dimensions I used were done to mimic a traditional staircase as close as possible. When I built these my kids were little (2 & 7). I wanted it to be easy for them to climb up and down, which it is. With that being said if you are taller and have a bigger stride, than you probably could raise the height a bit. I did make a video where I added a 4th step to this. You can watch that here: th-cam.com/video/OrnOUEbcDb0/w-d-xo.html I would advise if you do go higher, you may want to consider making it wider for stability. 4 steps with this base is as high as I would personally go.

      They don't make steps for this pool. I bought 2 sets of pool steps for a bigger pool thinking I could fabricate it. What a waste of time & money that was. They took up more than half the pool and had huge gaps between them were extremely unsafe. I spent 2 months reselling them online and lost hundreds of dollars. That's why I designed and built these. Best decision I ever made, It's going on my 4th season with them and I have personally used them hundreds of times and they held up great.

      @@hanimegid993 If it is boxed in, it should be pretty strong. There are a lot of ways to add extra support if needed. I'm 175lbs and gone up and down probably a thousand times with no issue. Now as far as the height, Every step adds 8" in height, however if you were to raise the 4 small vertical posts under each step you could get extra height there. It's all of matter of what your tolerance is to height of the steps. I built these to mimic the height of a natural staircase. I'm in the process of making a video about adding the 4th step and I will show how you can add extra support if needed.

      The weakest link is the step plates. They are rated at 200lbs. I have been on them when I weighed 195lb and haven't had any problems since I added an extra support beam directly under the step plates. The structure itself is quite strong and could possibly hold more with some tweaking. But I can only speak from experience. I wouldn't push past 200lbs without making modifications.

      I can only speak from experience, I used them at 195lbs. The step plates (Dollys) are rated at 200lbs. I wouldn't push too far past that without modifying the step plates. The over all structure is a lot stronger than I thought it would be. However the step plates are the weakest link, that is why I added a middle cross bar under them.

I am close to 200lbs and I have gone up and down them hundreds of times for the past 3 seasons with no issues. The cage can probably handle more weight (it's pretty sturdy) It's the steps that are the weakest link.

      @@nickelanddimediy Your instructions are awesome!! ok, can you tell me how to figure the measurements and/or pieces to create the base & step top for adding an additional step?
      I'd like to add 1 more step which I understand will alter a few things. Our pool is 48" instead of the 12". We have a very tall family so adding a single step more should make it easier to climb up, over and into. I just need help with the pvc sizes. I think I can refigure the hand rail and connector piece, maybe... But any assistance would be appreciated. I'm going to try this on my own and surprise my family!!!

      That's funny you mention adding a step because I have been toying with the idea of
      getting a bigger pool next year (My kids are bigger now). I wanted to keep these stairs and add a step to it. Great minds think alike. It's going to involve some different connectors in the back. I need to look at my original plans and think this through a little bit.

    How much did it cost to make both?

    • @nickelanddimediy
      @nickelanddimediy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      To make both complete was about $600 in 2021. I'm not sure what it would be today due to inflation. I just know if you were to pay someone to build something like this, whatever the cost is, it would probably be triple the amount.

    • @davidbatten2424
      @davidbatten2424 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just priced it out with home Depot and just for the PVC pipe and fittings I was at $575. A brand new actual staircase built for a pool is $100 cheaper then building this and that seriously sucks because I really wanted to build a similar set only I want to turn the stairs that go into the water 90 degrees so they would take up less room.

    • @nickelanddimediy
      @nickelanddimediy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I paid about $600 in 2021. That was before we got hit with this crazy inflation. So it doesn't surprise me about that . Before I built this I purchased 2 sets of premade pool stairs. I spent over $500 on them. I thought I could "make" it work". It did NOT go as I hoped for. The stairs I bought were big and bulky and and took up a lot of space. I even thought I would just remove the top steps to lower it. There were huge gaps and it was quite unstable. Not to mention I spent a whole day "trying" to fill them with sand. I had to sell them on Offer Up to recoup some of money. That's why I built these. They are custom to this pool and work really well. It's unfortunate that the manufactures of these small pools don't offer better options. They could easily manufacture something and keep the cost down. If you find a better premade option please let us all know.

    How much weight can it hold?

    • @nickelanddimediy
      @nickelanddimediy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When I built these last year I weighed 195lbs. I had no problem going up and down them other than the middle of the step plates bowing. I wound up cracking one last year. This year I added the middle bar underneath the step plates and hadn't a problem so far. I have gone up and down them about 100 times since I made the revision. I have even stood on one of the steps with my oldest daughter who weighs 50lbs and felt confident with it. The actual structure is quite strong but I can only speak from my experience as far as weight tolerance.

    • @skybox-101
      @skybox-101 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, hum is there a way we can reinforce these for heavier people. It would work for my moms weight but then others would use it too, like my husband is 6'4" 230lbs...or do I need to limit to those 195 and below and have regular ladder?

    • @nickelanddimediy
      @nickelanddimediy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@skybox-101 Yes, the steps are pretty stable. They are a lot stronger than I thought they would be. However there are some things to consider and be aware of. First the handrails aren't meant to take your full body weight, so keep that in my mind. They only offer minimal support in that aspect. Second, the weakest part is the step plate. They are only rated at 200lb. I cracked one when I was 195lbs. That's why added the middle cross bar under each one and they feel a lot more stable. But I can only speak on my experience on the what weight these can handle. However, the beauty of the PVC pipe is there are many different things that can be easily done to reinforce and strengthen the structure. I will be posting a video in the next couple of days about adding a 4th step,( in this video I show some spots where you could add support to beef up the overall structure). So in summary, I would add supports to the overall structure, under the step plates and handrails. Thanks for watching!
