One of the best quotes I’ve ever heard rehearsing the curly girl method is, “you learn the rules to break the rules”. I followed CGM strictly for a year and it definitely taught me what worked with my hair and what didn’t.
I have straight hair but I watch someone who follows it and she showed the “squish to condish” method and I use that and the “prying hands” method for my masks, conditioner, leave ins and also any other products and it works great to evenly disperse the product throughout my hair even though I do have straight hair
@vero rg aren’t there a lot of affordable products that are CGM friendly? All the stuff Susie recommended in her older videos for the most part were affordable. Ever since ppl started ditching devacurl products I feel like more affordable products have been coming out of the woodwork. Like if I came across the curly girl method 5 years ago with everyone saying devacurl products are the creme de la creme of curly hair products to get the best results possible on CGM, I wouldn’t have bothered to do it cuz ya that’s stupid expensive lol
What I credit CGM for is making companies be better about ingredients like silicones and suphates -- it's a lot easier now to find good products that have a range of ingredients and don't overuse harsh ingredients.
a problem to watch out for that I'm seeing now is - silicone-free conditioners containing sulphates; and sulphate-free shampoos containing silicones! So read the list on the back of the bottle not just the banner on the front proclaiming 'free from..blah blah"
I feel like the curly girl method is like an elimination diet in a way. You start out super strict and then when you get your hair to a healthy state you slowly add things in to see how they work for your hair. And when you get frustrated with all the different techniques it's nice to take a bit of a break. 😊
That's a great analogy! I'm about 16 months in and ready to loosen up and try other things. My hair is definitely healthier now and I've learned a lot.
I've been following your channel for a few years and have learned so much from you! Your videos are fantastic and this last year I tried the curly girl method for about 5 months and it really brought my hair to life and gave me the results I needed to stick to wearing my hair wavy and feel comfortable in it. Now that I'm here, I'm having a great time adding in silicones and sulfates for different looks and results. It's so freeing and such a wonderful journey xx
The whole point of my channel was never to get people to follow the curly girl method.... it was to get people to appreciate/embrace their wavy/curly hair texture so I love this comment ❤️❤️❤️ I could defiantly use some Style Tips. I just subscribed to your channel.
Audrey Coyne watches Curly Susie! And I watch both of you! I've learned a lot from your channels, ladies...and I'm old enough to be your mother. So please know that you (both) inspire people of different walks of life to embrace their own individual style and beauty. Ah, what a nice surprise to see two of my favorite "girls" found each other!
I feel like the cgm made people flock to an extreme, equally obsessive, almost fake level of curliness. I want to embrace my natural waves, but not be a slave to upside down squish, plopping, diffusing, anti silicone, ant sulphate, hard cast, refresh every day etc, etc. I love that my waves relax into their natural waves. I want my hair to be healthy, and it happens to be wavy, but I refuse to obsess over the waves.
@@cinemaatrium3863 that is not true at all. They are not bad in any way, shape or form. People might have a preference, but that is about it. Silicones are great, and have many useful functions. The fear mongers will say all sorts of untruths. Personally, I have been using silicone free shampoos, and I do like that my scalp and roots feel cleaner longer, but I would never tell someone that silicones for hair are inherently bad.
I have 2b curls, so I have wavy hair. I don't follow the CGM 100% now but the CGM taught me these rules that I still do: -I use a sulfate free shampoo every time I shower and a sulfate shampoo every 15 days. -I use gel to make a cast and then go with an oil to break the cast. -I use a CGM approved condition. -I use a t-shirt as a towel. -My hair loves protein, so the moisture-protein balance is something I still do. The CGM taught me to care for my hair and, the need to know your hair so you can see if a product is a good option for you. Right now I diffuse my hair at max heat and that is the only way I can get definition. So I guess that the CGM is only A way to care for hair but eventually you're going to see what is best for your hair.
The other thing to remember with Mell and similar non-CGM influencers is that they also seem to regularly use bond repairers like Olaplex which will compensate somewhat for the stronger products and heat they use.
But they use bond repairs because they color their hair. If you hair is health bond repairs do nothing because there isn't what to repair. I used Olaplex while my hair was colored and It did wonders for my curls. Then I had to grow my natural hair. Olaplex did do anything for my health hair.
Yes. I have virgin hair that I don't heat style other than blow-drying. But using Olaplex #3 biweekly helps so that I can use sulphates and silicones and I can break CGM rules once in awhile.
So many influencers who have incredible curls don’t follow the CGM! I’ve even changed my mind about certain things, it can be too restrictive! Thanks for the video!
I'm never surprised when people quit CGM. It's just not possible that a one size fits all method actually works for 100% of curlies, despite various combinations of thickness, density, porosity, curl pattern, lifestyles, and weather. My hair loves shampoos, silicones, and proteins because I live in a really humid area, so I'm prone to frizz and hygral fatigue. But for somebody else, this could leave their hair dry and brittle
This is weird for me to ask but how do you find out what your hair does or doesn't like? I've tried lots of things to help my 2b waves but I've never really known what works for me
@@roselynmartinez9998 I moreso found out what wasn't working, and narrowed it down from there. A lot of ingredient analysis too. That way, I can estimate what will/won't work based on ingredients rather than trial and error. When I figured out my hair hates glycerin, I was noticing my hair was feeling MORE over moisturized each day w/o washing. That's also what made me reintroduce silicones and try more sealing oils, to seal my hair out from humidity. My hair also never felt brittle, even with some pretty high protein products, so I now use protein in multiple products every wash day. I'm about 2 years in, I have type 2 hair, and I don't always wear it curly. Sometimes blowing it out is just easier.
@@beautywearsboots6458 what shampoos and conditioners are you using? I am thinking of taking a break from cgm. Trying to find the perfect combo for my hair is like going down a rabbit hole.....and that rabbit hole is expensive!
@@taniswilliams6167 currently using the keratin line from hask. I also use one of the garnier conditioners (2nd ingredient is silicone) before I heat style or before beach/pool days in the summer. I usually prefer silicone in my styling products rather than shampoo or conditioner, because it helps seal the hair, so I usually scrunch out the crunch with frizz ease
I like Manes by Mel and Gena Marie. I think they good general hair tips to keep your hair healthy not just "follow a b and c" which i feel more of what the CGM seems to be.
One thing about cgm is that it is very “religious”. I really hated the way the Danish cgm Facebook group was so condescending if you didn’t follow the rules” very strict. I’m 1,5 year into my curly hair journey. I have found a really easy routine that really work for me(Cantu) and I really want to get some frizzy ease because my winter hair frizzes really badly
I believe anyone can have beautiful healthy hair without obsessing over the CGM, just by laying off heat styling and heavy use of products and product buildup. Less heat and product use, healthier the hair.
For 20 of 39 years I used shampoo, conditioner and leave in. The cheap ones I was able to buy from supermarkets and drugstores. I had the most amazing curls. Just wash and go. No plopping, diffusers, using a comb/silicones/sulfates and every other prohibition. Then, I discovered the method and it destroyed my hair. Now, 7 years later I am back to my old routine and my hair is on its road to recovery.
@@Willowy13 OMG SAME! CGM products honestly left me with so many splits because no matter what I tried the moisture never stayed for more than a day and a half. So I had to cut off almost a whole year's worth of growth because of the splits. And they were too heavy for my fine hair strands.
I did the curly girl method for about 6 months but my hair started to shed a lot and my scalp got super itchy using a sulphate free shampoo. Once I returned to regular shampoo my scalp stopped itching, felt a lot better and now my hair looks much better too. I also found the long drying time of not using a hair dryer was problematic in an English winter. It was interesting to try but it didn't work for me.
This happened to me also. My head was crawling itchy it was awful. I had little red bumps on my head that itched but hurt. I knew that my scalp needed something so I tired a sulfate clarifying shampoo. Seriously it was like black magic my scalp healed sooo fast and the itch was gone instantly. So I continued to wash my hair once a month with a clarifying shampoo. This allowed me to use sulfate free shampoo for the rest of the month with no symptoms just shinny healthy hair. Sulfate shampoo always makes my hair soooo frizzy so I have to deep condition after I clarify.
@Bipasha Chakraborty You can get a shampoo that helps calm down your scalp, it worked for me. Dr's prescribe it or you can buy it, there's a brand called Nizoral. I think you use it every few washes ie not every wash, and not permanently. It's a bit drying on the hair but otherwise it helped me to clear up a very itchy scalp.
@@lilyessi09 yes this was exactly the case for me except for I was the hairstylist. I had to remind myself of the importance of sulphates and throughly cleansing the scalp. I had never had a scalp problem in my life! Luckly I didnt let it get too bad and reached for my sulphate clarifying shampoo. As soon as I clarified things dramatically changed for my scalp. I kept up my clarifying routine, and my scalp has not reverted back. Also as you mentioned I was also starting to shed😱. My hair was looking better, but my scalp was crying out. I have always preached to clients that you need to LISTEN to your scalp. No matter what Scalp health is everything, and without it is a domino effect. The scalp goes to hell then so does the hair. I wish their was a video on this, its seems soooo many CGM journeys are plagued with scalp issues and developing scalp problems. It's so alarming because allot of people are confused and are just trying to hang in there, and feel their scalp is just getting used to their new routines.
Interesting how I had the opposite experience. I had pretty bad dandruff before starting the cgm and now a year in, I have no dandruff, I do use a clarifying shampoo occasionally and I dry brush it before washing it since I have a loose curl pattern. But I'm super happy my dandruff is gone and I definitely have way less split ends.
I’m actually happy you made this video! I follow very loosely the CGM, but I’m more of a 2b-2c, and because of the weather where I live and my own scalp health, I do need sulphates at least once a week. Ironically, I always used to air dry my hair but since I started styling my hair for curling, I’m using more the hair dryer and heat because my hair is too long but fine and thin and I need to dry it fast if I want volume, and I’m ok with it. But my hair is way better since I dropped the silicones, and alternating with non-sulphate shampoo, and the general styling really brought my hair to a better place.
@@CurlySusie that’s so good to know. I’m kinda sick of obsessing over my hair. Lol! But, have been scared to change anything. I think I’ll experiment a little thanks to your info!
Question for nurses!! I think you’ve mentioned in an earlier video how you manage your hair while working as a surgical nurse. As a nurse with similar hair as yours, although it just above the shoulders, I would love a video about managing hair with caps, n95s, face shields - during frequent donning and doffing- covid style.
When I found the CGM, I endlessly watch YT videos . Found methods that some women were diehard of it and some were relaxed . So I started experimenting and found what works for me .I was never going to stop coloring my hair or using hot tools I just cut it back . Thank you for showing your journey that helped me 💜
Thanks for another video, haven’t seen you for a while. You started me on the CG method and were my go-to channel around 2 years ago. I‘ll be forever grateful, because I have never loved my hair more. After several trial and errors with products, I have now found my perfect combination. I would not go back. Last year I started to grow out my grey hair and am now very curious how that will look! Your hair looks great!
I have always been CGM since long before it was named. My hair is so fine that silicone weight it down easily. I have psoriasis so sulfates aggravate my scalp. I didn't own a hair dryer for 20 years. So by default I was CGM.
I suggest you to check Lorraine Massey, the writer of Curly Girl Method. She parted ways with DevaCurl and owns her own products. It's called CurlyWorld and XYZ Curl Salon. She revolutionised curly products in terms of ingredients, simplicity, and quality. Many found this as great.
if you're getting tangling, you're not using the right cleansing techniques. It's outlined in the books and videos th-cam.com/video/ssUcbBi4FlQ/w-d-xo.html
"Don't be judgin' my hair today" 😂 Loved the video Susie! Thank you, for always being real and relatable without all the hype of trying to be trendy or over dramatic. Always a pleasure to watch your vidoes! No eye rolling here🙂
CGM taught me that I do not have the patience to wear my hair naturally curly all the time. My hair is fine and my curls are also really fragile. I learned some really useful things about keeping my hair healthy and I like the CGM shampoo & conditioner I use but unless it's a special occasion I don't use styling products or attempt to get my hair to look nice curly. I just wear it up. CGM made me come to terms with its either flat ironing or intensive CGM products/styling/time investment each wash to get my hair to look "polished/done" there really is no easy way to get my hair to behave so I'm happy with my ponytail 95% of the time.
I love manes by Mel! I follow a lot of her methods and they have worked for with 2c/3a type hair. I'm ambivalent about the CGM since not all those methods work for my hair, but it has help to make my hair a lot healthier. I switch it up with silicone and not week by week and results vary. It's nice to see others changing things up
Yes! You were the first person I watched to figure out how to deal with my hair. You were/are wonderful! I am exactly where you are now. I love the freedom I have now not being so bound by the CGM. My hair is all good!
I absolutely understand and agree with you and your standpoint. When I started my transition two years ago I stumbled over your channel and have been addicted to you ever since! If it weren’t for you my hair would still be crap. But now that it’s back to healthy I have started to try certain products that have the horrid silicones and sulfates. I don’t go crazy for them and still clarify and deep condition regularly. But anyhow, I wanna say that regardless if your strict CGM or not I’m here and gonna support you. I feel like this post is all over the place! 🤦🏻♀️ but just know I support you and where your future takes you! Thank you for helping me get my hair back to beautiful curls. I look forward to the future updates on your hair, your family, and just life in general! I’m not going anywhere! 🤟🏼😬
After just 6 months i stopped the CGM because my hair just couldn't handle it. I have been wearing my hair natural for 3 years now and I just found my own routine that works for me. And i do use sulfates and silicones ☺️☺️
@@Scup_s i use head and shoulders every two weeks. I live in Italy and i like this brand called "antica erboristeria" that does have sulfates in their shampoos but i use this brand regularly because it's a lot more gentle. I use a leave in that has silicones by bx professionals.
I'm so with you! After investing about $1,000 in a year of trying to do the curly girl method I have switched back to my Aveda products which I love. I trimmed my hair every 6 weeks. Just a dusting to make it very healthy. My scalp is healthier my curls are bouncier and I love sulfates. My hair needs sulfates. I still use a good solid gel but no more curl creams. My hair is a little bit shorter than yours with the same wave pattern and now my curls are rocking. thank you for this I think a lot of people needed to hear this! Happy New Year and many blessings in 2021
Your little guy is adorable! Thank you for the update. When I did the CGM for a while I did notice it looked less frizzy. But I also noticed when I blow dried my I got a lot more volume which I loved. So that's what I'm doing now.
I actually have natural wavy hair, a bit like susie but more looser. So, because of this, I was being bullied by many people. One time, a girl from my tuition centre just really hated me and kept saying bad things about my hair, and because of my hair, this girl also bullied my brother too. I felt so guilty about the situation, and from that day, I kept straighten my hair to avoid these situation, and also I feel so bad about myself. Anyway, I been keeping my hair straight for 6 years. Until one day, I discovered about natural curly girl. I felt so... like I'm not alone, and having natural curls is beautiful. Ive started researching CGM and being obsessed about it with quite sometime. But in the end, I feel quite tiring and not good for my mental health, plus CG products are quite hard to find in my country and really expensive. I still follow CGM but with whatever I can find or afford. This video makes me feel more better about myself and its ok that I didn't follow 100% of CGM and can still have beautiful curls. My point is listen to what your hair likes, giving the proper nutrients to your hair is important, doesn't care is CGM or not. Anyway, Thank you susie for making me feel better about myself, though I stumble your channel quite recently. Haha..
I've been through a similar journey. I now use sulfates once a week and a sulfate free shampoo in the middle of the week. It's the only way for my scalp to be ok and my hair looks much better. And silicones are amazing.
You need to keep in mind YOUR hair type in general. I have very normal hair. I don't wash it but once a week in general because if anything it will make my hair/scalp dry. Yes you don't want to weigh down your hair if you want curl and/or volume. But the whole point of silicone etc with CGM is sulphates are the main ingredient that washes silicones out. But... A lot of the alt. ingredients that are used in "silicone free" products need a good washing to remove. Do your research... Chlorides specifically. So if you find the CGM isnt working due to build-up, etc. You maybe need to incorporate a clarifying shampoo (moisturizing) or even a natural scalp scrub with natural oils like grape seed and/or flax seed (grocery section of the store) at the scalp and into length... Even if its just for a month. If you have dry scalp just massage natural oils (light ones like grape or flax) into the scalp and rinse well with cool water.
I followed the cgm for about a year. Then I slowly drifted away from it, specifically the heat component of cgm. You have been an excellent guide of what I should use in my hair, so thank you. Also can you do a tutorial on your bangs? My bangs are a hot mess and I need some guidance.
As a rule, I generally avoid silicones for the most part....but when I do use them, it's right before I clarify. I try to do that every 2-4 weeks then deep condition after.
Hi Susie, I'd enjoy seeing a 'reboot' (refresh?) video of what method your doing currently. Now that you've come full circle, perhaps people who still need direction would be helped with a demonstration? I'm guessing that people who missed the boat with CGM movement are confused.
I think higher heat with a diffuser is still pretty low damage because it's indirect heat. Especially if you're just hovering the diffuser and dryer around your head/hair (IE the hover diffuse method from Manes by Mel). I will also cup my hair with my hands without squeezing it and aim the drier at the hair without touching it. I do this almost immediately when I start drying because it helps with the more 'curl resistant' parts of my hair. Then I do the roots and avoid the ends/lengths until the very end and that's when I turn the heat and speed of the drier down and I cup my hair in the diffuser. Ive also never been 100% CG. I use what works for me and follow it loosely but I am not too fussed about following it exactly
Lol, those straight/wavy bits. So I have 3a hair but random straight and wavy bits. I don't mind them but they look disgusting when they are frizzy. They look like pubes. So I must them down. Then I use leave in conditioner on them. Then I finger coil them. So now they don't look like the rest of my curls but at least they don't look like dry pubes. I'll hold them with a little mousse and Aussie refresh curl spray. And seal them with Moroccan oil. And now I still have straight/wavy bits but they look smooth and they blend better. They actually look cool cause I think mix texture look so cool especially day 4-6 when my hair gets fluffier.
I've recently this last month been embracing my natural curls which has a involved learning how to work with them. Very first video I watched is Susie's which I have to say has been the most informative, straight forward and not much fuss and over complicating things. I have sinned watch a lot of different TH-cam videos on curly hair and not Susie's but a lot more f them leave me feeling really overwhelmed and confused to all hell with all the products...most f which are expensive and over complicated routines 🤦♀️🤦♀️ . I've finally had to say enough and just stick to Susie's videos because the others I watched started stressing me out with information overload and to much fuss and muss. And again so many of the videos involve a lot of different expensive products...I'm okay with splurging a little on a few things but I don't have an endless budget for hair products and I don't want have to spend a bunch of money on products for winter, spring and summer...I realize I might have to switch up a product or two according to the weather but not everything entirely. Sorry that was my small vent after getting overwhelmed with so many of the tutorials on TH-cam and just going to stick to the couple of sensible, trustworthy and easy ones that I like one of which is Susie's.
It sounds like you needed more moisture in your routine to get that protein/moisture balance (Thanks to Mell and Amanda, I love them!) I do a mix of products. Every time I find something I love, it’s either discontinued or it’s reformulated.
I don’t like sulphates and silicones on my scalp, they make me really itchy. I actually started using the viori shampoo bar and their conditioner bar because I’m trying to reduce plastic purchases.
after having my hair damaged by devacurl i questioned a lot about the cgm. ultimately i decided to massively simplify. I still follow the cgm mostly with avoiding sulfates, silicones and heat, and my routine is now simpler than ever...i can get by with one product and im happy.
The only part of the CG method that I've followed consistently for years is avoiding silicones at all costs and only using heat rarely. I also have not used permanent dye in about five years. That's how my hair is its happiest. Edit: I also only use microfiber hair wrap or a cotton T-shirt to dry my hair by plopping.
You are an inspiration, I'm over 50 and my hair sheds a lot, also takes forever to dry. After using curl enhancers, aka loads of alcohol, I had no idea how dry it was. I don't need to have a jillion steps, but what I have adopted is gold. 🙇♀️ many thanks.
I was cgm religiously for 18 months and also did a big chop... my hair became healthy and my waves and curls super defined. Now I mix up my products and include sulphates and some silicones, my only rule is always use a silicone-free shampoo with gentle sulphates and I revert back to cgm for a few washes in a row to maintain my hair health and clarify my hair every month. It's been a liberating process and super thankful to cgm for returning my hair back to health but it's nice to have more options too
Totally agree & If silicone worked really well in my hair I’d probably use it more often. My big “cheat” is that sometimes on a special occasion I curl some of my hair with a curling iron & I love the way it looks. I don’t want to do it so much that I’m back to heat-damaging my hair but it’s nice every once & awhile ❤️
My niece who is a stylist said it is better to switch up what you use because your hair gets used to one product which I found works really well for me.
My biggest issue for CGM is that our access to products up here in Canada. Shea butter seems like a bit of a no-go to me, and I try to avoid lots of coconut.
Recently I’ve fallen in love with Mel and Amanda’s channel and the way they do their hair so I’m really glad you’re bringing up manes by mel. I never thought I would use silicones on my hair even a few months ago but what she has to say makes so much sense. I really like how she backs up her facts with science
My dissatisfaction with CGM was the high amount of glycerin in the approved products. I went back to using Infusium and discovered I need protein more than moisture and to stay as far away from glycerin as possible. I scaled back my routine a lot and I get even better results. I'm a big fan of Hask shampoo and conditioner which I use every other day, a curl cream, a setting gel and hairspray after diffusing. Also, since discovering the protein and glycerin equation there is almost ne frizz and a lot more 2C curls and a lot less money and stress.
I heard about curly girl methode only recently. Must have been living under a rock. What I really do not like is the amount of plastic waste some routines create. For me caring for yourself and caring for the environment should not create a contradiction. I switched my old standard haircare products to a shampoo bar and a conditioner bar with ingredients that fulfill the requirements and are sold in simple cardboard. I do flaxseed and oil and that is it. Mostly airdry sometimes diffusor on low heat. My curls are beautiful now and I am happy not to spend a lot of time and money on it. You are right, CGM imo should be seen as an inspiration, not a cult.
I stopped using silicones way before I heard about the CGM. My hair is fine with a tight curl pattern. I won't use silicones at home, but my hairdresser has used silicone products in my hair which is fine. Here's why I won't use silicones: my hair looked fantastic when I used them; Frizz Ease was my holy grail product. But, if I didn't use them, my hair looked terrible. It was dry, the curls wouldn't form well, it was frizzy. I haven't put silicones in my hair for @15 years, and my hair looks much better. I can wash & condition my hair, not use any styling product, and my hair looks good.
I’ve tried the curly girl method and cowashing is not for me!! I use curly curly girl friendly products, but I like to wet brush my hair in the shower and use heat when I diffuse. To each their own. What works for me might not work for you. And that’s ok.
I've moved on to a more flexible personal version of CG. I take into consideration of the ingredients that I buy now, some things like purple shampoo and heat protectant spray are defs not CG approved. The rest of my stuff varies, I try new things, mostly playing attention to how high up humectants are in the list of ingredients and no sulphates and no pabarens silicones(always). Same as looking for products that have protein because I've learned my hair loves protein. This is after two years of being CG and learning the ropes and trying to revive my curls after 10+ of curl-hate and DAILY heat. My hair is curly and healthy and it has grown so much in these two years, even with me bleaching my roots to maintain the blonde I've had for 3+ years. I only get a trim pretty much once a year. As you mentioned, I'm in a healthier place, no heat besides twice a week diffusing. I love my hair now because of my CG journey but I am not a ride or die. It was a rite of passage for me. Thankful, but open and welcoming change with everything I have learned.
Greetings from Texas. You were the first person i followed when i started CGM. Your curl pattern is very close to mine. I have learned SO much about my hair. Ultimately my goal is to have beautiful hair not necessarily follow the CGM obsessively. Transition was hard for me so i'm not willing to completely go back but i am a bit more flexible. After being burned a few times in Facebook groups i stopped participating and mostly just follow a few people here on TH-cam.
I never really heat styled and couldn't even get all of my hair to be wavy before CG. Now I've got mostly 2b with some 2c in places after a year of CG. Definitely works well for me for the time being, but everyone has to do what works for them!
I thought that now that my hair is healthy & curly I could go back to “regular” styling products & heat but it just did nothing for my hair really 🤷🏻♀️
It’s so refreshing to hear a Caper accent on TH-cam. I am 3 years into the CGM and happy (for the most part) with the result. I just find that my curls change so much from one day to the next depending on weather, season, wash days and products. I really don’t know if I’ve found the right combo of products for each season for me. Best of luck with your hair journey and thanks for sharing with us!
I have weak curls too lol ugh feel you! I just started the cgm in a relaxed way cause my hair is not healthy but it’s been getting lots healthier now. I used to hate my hair. I’m happy your style is evolving and I’ll keep watching your channel for more info! I’m thankful you made this video. I agree lots of ppl give the cgm a bad review after trying it for a short time but not giving the method a chance to heal their hair. Or like you said they use the wrong products.
Can you do a video with all your favorite products? You turned me on to biotera and I'm curious to see what other products you use that might work for my looser curl pattern. Thanks.
I’ve learned that porosity has a lot to do with everything too! I have low porosity hair and am finding products that don’t just sit on the top of my hair and now I will try deep conditioning with heat to soften and reduce frizz.....cutie pie baby you have there!
I had sooo many issues with cgm! One size does not fit all! I am 2b at best without cgm, fine-ish, and thinning on top . Found it did not address: ~ dry hair/dry scalp/fungal issues - I have to wash every three days or get the fungal problem ~ aging hair - mine is more frizzy, brittle and dry, build up was NOT helped by the demoncurl build up remover, ~ my curl pattern/hair loss was from the build up not being removed properly NOR often enough. My loss (though... could be aging) and pattern never returned either! I experimented A LOT and finally settled on Innersense products. Shampoo for fine/medium hair, colored hair conditioner in winter, fine/medium conditioner in summer, Lift Foam, then Volumizer and maybe a little Wave Spray at the end for hold. Oil for shine and scalp. Their oil is amazing for my hair! I finally found an oil that helped my scalp and hair without being too weighed down and greasy!!! Helps with scalp and product exfoliation too!
I live in a place with really hard water so have to use every week or two to stop my hair getting weighed down. This means I use silicones sometimes too because they don't get built up much either. Beyond this, I found following CGM really strictly took so much time and didn't always look great, especially on second day hair (I have hair more wavy than curly). I've been adapting it more so that I can keep my hair as healthy as possible but sometimes brushing it out while it air dries until it's only really loosely waved, or can do a more CGM method and have lovely waves, and I've found it's made me so much happier to do it like this.
Hello from Winnipeg, I"m new to CGM but with 3a type baby fine hair I have mostly just worn it frizzy. LOL. CGM taught me a lot, but I'm still playing and learning. Thanks for your videos, this especially, it's very helpful.
I have wavy hair, but struggle with the CGM because it takes FOREVER to dry! If I wash my hair in the morning before work and air dry, it will still be wet when I get home from work. I can never get the curls dry!
I’m swavy-2b-c with fragile curl. I cannot get a decent style or complete dry with a blow dryer. So I wash my hair at night, apply product, plop for 20-30 min, the sleep on a silk pillowcase covered in a t-shirt. I drape my hair over the pillow. Perfectly dry after 8 hours! My curls stay better with 8 hours of no gravity. Hope this helps! 🙂
This video is so informative! Thank you for sharing your findings. I'm new to the curly girl method, and I've wondered how strict I need to be. This was so helpful!
I used the curly girl method as a starting point. I have never fully transitioned to the curly girl method because I dye my hair and once in a blue moon I like to straighten it. I have learned about how to style and protect my hair so much better than I did before. As a curly girl with a mom that has straight hair i was washing conditioning and running a brush through it dry daily (the brushing caused a ton of frizz) So I have embraced my hair a lot more especially having it down which helps with the fact that I have recently found out I prefer shorter hair. So some things have helped others I’m not as strict about because for me personally the change isn’t needed. I get other people see better results without using silicones and sulfates when I first switch because my hair was dyed to sulfate free and eventually silicone free it didn’t change. So I keep enjoying products I love as I try new ones.
I think the problem with a lot of people is expectations and manipulating your hair into something it’s not. My hair is naturally wavy. I can manipulate my hair into becoming curly. But that isn’t my natural hair. Your hair Susie I think is naturally wavy and I think it looks great wavy.
Love the video! I like that you questioned the method and tired other thing to see what works best for your hair. instead of cutting out certain ingredients and techniques just because it said so, I like that you went out and found out what these ingredients do.
Everything you’ve said is so spot on!! I used the CGM to get my waves healthy, but it doesn’t bother me at all that my hair stylist uses some non-CGM products on my hair (the brand Surface is excellent). I think 99% of all my products at home are CGM, but if 1 slips in every now and then that isn’t, i don’t freak out that I’m going to lose out on the progress I’ve made. To each their own!
Longtime fan, great vid as usual! I stopped buying Shea Moisture because they were bought by Unilever, so now I’m trying out various trial packed from smaller, women- and minority-owned companies, so I’m having a similar experience for different reasons. It was great to hear that you found comfort again, and I’m sure I will, too. PS That is one gorgeous young man!
Thank you for this! I do a combo of the curly girl method and what works for my hair. After about two years of being CG I realized that I was quickly losing color in my hair. (I color my greys) And after listening to the Beauty Brains podcast I found out that it’s silicone that helps protect your hair from water and weather damage. I have two huskies and I walk several times a day outside and that’s why I was losing my color. I added back in an Aveda prep product that Manes by Mel talks about all the time- Damage Remedy daily hair repair. It kept my color from bleeding out within a couple of weeks. I have let go of the “rules” and have just been figuring out what works for my hair. I also started using the red Redken shampoo and conditioner for the week (2 or 3 washes) after getting my hair colored.
Omg your video hit me hard.... I’ve tried sooooooo many products and didn’t work, until I started watching Mel’s Manes. My curls are great in the back and I learned to force the front with the Delman or finger coil by Mel. Thank you for your honesty.
I was thinking you were another one of those "curlfluencers" who decided to quit cgm, so they can promote more crappy products 😄 Glad I watched till the end. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!
Wow, this was so interesting!!! Thank you for taking one for the curly team and experimenting and sharing your experience! You explained everything so well💜 and your baby is adorable!😊
Of course I would’ve supported 😇 you in your journey with the not CG products, BUT since we sort of have the same curl pattern, you have the most down to earth method I’m secretly SO glad you didn’t!! Cheers from the Netherlands.
Great video Susie! My take away is (and I have believed this for a while now), every curly head is different and you need to do what works for your hair to get it healthy and keep it healthy. I, too love Manes by Mell and since becoming a fan of hers, I feel that there are no hard fast rules that must be adhered to. It is not like the hair police will come knocking at your door and take the products with silicone in them out of your shower and put them in hair purgatory! ;-)
Yay another Curly Susie video! Love this video. I think it's important to do what works for your hair. While the CGM can be restrictive, there are ways of tweaking the method so it works for you. I really enjoy your videos and all the helpful tips and tricks you offer. Do you ever do heatless curls? I would be interested in seeing different methods to achieve heatless curls. I did sock curls the other day and love the big bouncy curls so much I don't want to wash my hair. Happy New Year and greetings from Ontario
Beautiful baby!!!!! ; ) When you describe your hair it's like describing mine! No kidding! I don't follow the CGM to the "T" but I do use products that are natural w/o the parabens, etc. and it does so much better. My curls look great and my hair looks healthy.! Glad to hear you're back to following the CGM Susie. Your hair looks awesome! You and your family stay well.
I was desperate after a bad haircut rho figure out what to do with my hair. And I found your videos! I hadn't ever heard of the cgm and you opened up a whole new world to me! But honestly, I'm way simple, way low maintenance. I don't like buying products and feeling trapped by them. I also can only have so many steps in my routine. Soooo... I used cgm rho determine what not to do to my hair or at least what to minimize. I use castille soap mixed with coconut milk as a shampoo and body wash. Sometimes i condition my hair but most if the time i just rinse with apple cider vinegar. I use gel but i don't love the cream i have so won't buy that again. I plop and I tend to air dry because I'm lazy. On dry day 3 hair, I'll apply my homemade dry shampoo. Maybe day 4, I'll use three baking soda in the dry shampoo to help scrub my hair. By rube end of the week, I'll just use my husband's suave to wash it. My point is: definitely NOT cgm but my hair is as curly and healthy as ever. I understand my hair better now too. And realizing and embracing that it's my hair, if I feel like crimping it one day, I do. If I feel like letting it fall straight instead if refreshing, I do. If I feel like using high heat to Gerry banging waves, I do. It's my hair. And I make it suit me and my life. I say to everyone - learn about it, embrace it, and then do you! I'll always be so thankful I found your videos. You saved me!
I just recently started using sulfates and silicones again in my shampoo and conditioner after 1 1/2 years CGM. However, my stylers are CGM, as are the products and techniques that I use. I will continue with this practice until my hair complains. Baby Hank is adorable, and I wish we could have seen Willson. Thanks for the video! ❤️
Suzie I’m in the same boat, my hair is 2c-3a and silicones just weigh my curls down. I have a routine that works for me without sulfates, silicones or heat. I even use the abhorred Deva Curl UD gel, works for me like no other. I’ll stick to the method too cause I like what it does for my hair. To each their own so no shame on whoever chooses to quit it.
I love this! I pretty much had to give up CGM when I developed seborrheic dermatitis. It's pretty much impossible to find a medicated shampoo without some kind of sulfate in it. I also have developed some sort of fragrance sensitivity, so it already is so limiting to then also have to find products that are CG-friendly.
As I am has a line for "dry and itchy scalp" that uses salicylic acid, Piroctone Olamine, and zinc pyrithione as their active ingredients. My mom has psoriasis, and some of those ingredients have worked for her, though she hasn't tried this line.
Dry brushing wavy hair is likely the best way. However hair like mine 3b 3c, good luck lol. My curls lock together become one, and their is no pulling them apart. Unless your ripping threw them 😱 so I could never. So tighter curls beware this is not a good idea for you. However wavy girls enjoy, its great for scalp health. It stimulates the scalp and helps distributing your natural oils threw your hair on days 2,3 and 4. You will loose definition in your waves after brushing them. However they will still be beautiful in a different way. If though you are like sussie and prefer the curliest you, then I would refresh after dry brushing. This will bring back the definition.
I follow some of the rules still. I steer clear of silicones. I don't cowash and use sulfates sometimes. Don't dry brush ever. And I still load up on condition we rs. It just seems to work best for me.
You’re the best! I needed to see this today. Your videos inspired me to start embracing my curls, and I followed the CGM until I realized that it was too complicated and strict to be sustainable. I have learned so much about my hair and carry that knowledge with me-while also trying non-CGM products and using heat when I want a new style. :)
I’ve tried the curly girl method off and on over the years. It always gives good results but I found I wasn’t getting as good results after using heavy silicone products then trying to go back. There are some products so heavy I couldn’t get them out with regular sulfate shampoo and that’s why the method wasn’t working as well for me. Using a deep cleansing shampoo really helps with the build up from silicones and waxes. The build up would make me so itchy and make me think I had dandruff! I still have to use low lather shampoo and a deep cleaning shampoo now and then to keep my scalp happy!! I’m glad you found what works for you 😊
She also lives in the Eastern part of Canada in Nova Scotia, which is why there are similarities. I live in Ontario (middle of Canada, roughly) and have a completely different accent.
One of the best quotes I’ve ever heard rehearsing the curly girl method is, “you learn the rules to break the rules”. I followed CGM strictly for a year and it definitely taught me what worked with my hair and what didn’t.
I never 100% followed it, but it gave me good ideas for taking care of my hair.
I don’t even know if I ever 100% followed it but pretty close 😅
Same here Hannah.
The women who wrote the book about it even revised it. So yeah there isn't just one thing that works for all.
@@SueRosalie and conditioners that say no sulfates and have silicones and shampoos that say no silicones and have sulfaces in.
I feel like the curly girl method is like an elimination diet in a way. You start out super strict and then when you get your hair to a healthy state you slowly add things in to see how they work for your hair. And when you get frustrated with all the different techniques it's nice to take a bit of a break. 😊
brilliant point...Peach Tea! it really is like an elimination diet and a learning you own healthy hair state. nice!
This 🙌🏼
This is sooo true. When I transitioned I followed the cgm. Once my hair became healthy I quit and used what ever the hell works on my curls.
Yes! 👍🏻👍🏻
Soo happy to see you here!❤️ I love your channel and I literally read your comment with your voice in mind😂
You should stay away from silicons anyway. Its not just bad for your hair but for skin as well.
Silicones are safe but they do distort your natural curl pattern.
*Not permanently but for that specific wash.
@@TheCozyCrimeCorner silicones are safe and benefit straight hair but as we know are problematic for curly hair
@@sigh_anna Silicones are still extremely bad for the environment ;)
I have 2b curls, so I have wavy hair. I don't follow the CGM 100% now but the CGM taught me these rules that I still do:
-I use a sulfate free shampoo every time I shower and a sulfate shampoo every 15 days.
Great point Emily!!!
@@beautywearsboots6458 thank you... I may try adding some silicones to my routine. I have some products on hand...will see what happens...
I like Manes by Mel and Gena Marie. I think they good general hair tips to keep your hair healthy not just "follow a b and c" which i feel more of what the CGM seems to be.
I quit a few months ago! Other than my curls looking better in my opinion, my routine has simplified and gotten so much quicker.
It's the same in sweden... but we'r kinda family so im not supprised🤣🤣

@@lilyessi09 Yes maybe. I was getting quite worried with all the hair shedding. It's a lot better now, no itchyness and shedding has reduced.
Thank you for your candor and observations. I love how down you earth you are. And, your baby is adorable!
I was sort of hoping some sort of dramatic change would happen but It was just sort of “meh” lol
Thank you for showing your journey that helped me 💜
I miss not having to think about ‘protein moisturize balance’ Like ....can’t I just use Pert all in one again? Lol..
Hahaha...best thing I’ve heard in awhile
Right?! Also everything has protein in it smdh my hair gets sad and limp!
CGM started to feel like a toxic cult. Also my hair just needs silicones, I can’t detangle without breaking a lot of hair if I don’t have silicones.
I agree with you whole heartedly. My hair loves silicones.
if you're getting tangling, you're not using the right cleansing techniques. It's outlined in the books and videos th-cam.com/video/ssUcbBi4FlQ/w-d-xo.html
also you may actually need a haircut
if you're resorting to silicone, you're not understanding the method and I'll bet you don't have the handbook
"Don't be judgin' my hair today" 😂
Loved the video Susie!
I save the non-CGM products for those times when you really want your hair to turn out and last (ie special occasions)
Same!
you seem like such a lovely person, Suzy! Thanks for keeping us updated on your hair! I always look forward to them
After just 6 months i stopped the CGM because my hair just couldn't handle it. I have been wearing my hair natural for 3 years now and I just found my own routine that works for me. And i do use sulfates and silicones ☺️☺️
What sulfates and silicone products do you use?
@@Scup_s i use head and shoulders every two weeks.
I live in Italy and i like this brand called "antica erboristeria" that does have sulfates in their shampoos but i use this brand regularly because it's a lot more gentle.
I use a leave in that has silicones by bx professionals.
Exactly, the CG method helps us love our curls. I follow all of it except I clarify twice a week with normal shampoo and love that normal shampoo.
Same!
Yep - always the products that work are discontinued or deleted - I feel you there 🌟
I don’t like sulphates and silicones on my scalp, they make me really itchy.
What product do you use? I’m thinking of simplifying my routine too. Thanks!
Love it! Sometimes we just have to try things to remind us that we’re still doing the right thing. Your hair is gorgeous!
Intro was really interesting and made a lot of sense to me, definitely not too long 😊
I stopped using silicones way before I heard about the CGM.
@@missMediaChick I'm sure I do because I don't check labels for sulfates.
I’ve tried the curly girl method and cowashing is not for me!! I use curly curly girl friendly products, but I like to wet brush my hair in the shower and use heat when I diffuse. To each their own. What works for me might not work for you. And that’s ok.
"oh my jeez" lol Thanks Susie this is super interesting! Thank you!
Hey Susie! Never too long of an intro for me! You always give great real info and I appreciate it! 🥰
You know what's strange? I've been doing the CGM for almost three years and my hair got straighter and straighter :D
Love your baby Hank!
mine too!
I lost volume and sometimes it gets more limp. I'm really thinking about using regular shampoo more often
Same!! I had beautiful ringlets and curl clumps and now my hair is limp, lifeless, and barely even wavy now.
Thanks.
Yes Ma’am
I’ve learned that porosity has a lot to do with everything too! I have low porosity hair and am finding products that don’t just sit on the top of my hair and now I will try deep conditioning with heat to soften and reduce frizz.....cutie pie baby you have there!
Oh do you have any recommendations about products? My hair is also super low porosity!
I loved your long intro Susie! Haha I've been wondering a lot of the same things so it was great to hear you discuss them.
I had sooo many issues with cgm! One size does not fit all!
I am 2b at best without cgm, fine-ish, and thinning on top . Found it did not address:
~ dry hair/dry scalp/fungal issues - I have to wash every three days or get the fungal problem
~ aging hair - mine is more frizzy, brittle and dry, build up was NOT helped by the demoncurl build up remover,
~ my curl pattern/hair loss was from the build up not being removed properly NOR often enough.
If I washed my hair at 7am it wouldn’t be dry until around 1-2 and I HATED it
This video is so informative!
Aww beautiful baby boy!🤗 I think he looks so much like you!
I think it was an informative video. Thank you for experimenting for us!😉
Everything you’ve said is so spot on!!
I was strict for 4 months, but I like the flexibility of not following it 100%.
I still use the same cheap products that Ive used since I started..... booooooorrrrring! 😂
Too much protein will break your hair off! The anti-snap product is meant for extremely damaged hair
This is you “not dolled up”? You are gorgeous! I’m probably 80-90% CGM. Eat the meat and spit out the bones.
What a great expression Anita! Never heard that before.
@@beautywearsboots6458 I'll check this out, thank you!!
Absolutely, my scalp needs a good dry brush most days or it really complains and affects the health of my hair
I’m glad you found what works for you 😊
Just love your honesty
i love your canadian accent!! it’s fascinating because i live in the northeastern part of the U.S and there are so many similarities.
She also lives in the Eastern part of Canada in Nova Scotia, which is why there are similarities. I live in Ontario (middle of Canada, roughly) and have a completely different accent.
EyeKnow1111 yeah exactly i always wanted to go up to canada. nova scotia looks really pretty.
