- Donald F. Glut has been active in both the entertainment and publishing industries since 1966. Don has had a long and varied career. He has been a professional musician, actor, film director, executive producer, photographer, magazine editor, proofreader and (very briefly, for an advertising agency) copywriter, but is mostly known for his long career as a freelance writer. He has written and directed feature-length motion pictures, documentaries and music videos, authored approximately 80 fiction and non-fiction published books, myriad TV scripts (live action and animation shows, network and syndicated), comic-book scripts, short stories, magazine articles, even music and theatre. He has been involved with numerous popular franchises such as Star Wars, The Monkees, Tarzan, Spider-Man, Transformers, G.I. Joe, Vampirella, Masters of the Universe, The Flintstones, Jonny Quest and many others, and created original comic-book characters for Gold Key, Marvel and DC. Arguably Don is best known for his novelization of the second "Star Wars" movie The Empire Strikes Back (#1 Best Seller). Don currently executive-produces, writes and directs "traditional-style" horror for his company Pecosborn Productions, and writes scripts for The Creeps horror comics magazine. Also, he is a Southern California representative of Las Vegas Talent Agency. Note: Any motion picture titles that may be listed prior to Dinosaur Valley Girls (1997) are of amateur movies, the first of 41 of which Don Glut made when he was nine years old.

Stuff we use:
LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - amzn.to/2tbtmOq
AUDIO
Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post amzn.to/425k5rG
Audio Recorder - If we had to do it all over again, this is probably the first item we would have bought - amzn.to/3WEuz0k
LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times - amzn.to/2u5UnHv

Very inspiring! Ive heard a few times I was trying to do too much at the same time. Artist, Music production, filmmaking, etc and this gentlemen has done even more. This is the confirmation I needed 👏🏼 thank you for sharing this interview.
Donald doesn't stop creating! Our best to you and your work!
I remember those fanzines! I published some of them myself -- mimeographing them in high school, then mailing them out to 30-40 people. That was a fun time. That is how I got into writing, too. As he said, I looked around and thought to myself, "Well, I can do something as good as that," and off I went. There was something kind of pure about it. I was doing it entirely for the fun of it, for the joy of writing and putting it together. No concern for "success" or acclaim. Just the intrinsic satisfaction of creativity.
This man always drops incredible tips, no bs just gold advice.
I first read Glut in the 1970s, about the history of comic books. He's an outstanding writer, you should check out his work. I trust his advice, considering his incredible range of experience.
Sorry, but what was the answer to the titular question? ...some of these other comments seem like bots because they're saying it was a great answer, but like... he didn't answer, he just told the story of how he, personally started writing, and it didn't exactly sound like it was fraught with challenges he couldn't handle.
Wait you mean they got bots even on TH-cam ??
@@jeremietommie6228ofc they do
watch the video again, he explains at the start like how taking small jobs or none paying jobs like in his high school papper were steppings stones in his career.
I can relate to the ideas presented here by Donald. Music is everything to me. ❤ Thank you so much for this interview.
Glad you enjoyed it Ewa!
This was definitely a Glut of information about writing.
I'll show myself out.
That dinosaur skull looks awesome!
Rawr!
I wonder if that TREX skull is just in his living room
To be genuinely happy. that’s a rare thing with me! 😂😂😂
Vinyl records are coming back 😮
This is my man
Cool dinosaur skull.

Personal Rejection vs Professional Rejection
Who is this guy, and who is his band?
Donald F. Glut and Penny Arkade
That's Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin.
Donald Glut, he wrote plenty of Marvel Comics, movies and tv shows screenplays. I actually have no idea of his band's name.
I must be loyle to my capo.
‘
This was no help whatsoever. Just some old retired man BSing on past about "zines.' Really helpful!
Yeah he's likely not that popular in your trailer park's home skool
I suppose being told "do the work" and "connect with people" isn't what you were looking for? Probably also want to get paid before you've done anything that actually matters. And I suppose "Famous Monsters of Filmland" isn't quite famous enough for you too either. Geez.
@@tts626 It does not matter how "famous" someone is. If the title is very misleading, it deserves to be criticized.
@@geargeekpdx3566 What would you know about trailer parks, home schooling or writing? You're just a YT troll.
@@tts626 Yes, you're absolutely right. It wasn't what I was looking for. The subject is writing. I was seeking advice as a writer about writing. Everybody already knows you need to "do the work" and "connect with people" to get a job or get hired. It doesn't even require a professional to give you that advice.
What a waste of time! This interview is nothing about "How to start writing"!!
It gave me an idea to write an opening scene where a man attends a long lecture that turns out to be devoid of relevant information, and he struggles to find a way to leave as quickly as possible.
Hey, look. You don't know how many of us need a jump start...many creatives struggle with impostor syndrome before they get started. They get analysis paralysis. Or, they're so doubtful they never write their future Academy Award-winning screenplay.
@@5Gburn I can recommend a video with the title "How to believe in yourself before you start anything". Even after five awards I still find it useful.
@@Tommy_007Will you post the link to that video? Please and thank you.
@@kristincox0212 Hi Kristin. Unfortunately, that particular comment was just a joke 🙂But my own view on this is the following: Focus on the things that you FEEL are within reach of your potential; give it a serious try, and accept that it could fail. Or try again in a slightly new way. You learn a lot by each serious attempt.
Success also depends on other people's taste. Listen to their feedback - and know that they could be wrong. Remember that J.K. Rowling initially got rejected by many people with really bad taste.
