Charles Austin went from 8th place in the 1992 Olympics to the gold medal in 1996! Artur Partyka upgraded from bronze in 1992 to silver. Steve Smith went from 12th place in 1992 to the bronze medal.

In my opinion, Artur Partyka's successful jump for 2.37 was so impressively high, it would have cleared Javier Sotomayor's 2.45 World record.

Partyka had the height to clear 8-2 on that 2.37 jump.

Steve Smith was in great form in this competition, and did Liverpool proud with his performance

These 3 guys have massive height and approach in high jump.

I have that whole evening session on tape and it's a shame the BBC didn't show Partyka's two attempts at 2.41m - on one of them his high point was only slightly out in relation to the bar.

partyka's 237 jump was most incredible

Yes, partyka's Jump looked really high, but that Charles Austin jump at 7ft 10in was also crazy.

It really was. He soared over that bar. It didn’t look he really caught that same rhythm in the jumps after this because he definitely had more height in him based on that jump. Absolutely flawless

@@schao7555 Definitely. And to do it under that much pressure, needing to clear an Olympic record just to stay in the competition. The stakes couldn’t have been higher.

I was there in Atlanta seeing it live, but I didn't know he had such clearance to be WR/8ft height. Wow impressed

Charles Austin is certainly one of the greatest high jumpers of all time along with Sotomayor, sjöberg and Barshim
