Brilliant how we are shown the speed of each long jumper when they hit the board e.g. 39 kph, really gives you a sense of how fast these guys have to go to jump a good distance, don't remember seeing that feature in a broadcast for any other major long jump that I'm aware of And Mike Powell's injury is absolutely distressing and heartbreaking to see
I happened to be at this event when Carl Lewis becomes the Olympics most celebrated T&F athlete. HOWEVER, I was in the concession line taking forever to get Hot Dogs and Nachos and missed his winning jump. I did see Powell ran into the sand. That was one of the saddest things I’ve seen in sports.
Pity he does not hold the WR. So many jumps over 8,50, so many years unbeaten...and the day you jump 4 times over 8,80 (again, 8,80!!) Powell pulls out that wonder... I've always thought Lewis was a phenomenal long jumper that happened to run quite fast.
Mad though that Lewis' 8.91m jump didn't count because it was slightly wind assisted whereas Beamon's 8.90m counted despite the much bigger advantage of altitude!
@@fender1000100 Yes, 8,79 seems unreachable for the current generation...and all other generations since his times, actually. Some years ago a German set the European indoor record with an amazing 8,71. He never got within 30 cm of that one again.... Actually Lewis is the only one who has many leaps not far from his top from the top 4. Powell and Emmiyan's second bests are +25 below...and Beamon's was more than 50 cm!
The Long Jump wasn't an athletics event it was an art form when Lewis was involved. Unbelievable technique.

Un champion hors du commun
Il più grande di sempre sul salto in lungo. È sfuggito solo il primato del mondo.
I can hardly put Usain Bolt ahead of Carl Lewis. That's how great is the Son of the Wind 🌬️

He still holds the indoor record though for over 40 years now. And has most of the 10 longest jumps in history.

His 10 year unbeaten streak and 4 consecutive Olympic golds are something else.
Carl Lewis a lenda .
El último baile del hijo del viento .
Javier Satomayer was better than him. The high jump is a harder discipline than long jump😂
