  • This video shows how to build steps using 2x4 lumber. Its a simple, easy DIY project. These steps will be used for a hot tub but the plan could easily be converted for a variety of uses depending on the size steps you need. I will take you throught the process of how to build these steps.

    This video was amazingly helpful to me. My first attempt at steps up to the trampoline fell totally apart after a couple rains. I think it was workmanship and the wrong wood. I'm going to try this with pressure treated wood and see how it works out this time. Thanks for the instruction.

    I am very happy to have found this video! I plan on building this for my Mama because she is having balance issues and doesn’t feel safe on her current spa steps. Any suggestions for the best way I can attach rails to the side for her, as well? I would very much appreciate any advice!

    • @Ray_Here
      @Ray_Here  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      A friend of mine wants to do the same thing for his mom. I think you could make a 2x4 on the bottom and top step shorter so they just come flush with the frame. That way you could attach an upright 2x4 for a banister. The banister would be attached to the frame. The top of the banister would be cut at an angle so the handrail would slope according to your need. Then you would screw the handrail on top. I’m just spitballing here, so make sure it’s sturdy enough. Good luck and let me know how it turns out.

    • @Ray_Here
      @Ray_Here  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I had to go back and watch the video as I produced it a few years ago. I think what you can do is take one of the 2x4” treads on the bottom and top stair and cut them length wise to be even with the frame. Then put your 2x4” uprights in those slots and screw them to the side of the top and bottom frames. Of course you will need to determine the height of uprights and cut an angle on top to accommodate the rail. I would just use another 2x4” board for the rail. Screw the and rail to the uprights and that should do it. I hope this makes sense to you and please share with us, if it works or you use a different method. Good Luck!

    Do you think this strategy is scalable? Could i make a third step that is very deep as a landing for my shed? Specifically, if the top step is 5’ deep should I add more supports?

    • @Ray_Here
      @Ray_Here  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Bruce. You can probably do that. You might want to move up to 2x6” for the supports. I don’t profess to be an engineer so I can’t say for sure. Good luck and let us know how it goes if you try it.

    What is the dimension of the top step box frame? I don’t see it in your dimensions? Maybe I missed it.?

    • @Ray_Here
      @Ray_Here  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Ethan. First of all I grew up in Boston so go Red Sox! Live in Illinois now.
      Sorry but I gave the steps away and don’t remember the exact dimensions. I suggest you decide how wide you want the stairs and cut the treads first. Lay them on the floor and determine the base dimensions from there. Allow for a 1/4” gap between the 2x4 treads. I think I made the bottom step 10” deep and the top 14”deep. Decide on the step height including the 2x4 tread and you can back into frame height. Step height should be 8-9” or so. I usually just draw it out roughly to get a sense of what I want. 2x4’s are pretty cheap so by an extra. I always do that. I usually don’t need it but sometimes I screw up or change my mind mid build. I hope this helps. Go for it!
