Container - Beating the Housing Crisis in London

  • The housing crisis is starting to reach a critical point in west London. Families on lower incomes struggle to afford the astronomical rents and people in traditionally well paid jobs cannot afford to buy.
In this video we visit QED Sustainable Urban Development and Ealing Council, who are working together to help people in need of emergency accommodation in the west London area. Making use of fallow land and brownfield sites, the project focuses on modifying stock piled shipping containers into modular homes that can be ported between temporarily available spaces.
We look at the tech behind the buildings and why up-cycling shipping containers appears to be the best solution to homing people quickly and cheaply. We also look into what the future may hold for modular housing and how you may soon be able to design and order your own.

The housing crisis in the UK has been maintained in order to keep property prices artificially high in order to keep the landowners, landlords in the lifestyle that they're used to. Empty houses not being rented out as people wait for the price to increase. When people think outside the box and come up with ideas like this, and tiny houses which is now increasing in popularity around the world but not in the UK, are met with rejection and Victorian property rules! I would love to live in one of these, if I didn't live in Cambridge!

They'd look much nicer if they were partially surfaced with a bamboo plank veneer.
The commentator at the 16:33 mark stated that container could be used to build prisons. If effort isn't taken to beautify these units to facilitate pride of residency/ownership with community space, they will quickly turn into prison units that you might find in any slum.

Ridiculously good inside. Brick cladding was good. Roof material looks noisy (hail) and ugly, a mock rooftop would really help.
The exteriors are generally stark, fake greenery and lighting, blackouts on the windows could make these immense spaces. Huge potential. Re-use was a massive gain.

Interesting to hear that these are intended as 'meanwhile sites' with a life of ten years. Just like the prefab houses were a short term measure after WW2 but were still occupied in the 1980's, over 40 years later. I think once in place these will be used for considerably longer than ten years.

Why no living rooms, storage space, wardrobes etc, these things are essential where people are dealing with additional issues and difficulties. You need to factor in some sort of respite space and consider the phycological impact. How long is temporary! How long does it take before living in these confined spaces starts to impact on mental health? What has been put in place to ensure it doesn't go over this period? What is the effect on children and families??? A very ill-thought out 'plan' when dealing with real human beings with real issues!

But what their not telling you these days is, I’ve looked at shipping containers, around the world, their are many great designs, but their just so expensive now. Your better of in the country, with a real house, that you can renovate yourself, over time.
But if you have time, to build with a shipping container, and you can do it yourself, then great, but the slab of concrete, that it goes on, and council approval, power and water, you are still looking at a lot of money.

Here’s an idea, let’s cram all the people in London into shipping crates and just stack them all up in piles, no not the well to do people, they will still live in their gardened estates, just the excess people the poor and working class the marginal and immigrant people. We have all these crates just laying around anyway, who needs windows and good air quality. Then the next thing we’ll do is see how many people we can cram into these crates if we stack them up on each other as well. When they die we just bury the whole container or run it through an incinerator and clean it back up for the next lot.

Stop making out tiny homes and container homes are an answer to housing crisis. People shouldn’t have to live in tiny spaces. Everyone should have access to a house. There are more then enough empty houses owned by the wealthy. They need to be filled with families and used. Shipping containers are tiny. Once you put in the stud walls and insulation and floors they are not wide enough or high enough. Plus if you start cutting the shells they lose all structural integrity and rigidity and weather proofing. And you need to brace and alter the frame. The UK is damp and wet and cold. No good for container houses. The government should make empty houses and factories, office blocks, warehouses available to people who truly cannot afford a house. Convert them into homes. Government should take all the empty shops from all the estate agents and use them for families. Not people who are wealthy and decide to downsize and live in a camper van or a tiny house cause it’s cool. You are not solving the problem with container housing. A temporary solution would be utilising empty land space and making more park homes. Static caravans and motor homes for people who cannot afford a house. Static caravans come fully furnished and are bigger than containers. It’s just frowned on by the general public as being common. Containers are old hat and not as good as modern 3D printed composite materials that are being used to build structures in disaster areas. If you fill the cities with metal boxes it will look awful in a few years. No matter how you tart them up.

Controlled immigration would have been sensible. Let's hope Brexit delivers on Immigration control. I can but dream.

Nobby Norberto you’re a bigot, narrow minded and short sited. We live on an island, therefore we need immigrants to come here and do jobs that natives don’t want to do. We need people contributing to the economy. Illegal immigration is a small part and the numbers are negligible in comparison to the numbers that work and contribute. Also, the majority of HNWI ar actually foreign nationals now living in the U.K. - NOT U.K. Nationals. Notice the £ has become weaker since Brexit forecast and the cost of many things such as groceries have risen. The people who will feel the impact of Brexit the most are the low income demographic.

Immigration from the European Union is good. High levels of education and a sense of cultural respect. Outside of the EU, not so much and that’s in general where the problem is. But the UK has always had 100% of control of immigration from outside the EU so brexit isn’t the solution for that really.

well here's an idea, stop inviting & accepting people coming to our country from every parts of the world who are hoping to get free pass and accomodation and start caring for our very own people who are struggling everyday in this country

stop having so many kids and there wouldn't be a crisis.

The crisis isn't to do with having kids. It's to do with the price of house being so expensive that its out of reach for 40% of the population.

@@4TheRecord crisis is generated to force the reducing of the global population. They want you to spend all your money, they want you to be poor. When you have no solution, you will have less kids. They want this for useless people who cannot generate proffit for the government. We need to have different people, with different expectations...to help the environment. Its no point to have many kids if you dont care about their future. You cannot offer them a good life for 6 kids...if you are a full time worker. You will end up in problems. And that's not maturity. That's why governments need to reduce the overpopulation. Its not helpfull for this planet and for the cost investiment.
