    Top 5 mistakes:
    1. Not clarifying (You can get build up so have to clarify every 3 weeks with SLS)
    2. Co-washing (You will get build up if you co wash every time. Use this schedule: co wash, co wash, lo poo etc. As I am coconut co wash is advised)
    3. Deep conditioning (Use it! Time and quality product! At least 30 minutes. Add oil or honey to make a conditioner a deep conditioner. Use shower cap and hot hat.)
    4. Raking in products (denman brush does not work for waves. Use super soaker method and smoothing and scrunching)
    5. Skipping gel. (Expecting hold from wrong products. Use gel in your wet hair! Key to happiness!)

      I agree, I thought the hair had more bounce to it. It looked lovely! When I was testing out stylers, I always liked creams over gels because they didn’t restrict my hair’s movement. Anything that made my hair crunch made me cringe lol. The only downside to creams is in my case, they’re way heavier. My hair looks fantastic on day one, and then incredibly greasy on day two. Sometimes with certain products, you just feel them on your hair. Bleh.

    I am having BY FAR the best hair day I have literally ever had in my life. I almost want to cry. I actually feel like my hair looks beautifully natural. Finally! I've been natural, following CGM for over a year. The only things I changed for wash day yesterday was stuff I picked up from this video & two others of yours (the only videos of yours I've watched, so far!). I'm so thankful you're here doing this. You kept getting suggested in one of my curly fb groups. When I first saw you, I thought we had similar hair, but mine isn't quite that curly and big and nice... I was wrong. My hair looks great today. Thank you so much! ♡

      I think she means instead of shampooing EVERYDAY (because while clarifying is important, shampoo every single day isnt healthy) and to just do the cowashing sometimes when you are showering, but your hair doesnt need to be washed. Im sure this doesn't work for well for absolutely everybody, unless you find ingredients that help control sebem, other specific issues. There is a company that is all healthy with no additives and you pick all the ingredients and choose everything from the base being made for oily/dry/normal/combination to the soecific ingredients. Tana M. just did a video on them.. Worth a shot! They also do cleanser, lotion, and shampoo. Worth a shot! They arw called mixems or mix ins.. Mix something lol sorry I forget!

Mine is JUST the hair at the nape though, so basically it's like 88% of my hair is highlighted, broken, flaccid and fried (very little wave unless it's humid), and then I have the remaining 12% at my neck that's just these dark ringlets in comparably pristine condition! I have so much trouble finding products that don't weigh my hair type down but still combat the frizz. Thank you!! Today read just a few articles so far and a couple videos (some of which were by you) on Curly Girl Method, especially for wavies (found out today I'm 2A fine), started experimenting a bit, and already learning so much and seeing changes and getting idea what to buy. I always feel much more myself when the wave of my hair comes out so I wanna encourage it plus finally take the time to improve some issues it's had a long time with static and dry breakage. Have used no products or dye on it over 6 years and months at a time with no shampoo or conditioner. That was a cool sorta "cleanse" and natural, minimalist, money-saving, time-saving, true, but there are benefits of good products so I'm open and drawn to try some new things as part of a fun makeover, such as making flaxseed gel and looking into low-toxic hair salon. Mind-blowing how much valuable information on practically any topic is available online these days! I super appreciate people taking time to educate on their passions and helps inspire me to start an educational TH-cam channel (on holistic wellness and trauma recovery), hopefully this summer! Related to that is this topic of having fun accentuating our authentic beauty such as hair type!

    My mistakes:
    4. Raking in gel: I literally just bought an Denman brush after it was recommended (by a curly girl). I figured out by myself the last two wash days that THAT is not what I want.
    Problems:
    My long hair tangles A. LOT. I have to find a way to detangle it without having to wet or condition it every day. I tried not brushing it for 3 days and I almost spent thirty minutes with conditioner SOAKED hair to detangle it. :(

    Two of my biggest mistakes when I first started:
    1) Deep conditioning with cheap, silicone-containing products.
    2) Over-manipulating my hair to make a style with little product, rather than strategically applying leave-ins.

    This is a great video! Over the last month or so, I've slowly come to realize that what I thought was oily dandruff was build up (thanks to a friend who pointed that out), six months into CG. I was loosing SO MUCH hair. So glad I now know I need to be cleansing more often 😁 this information isn't really available in most CG video so I'm grateful you put it out there!

    I recently have been directed to the CG method. My hair looks a bit likes yours! And I'm so so so glad I found your videos. On my initial research on CG, it always talked about really curly hair, or thick and curly hair. My hair is thin and more wavy with some curl than actually curly. Looking forward to more of your videos as I start my journey!

    Okay, so you popped up on my yt dash last night and I figured hey, I should probably make sure I know not to make these mistakes. Well holy hell. I was making almost all. Because of you, i'm having one of the BEST wash days iver ever had. My hair full, its clumping nicely, low frizz, and softer than it's been in a long time. I'm in absolute awe. I'm still new to this whole curlygirl journey, only been doing it about 3 months but your tips have saved me from falling off the wagon and using heat/bad products. I felt like nothing was going to help my hair actually get back to my natural curls. Basically... i'm just so glad I happened to watch your video last night. ❤❤❤

    The curly hair journey really is unique to each person. Couple things I've learned along the way (with your help and trial and error!!) it takes time. I have been at it for just under a year but boy the changes. For those starting out, hang in there - you will learn what your hair likes/dislikes. I remember when I started I thought I'd never get it! I'm on the same 2 wash cowash, 3rd wash lo-poo and it works for me. Don't be surprised (but don't be disappointed if not) if your curl pattern changes. I started as a wavy 2a-2b and I am now a 2c-3a botticelli curly. Go figure. One more thing I learned about my curls is if I use a leave in before my gel, I don't get nearly the definition as when I skip it. And yes, a Denman would WRECK me. Ha.

    • @deborahomalley5480
      @deborahomalley5480 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So do you just use the gel alone? Have you found a gel that also has the benefits of a leave-in?

    • @lisagalvin9987
      @lisagalvin9987 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      On wash day I cowash or shampoo, then condition while I'm washing/shaving/etc, squish/rinse conditioner out. Apply curl creme (I like Kevin Murphy Motion Lotion), squeeze out water with a tshirt and apply a curl enhancer (top two favs Mop Top Curl Custard or Dippiry Doo Girls w/Curls Curl Mousse and then top off with Biosilk Rock Hard Gelee. It leaves the hardest cast I have found and keeps my curls happy for second and sometimes 3rd day hair. Hope that helps!

    • @deborahomalley5480
      @deborahomalley5480 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It does help! Thank you! I know this is a silly question, but what exactly does a curl cream do that the curl enhancer and gel don't do? I'm new to this, so I'm still trying to figure out what each thing does. I understand the importance of gel and curl enhancer, just not the cream.

    • @alysonlupo
      @alysonlupo  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Cream tends to help further define my waves and prevent frizz. I really only use it in summer when it’s scorching outside.

    I'm more of a 3A type curls but I have very fine hair. Your every-3rd-day-low-poo helped me a lot in dealing with lifeless curls. I used to just co-wash for about a week then low-poo. I ended up with stringy, lifeless and horrible waves. And yeah, I never thought that using gel would help me achieve better shaped curls too. Now I can't do without it. THANK YOU!

    I've got waves/curls ranging from 2c-3b on my head, but mostly 3a. What you said in this video is spot on. I struggled for over 2 years to make co-washing work for me, but I constantly felt gunky and gross. And my very fragile curls would hang limp and lifeless. Finally, I decided to go back to shampoo (coincidentally, I also use the Suave Daily Clarifying) and I'm much happier. I got so wrapped up in the pursuit of 'flawless curls' that I wasn't listening to my hair. For me, protein is key, and less moisture is more. I haven't used a leave-in conditioner in ages.

      I'm modified CG. My hair is just too fine and too healthy to constantly slather on loads of conditioner. So now I shampoo my scalp once a week, the length of my hair as needed, every few weeks or so. I only condition the ends of my hair. Then I use just a pea sized amount of AG Recoil on soaking wet hair, followed by a bit of Ultra Defining gel. Plop for 10 minutes and diffuse. Works great for me. Good luck on your journey!

      Update: I got the As I Am Cowash and it's a game changer!!! Best hair day I've ever had. The DevaCurl Volumizing Foam is not doing it for me at all though... it feels drying and it disrupts my natural wave pattern when I scrunch - just gives me a fake scrunched curl look. Looking for a new volumizing foam, considering the Fekkai Full Blown Volume Styling Whip - have you tried that?

    • @alysonlupo
      @alysonlupo  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm willing to bet it's full of silicones since it's Fekkai, so no, I haven't tried it. Maybe the As I Am curling jelly would be a good one for you? Deva Wavemaker maybe. Or if foams are your thing, Innersense and Zerran both make great ones! Oh, and Jessicurl Spiralicious is just a fantastic all-in-one product - cream, enhancer, gel. A few suggestions for ya!

    I have been straighting my hair for so long now and I'm trying to actually take care of my hair. I'm so confused with my hair right now because on some parts my hair is curly and on other parts it's just wavy. 😥

    • @alysonlupo
      @alysonlupo  6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yan Sfor That’s so so so so normal, especially in the beginning. As a wavy, you’re going to have different curl patterns to work with, but coming from a lot of damage, it’s going to be a little more challenging. You need this, your hair needs this. It will get better, and things like the smasters method and getting a Deva type cut will help (I have videos on both). Best of luck to you!!!

    • @alysonlupo
      @alysonlupo  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @meganandrews4472
      @meganandrews4472 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      once you figure out your "normal" curl patterns, it'll all work out! I've always had a mixed bag of curls. The top half of my hair is 3a, and the bottom half is 2c. The top/back gets the frizziest, and the bottom waves tend to straighten out the longer my hair is. It makes getting my hair cut very interesting, since I definitely need layers!

    Your comment about the denman brush really struck a chord with me, I have seen a few wavy girl videos talking about it but it has disasterous effects for my waves it just brushes them out and makes them stringly! Scrunching works so much better!

    I don't think raking, or using Denman brush works for wavy hair. I have the CurlKeeper Flexy brush though, seems like a good investment for detangling hair. I learnt two new things here - DC for 15 minutes with the heat cap and use shampoo with SLS. I hope this helps my stringy mess. Thanks Alyson, you are so much fun. Good vibes+++.

    I'm so glad I found you, at last a wavy lady that talks sense for us wavys ( we don't need to apologise for that you curly girls) I absolutely agree about clarifying, for years I kept using 'mousturising' products but they just weighed it down. I was also sceptical about gel ( any lady of a certain age will have bad 80s memories of this 😂 crunchy unmoving hair yuk!) I had to make myself try these new gels but they are great and leave it soft and light I particularly like the wella one and the curlsmith flexijelly & soufflé. Please do more videos - great tips from one that understands wavy tribulations.

    I totally skipped the deep conditioning the last two times I used the clarifying shampoo and I do have mad hair. I am probably (no, definitely) going to fix that mistake right now. So glad you made this video! My hair keeps going flat once it's dried--super curly when wet, and then once I am dry, everything just falls out. I have tried both the L.A. Sport Gel (I actually got the Spike Gel, which is a 12) and the Ecoco Gel with olive oil, but either way, my hair looks dry and poofy once it's dry, not glossy like yours.

    I have color-treated hair and I used Apple Cider vinegar last night. It worked as a clarifier. I love the As I Am too cowash but haven’t used it in a while.

      real life+curly girl Well, I used it again this morning and it made my hair frizzier than normal. I bought the Mystic Black deep conditioner you talked about and I should have it tomorrow.

      The apple cider vinegar doesn't damage the color???It's the only thing that takes care of my itchy scalp, but since I colored it...I'm afraid to use it again.

    The As I Am coconut co-wash has seriously changed my liiiiiiife! I never would have tried it if I didn't hear you raving about it. Thanks so much for sharing all you know :)

    Fine haired dry wavy here. I've been circling around the curly girl method for awhile but was terrified to start it. Heavy product weighs my hair down so much. You are pushing me closer to the end.

    I need to wash my hair everyday. I tried going nopoo once, but my hair never adapted to it.

    I found myself nodding and saying yes out loud while watching your video. Lots of good info! Clarifying is what I have been missing!

    I was wondering why my curls were going more stringy! I've been raking in product lately. I gave up partway though diffusing this morning because it was so bad and just ponytailed it. I'll have to start trying praying hands.

    I have mostly 3a hair, but I experienced all the issues you talk about! My routine is really similar to yours and it took me some times to figure out what was better for my hair despite the curly girl method, but now I'm happy with my hair for the most part of the time. Thank you for your tips, they are precious!

    My hair is at its best when it's ready for shampooing, then I hang in there for a few days 🙌

    Thank you for this video! For so long I followed curlies who got awesome results with denman brushes and I always thought I was doing something wrong. Hurray, for us wavies!
