Way back in the 70's my Aunt had a hairdresser shop off of Forest Home Ave. I used to go with my Mom when she'd get her hair done, and I'd scamper off to a Baseball Card Shop across the road. I can't remember exactly what the name of the place was, but I remember the excitement of seeing all of those classic rookies and superstars like Carew, Yaztremski, Rose, Brett, and my favorite, Robin Yount, on display. Being 8-10 years old I couldn't afford anything major, it was always fun to look and buy a few packs of Topps. That was just one memory, one of thousands of amazing memories that I had growing up in Milwaukee. Later there was the Root River Parkway cruises, Highway 🛣 100 cruising, the 41-Twin Drive-in, the 24-Outdoor Drive-in, and so many more. It was a special place.

I went to Pulaski High from 1958 - 1961. Used to go to movies at the Modjeska and the Granada, which was more or less across Mitchell from the Modjeska (It's a parking lot now). Back then when you walked down Mitchell Street, the busias in their babushkas and stockings rolled down to their knees, would be waiting for the bus, chattering away to each other in Polish. My folks rented a side by side duplex on S. 35th, between Dakota and Montana for 57 and 58, then built a house way out on S. 31st and W. Green St. It was all open fields then.'
My wife's dad grew up on S. 15th, between the river and Cleveland Ave. Imagine his surprise when my wife and I bought a house near S. 14th and W. Arthur in 1981. We finally sold out in 2014. The whole south side changed drastically over those 33 years.

Straight up Mitchell to Forest Home. I lived on 15th place between the 2 and my kids went to school there. I see the old "A" bar is now a store. Right past Forest Home cemetery where I used to work. 15th place and Lincoln used to be Jeps 2 tavern, had GREAT Bloody Marys on Sunday mornings. 16th street to Windlake, you're out of the hood now.

The south side of Milwaukee has changed over the years. The loss of good jobs on the side of town has effected the overall quality of life. Some of the south side now suffers from the lack of good employment. So many companys are gone.

I haven't been back in a very long time. It would be great if you would say on screen or even locally, what street you're on and when you're crossing those major intersections, what you're crossing. Even still I enjoyed the ride. Thanks for posting.

He started on Mitchell going west, turned onto S 14th and then onto W. Forest Home. Took Forest Home to Lincoln, then east on LIncoln to S. 16th. South on 16th to W. Windlake, took Windlake west to S. 20th just north of Cleveland. That is where it stopped.

I miss Milwaukee and especially the South Side. I live out west now and despise it. I need to get back to the Cream City.

North side north west side North Shore south shore, western suburbs Brady Street I can go on and on. Milwaukee is the most diverse city left in America. It’s filled with truly neighborhoods that have their own culture. Because it’s politically incorrect to have cultural and ethnic identities anymore, except for a couple, it’s deemed terrible city but it is just the opposite. It’s one of the last truly great cities left in America where you can find clearly great neighborhoods. Keep it up Milwaukee you’re a one-of-a-kind and you are a survivor.
