    Even though this isn't canon, the OVAs were always so beautifully done. As a teen they were kind of bittersweet, seeing as they were more rooted in drama rather than shounen action and humor. As an adult, they're more sweet rather than being bitter because you can appreciate the depth they gave the characters through the dialog and writing. I also appreciate that they used Hiko as a sort of "meta" narrator for the series because he very much sits beside us and describes it as we see it.

      Two years later, how do you feel? I just made a comment about how I've seen Trust and Betrayal countless times and this only once. But this clip makes me want to watch it again. The words ring truer, and the meanings seem to make more sense to me now than 10 years ago.

    Great! But please, don´t forget that Myōjin Yahiko is strong thanks to Himura Kenshin (following the manga, you will find that is true). For Myōjin, Himura was/is/will be his physical and spiritual Master forever (and a true friend, too). That´s the reason (in this OVA universe) that `this´ Yahiko can show to `this´ Kenji that he is following a wrong way of life. Thank you Alex B for sharing!

      +solo-bayonetas yahiko also has to thank miss karou and the kamiya kasshin style

    • @solo-bayonetas
      @solo-bayonetas 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      +razkable You´re right! I forgot that detail. Master Kaoru is one of the important links in Yahiko´s life (filling several times the empty space left by the absence of a mother/old sister for him). But remember that at first of the story Yahiko wanted to be strong and learn the Hiten Mitsurugi secrets. If Kenshin would been a bad-selfish-macho guy, Yahiko would left the dojo Kamiya, only to learn sword fencing with him or with other master. And again, thanks to Kenshin, Yahiko became into a strong and honest warrior (representing the "sword that protects life" Kamiya Kasshin motto) and above all, a great friend for Kenshin.

    • @gosukiwi
      @gosukiwi 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I watched RK back when I was a kid, around the age of Yahiko, and have rewatched it several times. At the time, a Kenshin who doesn't kill was boring, and I felt bad for Yahiko for not beeing able to learn a "real" style, he was stuck with Kamiya Kassin instead. As I grew up I understood Kenshin, and why he stopped killing. What Seijuro Hiko said at the end makes sense, he doesn't want to transmit Hitten Mitsurugi Ryu, neither does Kenshin. I guess he makes an exception for Kenji, but he will not teach him all of it, as he said.
      In Kenji's position, I would have done the same, so I understand his reasons. The fact that Yahiko beats him (he used Kenshin's favorite attack against the juppongatana in his first fight, so its not 100% Kamiya Kassin Ryu but has some changes he made) is quite lame but I get it's so he changes his mind, and adapts to a modern era, where killing is no longer necessary, neither is the ultimate power of Hitten Mitsurugy Ryu.
      Truly a serie for adults, as when you are a child, you hate those kind of reserved, passive and overall "pussy" decisions. As you grow up, it makes a bit more sense. Still not my style, but at least I understand his POV.
      Personally, I'm with Saito and his philosophy all the way ;)

    • @kyoskei
      @kyoskei 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Priscila Navarro as for that, its written by the anime's author to be the cannon ending of the tv version of the anime. However the original writer of the Manga said that he was not satisfied with the ending as Kenshin went through allot and deserved a better ending than that though he did not write the end of Kenshin's life into the manga and regrets that its impractical to do so now.

    Heiko changed Shinta into Kenshin.... then through the battles of Kenshin Yahiko learned how to become stronger within himself I think. which is why Kenji could not beat Yahiko. though Kenji had the moves of his father Yahiko knew them better and knew to anticipate them and how to counter them. which makes Yahiko the better swordsmen in this fight.

  • @seedevil

    kenshin's sword was actually not that powerful. it was the most powerful reverse-blade sword, but that doesn't mean it could defeat a regular sword on its own. the reason kenshin did so well with it was because his strikes were faster than his opponents' strikes. it's the same for Yahiko.

    Maybe he'll transform like Yahiko did for me. I didn't like Yahiko when he first appeared, mostly because I saw him as a brat much like Kaoru did, However, now... he's an amazing (very good looking xD) disciple and swordsman as shown here when he fought Kenji.

    Just a thought. What if with his near superhuman natural genius, speed, agility, and strength, Kenshin mastered the Kamiya Kasshin-ryu Style instead of Hitten Mitsurugi-ryu? Then paired it his philosophical rejection of taking lives, and equipped the reversed edged katana. Would've been the ultimate pacifist swordsman.
    We might see that what if with Kenji though xD.

  • @Vaan362

    You know, Kenshin's story is really cool. Because he alone has ACTUALLY changed the art of swordsmanship (which is methods to kill). Thats a pretty big commitment and intense ass character to be the one who uses martial arts without ever wanting or needing to kill. This can definitely reflect on how we can live our lives in real life. I wonder, is it applicable now?

    The sad death of Kenshin in this OVA is not part of Nobuhiro Watsuki's(rurouni kenshin author) original story, someone just made this up with consent to Nobuhiro. In the manga, Kenshin just decided to stay with Kaoru and Kenji and decided to pass the sakabatou to Yahiko. Just read the original rurouni kenshin manga and you will feel better, it has a better happy ending!

    2:33 Now that I think about it performing that block with the Sakabatou would be a very bad idea, with a normal sword there would be no problem but since the edge is on the back of this sword if you try to hold it with your hand like that you risk slicing your own hand off
    Another reason it was the perfect sword for Kenshin, who worried about the life of everyone (including his enemies) while completely disregarding his own

    • @chakinabox
      @chakinabox ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed. That is if he was blocking using the back end. Watching it again, it seems he blocked the attack with the side face of the sword; you can see how he holds the handle with the forward end facing upwards. Even still, it is a risky move if an attack coming downwards could also risk the palm getting cut by the reverse bladed edge. Indeed though, the ideal of such a sword speaks volumes, not wanting to hurt others at the risk of harming yourself instead.

    • @jassom1270
      @jassom1270 ปีที่แล้ว

      There’s techniques in sword fighting that actually require you grab the blade. In HEMA there’s a technique that calls for you the bond the award by the blade and attack with the handle/pommel, effectively using your sword like a mace when fighting against armor. If you punch down on the sides of the bald beard enough you don’t need to worry about it cutting your hands. Even if it did cut your hands, it’s better to have a slice hand and block the attack than it is to not block the attack at all
