    1. wet hair thoroughly
    2. 1:15 shampoo: scrub the scalp and make sure there's consistently enough water
    3. 2:10 apple cider vinegar rinse: scrub the scalp and don't detangle, then rinse
    4. 3:20 hair mask! detangle with it, scrunch to apply. squish to condish. make suuuuure to have a lot of water in your hair.
    5. let it sit for 30 minutes
    6. 5:22 leave in time: now we're starting to style the hair; creating clumps.
    7. 6:22 curling custard: Squish and pulse with lots of water
    8. 7:33 jelly time! roping to distribute, squish and pulse to form clumps.
    9. 9:04 plop for 30 minutes
    10. 12:23 diffuse until 90% dry and let it air dry to 100%
    11. 13:58 scrunch out the crunch with oil!

Pretty good tips in this video. thank you.

      Me too. In the morning, I just litely finger comb my hair and then wet it and apply a leave in conditioner or oil and let it dry naturally. Or in the summer, I might sleep with wet hair so it re-curls/clusters & there’s less to do in the morning.

    I’m about two years into letting my curls be free, but only got my first dry curly cut in September. My previous stylist had been doing my hair for over 20 years and we watched it go from coarse and wavy to smooth and “holy cow, what happened?!”. We actually watched as the transformation moved up from the nape of my neck where she pointed out to a colleague that “it looked like I used the pink rods on her” (those are the smallest ones, I guess) to finally fully encompassing my whole head in about 4 1/2 years.
    What I didn’t know was the biggest mistake she was making as she was trying to control the frizz was using the thinning shears on my very thick hair. When I decided to try getting a dry cut, the stylist was sure to remind me that one cut wasn’t going to magically make the frizz go away because of the layerings M had done. I, in turn, pointed out that this first cut was like the first day of puppy obedience training. Some work was done, I was given “homework” to do as I navigate taking care of my curls, and the next cut will be lesson two of curl obedience training. Lesson 2 is in about 3 weeks, having given the remaining thinning layers a good three to grow out further. Wish me luck! My curls are 2C/3A with a few 3Bs.

    I have low density hair, and I really appreciated that you mentioned in your IG post that the goal may not be 4 huge clumps. If I have larger clumps, I have less volume. I have had to learn to accept that my hair has to be broken up a bit more to look the best it can.

    Such good tips and I'll definitely try this. I feel like its hard when you have wavy/curly hair because its so easy to break the curls/waves apart and just obliterate them. I just feel like its so time consuming and with my dyson, i can have my rib length hair blow dried straight in 15 minute, lol.

    I'm so happy I found this video! First time trying your method, and I am LOVING my curls! I did a few things differently: I washed my hair and vinegar rinsed it the night before, wet and used Mixed Chicks leave in conditioner the next morning, then used home-made flax gel afterwards, all on wet, wet hair! I didn't use the "praying hands" method like I usually do, but the scrunch method; I think this made a big difference too, as I now know (through you) that the praying hands method loosened my clumps rather than setting them. I plopped for about 20 minutes, then left it alone for about a half hour. I then blow dried in sections, leaving the dryer on each section at least a minute. When about 90% dry, I stopped. After it was dry (using your finger testing method) I used Icon India Oil to scrunch out the crunch. OMG. My curls look wonderful! Thanks for the tips!! Your hair is great, by the way! :)

    i have been upside down styling FOREVER and i've never seen anyone else do it the way I do it! i see that some people think they can't do the whole routine upside down, but you don't have to! wash/cleanse rightside up, condition, detangle, use a comb to part your hair (if you do), then flip to rinse and apply product. at this point i do some finger coiling to the back of my hair where i don't have as great of a curl pattern. then i scrunch scrunch scrunch and wet plot in an old cotton T. leave it for 10 minutes, then out, scrunch, position curls, and air dry. my curly specialist stylist had never heard of upside down, but it works!!!

    My hair would be so heavy and stiff if I used all that product. I'm actually jealous your hair can handle all of that. I'm low porosity high frizz and I am still trying to find my perfect balance.

      Hey! Just thought I'd mention that Shea moisture has a sulfate silicone and paraben free line specifically for low porosity hair, including shampoo, conditioner, and leave in conditioner. I'm not sure if it includes stylers, but I'd check it out if I were you!

    • @kristykeller7603
      @kristykeller7603 5 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      it seems like a lot...but that is the purpose. you should just give it a try once. After its dry and casted, you scrunch out the crunch. Frizzless and beautiful! I use this method on my curly clients all the time. they are always shocked at how much product the hair actually needs.

    • @cat47997

    • @saraha5522

      Low porosity hair just can't take a lot of products. I have low porosity hair. It's not very common and it's not like other hair (ie the hair of the majority of people) I think. I can only put on one product. If I put on more my hair gets very heavy and weighed down and feels and looks greasy and sticky, it doesn't matter which products I use. Low porosity hair just won't open up no matter what you do to it, so there's no way it's ever gonna suck up any product and the products just sit on top of the hair shaft and weigh it down.

    Thanks for all the techniques and tips, you have helped me along. 3 months in and I no longer am panicky every morning wondering if I will be able to have good enough hair to go to work. (I always did) This is a journey of acceptance as well, but I love rocking cherub curls and waves after years of blow drying. And a little frizz is NOT the end of the world, I've said I'm having a bad hair day and she's said no, I can't even see what you're talking about. Always seems like I get complements right when I need them. So thank you!

    God bless you, Courtney, for putting out videos on how to care for 2 type, barely wavy hair. You are a Godsend. I was getting so frustrated with my hair and was about to get it cut shorter (my is is almost shoulder length, so I was just about to get it cut even shorter), when I saw your videos and few months ago and started the curly girl journey. I can tell that it is getting better with every wash day. I don't have a brush like what you use, but I do have and use a Denman type brush to distribute the conditioners throughly and to brush the front of my hair, to get it to clump and get my hair to part and off my face.

  • @ambersmith1697
    @ambersmith1697 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    This video has been a game changer for me! Thank you SO much for putting the time and effort into making it and going into such detail about your routine. It was exactly what I needed.
    I stumbled across the video while searching for tips on getting and keeping curl clumps. With my high porosity, med density, fine 2b waves, I can get my hair to clump beautifully, but it's keeping the clumps intact while I flip my head right side up (I also wash my hair bending over the bathtub, rather than in the shower. Maybe that's why I found your video so helpful!) that I really struggle with. If i do manage to save a few of those precious clumps, they start falling apart as my hair dries. It always ends up looking stringy with small ramen noodle- looking Curls. That's the way it used to go.
    Now, however, I follow your video step- by- step, with a few tweaks to make it better suited to my hair, and I am blown away by the results!! My big, beautiful, fat clumps are still intact, and my hair appears very uniformal....uniformed..??. The Curls and waves are basically all the same shape and size. That's huge for me because my hair usually looks like it belongs to 6 different people. There is little to no Frizz! My curls are well defined, there's some volume at the root (but there can always be more volume, amirite?🙂), and maybe it's just me, but i think my hair is even a bit shinier than before!!
    Someone in the comments below said she had been focusing on buying and trying different products, hoping one would be The One, and hadn't been giving as much attention to application technique. That's EXACTLY what I've been doing! I've been spending crazy amounts of money on hair products and then rushing through my wash day. I was using the techniques that I had read about without understanding why they worked. I also haven't been paying attention to my hair...I wasn't listening to what it was telling me. But once I slowed down my routine some, took my time, and really took notice of how my hair reacts to different products/ techniques, it has made all the difference in my hair... and in my attitude about it. (I've been following the CGM for about 3.5 months, and have been on the verge of throwing in the towel for, at least, the last month). Seeing the results of following your routine has given me enough hope and encouragement to keep at it... at least a while longer. So thank you again! Keep doing what you're doing!

    Just finding your videos after a lifetime of straight hair which has now become about a 2b wave. My hair has completely surprised me and I’m trying to figure this wavy thing out! Thanks for the upside down tips-totally works and I’ve been looking for a good leave-in, so I’m going to try your rec, too. Turns out I’ve been both dry ‘plopping’ and pixie diffusing as it seemed intuitive. Gonna say that after a lifetime of straight that got weird and yucky with just about any product, I’m slowly integrating just a leave-in and an oil. Going to continue with the rest of your curl tutorials! ❤️

    You showed lifting the hair away from the back of your head in another video, too. Until I saw that it was something I never really considered important for my shoulder length hair, but it was a total game changer for me. It really helped the clumps form and stay together. Funny how a seemingly minor detail can be so critical to good results! Thanks xo

      I thought I had straight hair. Then I had been keeping it in braid out waves. After about 3 months of doing it on repeat, I have random bits of hair forming ringlets and most of it being wavy even after being washed. It’s kinda wild.

    I'm a 2C/3A girl. I just started this in order to fix my color damaged/flatiron dry, dull hair and to bring out the natural waves/curls that I've been trying to straighten for twenty years. I solved my prob in one day which shocked me. I used Marc Anthony Hydrating Curl Creme on wet hair and it shines now, is soft and curly to where I'm 3A everywhere almost now. Even after six days I still had some ringlets which shocked me and very little frizz even six days later. I highly recommend it if anyone hasn't tried it.

I will admit, I never even knew I HAD waves until 6 months ago, when I really looked at my wet hair right before I blew it straight. But anyways, I have studied your videos, and I watched your curl clumps 2.0 several times - and I got it! It wasn't so much needing to change the products I had been using, but changing my technique! This seems to be a big problem for a lot of people but I have the opposite. My curls clump no matter what I do (as long as they're wet). If I'd let them my hair would be in 3 or 4 massive clumps. It means I struggle to distribute styling product on them so everything gets super frizzy when dry.

    I feel like my hair is falling flat and getting really frizzy (which is frustrating), but your curl pattern looks so much like mine on one of my rare good hair days I’m definitely going to try this out! I’ve seen SO many videos where people are oohing and aahing over the Denman brush or finger coiling and I don’t get it. I have tried both of those so many times and the results have been sad. I’ve also had some bad results washing my hair upside down, but the way you lift your hair off the back of the scalp might work for me.

    Thanks for sharing these techniques! The last few months I've really been trying to get my curls back and getting clumped curls has been a huge challenge for me. I'm so jealous of my son's 3C curls that automatically ringlet at the slightest hint of moisture.

Based on your descriptions of how your hair behaves, what it looks like visually, and the types of styling products you use, I get the impression that our hair texture and skin oiliness is the same. So yes I used to get a "funky" area in the back of my head as well. The thing that really really helps was to rake the hair off the back of my head and add a touch of water to the back of my head, and really really turn my head from side to side as I add products. And not being afraid to really gently shake the hair off of the back of my head either. Really reach around in the back and scrunch! Haha, what do you think?

    I'm still in transition and one thing that still confuses me I guess is gel. I know a lot of people new to CGM are scared of hard, crunchy gel. The last time I tried using gel and mousse in my hair again I felt like it made my hair really dry and feel unhealthy. My usual wash day is devacurl or a clarifying shampoo and conditioner, the blueberry bliss leave-in and Kiehl's Creme with Silk Groom (which I highly recommend, protein cream with lighter oils) and that gives me some softer waves and good hydration. I'd like to get more hold out of my waves but I don't want to dry out my hair. On a related note, could you do an updated product favorites with your more moisturizing or balanced products you've been liking since your last video?

    • @errrkt
      @errrkt 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd recommend trying devacurl's B′LEAVE-IN, it's a good one and done styler (after your leave in) that plumps like a cream and holds like gel. Or try finishing with a light defining gel and make sure your hair is very wet when you apply it so it will lock in some moister and be hydrated and soft when you 'scrunch out the crunch.'
