I wonder if the kind of anime we see in this clip is dead and buried. No nonsense fanservice, no harems, no joke repeats, no paint-by-numbers isekai ... just flawless storytelling accentuated by an outstanding score and character depth. There must be a market for this standard of quality, but where has it been?
It's been years.. but I can't help but feel extremely sad at the ending. Hiko, too, is filled with regret. He wished that what he said to Kenshin was not the truth, but it turned out that he was right all the time. He wished Kenshin not to carry such a tremendous burden, but it happened. In fact, he tried to prevent, but Kenshin was too näive and he has to live with the decision he made when he parted ways with him.
15+ years later and this is still my top film. What a masterpiece of a film, everything from the cinematography to the music was done masterfully and with great taste. If it couldn't hit top rank in mainstream film business like those Akira Kurosawa period pieces, it should at least have made top ranking in the anime industry. This will probably be my top film of all time.
Absolutely love this. Not just because kenshin is an awesome character but because it shows what war can do to someone. I love his emotionless expressions. You can tell he gets no enjoyment or pleasure from it. He’s just acting out of duty and belief. At the end when they raise the flag you get the hint that he realizes the cost of that flag . The lives he’s taken you can sense that it weighs on him . Love this montage !
Remember that's where the people who treated Kenshin like "family" protecting him are buried. Hiko comes across it and sees there's a new grave, with a woman's scarf on it. From its place, Hiko understands this must be a woman of great importance to Kenshin, and that everything he warned Kenshin of when he tried talking him out of leaving has come to pass. It's quite beautiful really, because Hiko is always demeaning in his talk, but he shows sadness in knowing his pupil is going through that.
What i love on this OVA is that Death is portrayed as something Sad instead Glorified. Man Slayer isn't a title to be proud of, instead Kenshin carry this weight.

Saitou's entry at 1:57 has to be one of the most badass antagonist/anti-hero appearances in anime of all time. Whenever I watch him tell Okita to retreat, it sends a chill down my spine...
For those that didn't figure out the significance of the graves and Hiko's surprise and then saddened expression: The graves were made by Kenshin for the three women he couldn't protect from the bandits when he was a child. Hiko remarks that those 3 lives who Kenshin couldn't protect would weight upon him. Tomoe's scarf added on top of those graves marked that Kenshin failed yet to protect another woman important to him, one more burden on his soul. Hiko is the only one who understood the significance of that scarf on those 3 specific graves; that's why he had a saddened expression at the very end.
No, that's not exactly correct. Yeah the three graves were made by Kenshin as he was a child, and it's true Hiko remarks their Weight upon him, but that's all in the past and old 'news'. What really saddens Hiko, is the 4th Grave, and that once again there is one woman Kenshin couldn't protect, which will only add to the Burden.
@@Gokkeli the scarf is also proof that he returned, that after all these years, Kenshin still carries that weight. That was my read, not that there was a new death. How is hiko supposed to know that?
The last scene is the one thats most heart breaking. People that havent immerse themselves in the ovas will never understand how,how much or why.. A truly cathartic experience, makes you want to live every moment to the fullest. Good or bad, nothing last for long.
Rough translation: "In Bakumatsu, there was a patriot in Kyoto called Battousai the manslayer. He who slew people like Asura and curved out new era, Meiji, with his bloody sword disappeared in the end of war."
4:04 ... I love this addition the the original ending. Notice how when he enters the building, about 15-20 guys charge him, but then, once they see what's happening, they start trying to flee. They simply didn't realize that they had lost the moment he decided to attack them.
Trilha sonora pungente.
One thing that really annoyed me about the official English version is that they had Okita refer to Saitou as "master", probably assuming that the kid was his pupil and giving a completely false impression. Not only was Okita a fellow captain, but he was said to be Saitou's superior as a swordsman and was the one who was a sword instructor.
After seeing trailer Kenshin The Beginning Live action and back to see this video. Can't wait to see how good live action can made at best when compare with this classic OVA.
This scene represent what only few people experience in their life. Moment where they receive a true or see through an illusion they have been on for a long time . At this moment they experience a mix felling of joy due to the freedom received , humility caused by the past mistake realization , excitement by the moment revelation. This song "kotowari" is the perfect catalyst for that representation
La serie en general el anime las ovas las películas nada está fuera de lugar es la franquicia perfecta i para sumar tiene un remake que solo mejora la obra yo no sé qué opinaras tu pero a mi modo de ver así están las cosas
"Ruroni Kenshin: Memories" is frankly a better "anti war film" than "Saving Private Ryan"; whereas "Ryan" only pornographically showcases the gratuity of the violence, "Memories" shows the harm that War inflicts on the soul of the warrior.
The graves held no significance to anyone other than Kenshin, so when Hiko saw the scarf on the grave, he knew two things: 1) Kenshin had visited the grave. 2) The scarf was a woman's, and represented someone he lost that was important to him.

@Beinggreatfull Imho... It means that after all those years after meeting, training with and leaving Hiko, Kenshin was not still able of forgetting his initial cause: protecting the weak... Hiko assumes that his pupil will live a life of misery just as he told him when he saw Kenshin for the last time...
