Christianity was outlawed in Japan in 1614 on pain of death, and foreigners were banned outright from stepping foot in the country as well, except for the Dutch in the island of Dejima. The few surviving Japanese christians were driven deep underground, and while its not impossible that Kenshin's family was one of them they definitely would not have used crosses on their graves. Japan would not reopen itself to foreign contact until 1854 when the second Perry Expedition arrived, and even then only in a few designated ports. The event in this video clip supposedly happened in 1857-58, by which point westerners had only started coming to Japan again.
