In this July 2024 conversation with Zighen Aym, a North African, Algerian-American writer, photographer and engineer, he discusses his experiences with ethnic profiling in the aftermath of 9/11, as described in his first book ‘Still Moments: A Story about Faded Dreams and Forbidden Pictures’.
'Still Moments' explores the events following his stopping along Route 66 in October 2002 to photograph some railroad tracks, when an Illinois State Police officer stopped and questioned him, which led to an FBI interrogation several months later. He further reflects on his photography, his life in Algeria, his reaction to being ethnically profiled and suspected of terrorist activities and the trauma of this experience.
