Ouendan games are really special to me. They were my first experience with actual raw Japanese culture that wasn't localised (like Pokémon). I ended up learning some Japanese so I could understand the story better and forming my first individual music tastes from the soundtrack of the first game when I was in sixth grade. Now I've lived in Japan for a short while and am learning programming to hopefully move back in a year or two. They were also the first rhythm games I was actually good at, working my way up from failing easy to getting all 300s on very hard. I've loved rhythm games an play all sorts now, but the Ouendan series will always be my favourite. Thank you so much for the video. It really made me happy getting to learn the history of the games and get some closure.

Elite Beat Agents has one of the greatest series of covers I've ever heard. At least half of the regular songs I don't care about, but the covers made me love them.
I remember trying a demo of EBA at launch and it just didn't click with me. I kept reading the high score reviews, but didn't buy it at launch mainly because of the demo. A few months later, I found it on sale for $10 in my local Toy R Us and decided why the heck not. Glad I did. As soon as I got the rhythm down, I was addicted to this game for a few months. Even a few months after completing the normal difficulty and putting it down, I picked it up again a little under a year later while on vacation and got addicted again, this time playing on hard. Unlocked the cheerleaders difficulty, but never got passed the 3rd or 4th song. That's when I knew I was done. Easily my most favorite DS game. Thank you for posting this and putting a smile on my face.
Fantastic in-depth look at one of the most underappreciated DS games of all time. I can tell a lot of work and love went into this project, and it definitely shows!
Really happy to see an extensive video on these games. Elite Beat Agents is one of my favorite games ever. It really is just this mix of incredibly fun gameplay, great humor, and a couple of gut punches that can make anybody shed some manly tears. I really hope that they make a new one one of these days. There's a lot they can do with it with improved hardware. Of course, with no current DS system available, it will probably be a long time before we get the chance of it happening. But man, if they ever drop a new entry, ACTUALLY BUY IT, people!
I played all 3 of these games back in the day and absolutely loved them all to death. Probably my favorite games on the Nintendo DS. All 3 games made me cry as well.
If we ever see an EBA/Ouendan installment on Switch, it'd be neat to see some kind of motion controls similar to the original arcade concept with the fan controllers and whatnot. Might make some interesting sync with the dances of the characters and everything. Either way, this series has a special place in my heart.
This video is so very bittersweet. I bought this game when I was 8 because my cousins showed it to me. Never has a game impacted my life more. I’ve been working on my same save file since and finally completely beat it this year. I cried so much. Elite beat agents was an absolutely perfect game and even more than 10 years later I was still getting content out of it. Until this year I didn’t even know there were two Japanese exclusive games and screamed. I beat both of them in a week. It’s so refreshing to finally see the games getting attention again but it’s quite over shadowed by the fact that we will probably never see the agents dancing to save the world ever again. In the back of my mind for the last 10 years I have been silently dreaming for nintendo to give us a surprise EBA 2 reveal during a direct and how much I would cry and scream when they did. Hell even thinking about it makes me cry. The agents making it into smash would be the ultimate reveal for me aside from geno. I thank you for finally giving a larger light to these games. They deserve it so much. The video is so well done. Thank you.
One of the best games I have ever played since I was a kid, it gave me motivation to not give up, I totally love it. It even is a spirit in SSBU! Im so glad people still remember this franchise
Knowing that we could have had a Ouendan 3 for the 3DS is just too heart breaking for me Ouendan 2 is still one of my favorite games of all time and it's really important to me
Never forget team Inis, "No one needs you more than I need you!" Missing my favorite Walkie Talkie Men, here's hoping a pitch for a mobile or Switch game would turn heads in the digital market.
Incredible video. I'm a huge fan of Ouendan and EBA, and the fact you managed to get hold of the original developers and do a deep dive like this is amazing. The tidbits surrounding EBAs development was fantastic, and I'd never heard most of these details. Disco Rangers is a hella rad name. Really unfortunate a 3DS game never materialized, I would had been all over that.
It's amazing to see a video like this on such an underappreciated series. I gotta say though the last stage of Ouendan 1 is still the best use of Ready Steady Go of all time, I'll never forget how pumped I was playing it for the first time
so the biggest reason why the game never got a sequel was because it was too expensive to license songs. understandable, but i wonder if it was possible for the game to use original songs instead, but i guess it would lose half its appeal.
"We love you agents!" This game's spirit, both Ouedan and EBA, helped get me through most of art school. I owe these games a lot, and this entire thing has had me crying a little. Thanks for making this. This documentary for giving us insights that we wouldn't have known otherwise.
Also, I dunno if the creators are reading the comments, but Elite Beat Agents are the reason I got into any of the good good music back in High School, and Ouendan is the reason I even knew any Japanese music to begin with. I really really from the bottom of my heart want to thank you all for the good times and the defining moments in my life.
Just like the director I had a level make me cry. It was level 12: a Christmas gift, with the song you are my inspiration. I was in tears when I finished that level, it was just beautiful. THANK YOU.
Didn't expect to see a video on this serie! I love EBA, first heard about it in the videogame store I worked at the time by a guy who bought it in import (wasn't available in my country until a few years later); as soon as I had the possibility I bought it and instantly fell in love with it. On my first trip to Japan, one of my main goal was to find the other two japanese game, and I did! Now I'm the happy possessor of the collection and really hope there will be more! Thank you for making this video! :)
Or, what if they speak English, but they speak like a bad English anime dub, and their lip flaps don't match their dialog at all. Or just get the people who voiced Cromartie High's English dub.
wow, is this THE most informative video on this channel or what? no one single bit of "we couldnt manage to make contact with them" or "oh, i dont remember that part of development too well". all questions were asked and answered by the people and all the memories were well remembered. also these guys should really try again with the Switch being a thing, like damn. indies are doing great and it has a damn touch screen, and there are already a few run of the mill rhythm games that seem to do well. this would probably explode with it having a little more presence since it debut. if anything they should totally continue as an arcade system, i see lots of weird ass rhythm games at the arcade and even Nintendo has arcade stuff. Luigi's Mansion arcade is not something i expected to see, but it is a thing. edit: wait i just realized. the whole video was about Ouendan, but they made Gitaroo man? that game is awesome if not hard as fuck to play. lol
Thanks so much. I'm glad you liked it. There was a fair bit of people not remembering stuff but I just kept digging deeper until I found people who did.
Man, Elite beat agents holds some really special memories and my heart from the original DS era. When you put the clip of the leader saying agents are go I felt this massive wave of nostalgia and just could not stop laughing. The DS was also the very first platform I ever played a Castlevania game on (Dawn of Sorrow) and I have some incredibly fond memories of recess in high school playing this game at the same time with my best friend while me and him discuss the stories and made our own EBA comics during classes to share with each other when school got out.
A video about Osu and EBA? And it's 30 minutes long? Awesome! And there's also an old GDC talk about the series that I haven't listened to? Even better! I really wish we will see the series again someday even though it seems unlikely. If it does, I'll make sure that every single one of my friends buys it too so we don't end up in this situation again.
This is an excellent video. It’s so thorough and well edited. I always appreciate seeing such quality content on a platform that prioritizes low effort, high volume videos. Keep up the good work!!!
Best game of NDS, I was one of the guys who imported from Japan.... and I dont speak japanese. These games (especially Ouendan 1) helped me A LOT in a difficult time of my life. Thanks to everyone involved with it.
@Andrew Crawford yes 4 different modes and three of them are ripped off from other games this "game" was never "original" and i wonder why this became so popular and even more popular than original games when it was supposed to be only an emulator
My brother and I loved playing EBA as kids and I've been watching a lot of videos of people playing both EBA and Ouendan lately. Then I found this one and it was fun learning about both games' origins. It's such a shame they never got any more sequels. I have to say, I love the character designs and music from both and I'm even working on an Agent Chieftain cosplay as we speak. I'm also tempted to do an Ouendan one in the future.
Absolutely criminal that the game never got a sequel in the west. Rhythm games are more popular than ever before, they'd make absolute bank if there was a way to develop it on Switch, as it has touchscreen capability.
I absolutely love your work liam, so well researched and prepped. I dont even mind how occasional we get them, they are just that good. Your vids inspire part of my passion of gaming.
I absoluetly adore this series and I'm heartbroken they didn't continue with it. Osu! isn't the same without the touchscreen stylus and the charm these games have
I remember when I first learned about Ouendan on IGN and it subsequently becoming the very first game I'd ever import. Then I went onto buy EBA and import Ouendan 2. It's a shame we'll more than likely never seen ports for these games in the near future, but at least I got to play all three titles when they came out.
Before I start watching this I want to say: I heard the original You're the Inspiration by Chicago was not very loved, but the cover used in EBA with the story of a little girl wishing her daddy would come home like he's promised changed a lot of people's opinion of the song.
Funny how that works, huh? I always considered it as that one cheesy song in the list of songs the Time Life album commercials would pitch late at night, but this game re-contextualized it to something worth listening to.
EBA was my very first ds game and probably the first video game I played It not only shaped my music taste but also gave me a love of music and rhythm games Its funny how a silly rhythm game from the early 2000s shaped so much of who I am
Wow, this type of content is next level! Awesome job, guys. I tip my hat to Liam and all others involved. I've been checking out DYKG for a long time and it's great to see the natural evolution of your work. I loved these games as well and always wondered why no sequels came out. And now I know. :) Thanks.
The EBA level based on You're the Inspiration is actually more about the girl herself than the Agents helping her. Their dance choreography is simply them waving the arms slowly back and forth. Heck, the EBA Commander doesn't even scream Agents are GO! Like the other levels, but was watching the poor girl shuddering with a sad, quiet, "Daddy, please come home." He quietly sent the agents out and in the end, should the player not give up, the ghost of the dad comes home like he's promised even though it's obviously his soul shall soon move on. When that still image appeared of Lucy and the Mother looking up at Daddy's soul in the sky, I always say, "Rest in Peace, Loving Father"
Damn, dude... The "feels"... The feels were powerful the day I unlocked it and saw the intro... I said to myself right then and there... "I... I got to help this girl. She has to see her dad." Every time I failed that mission, I tried it again and again. The moment I finished that mission, such elation and relief knowing she got to see her dad one last time. I need to find that game again.
Still got Elite Beat Agents and I had Ouendan 2, damn just finishing the last boss on ouendan 2 on the highest difficulty just to achieve 9999999 was a great accomplishment.
fuck yeah i remember doing it and couldnt believe my 0bsession made me capable of hitting all them shits with invisible circles going on. boy did we threw time into that shit lol
Nice.. yesterday I turned on my DS for the first time in.. maybe 10 years or so.. just to play Elite Beat Agents again. For me it was THE best game on the DS. On the same day this video was posted :)
Not gonna lie, I was tearing up myself. Glad to hear the game again and getting acknowledgement. If they ever do it again. I'm buying it day 1 and that's rare coming from me.
I got EBA three years ago, and I got both of the Ouendan games earlier this year. I loved all three of them. The moment I finished Ouendan 2’s final stage, I sat quietly by myself, and then thought: “Why?? Why did these three amazing games have to flop?! Why couldn’t they have done well so that they could’ve gotten more sequels?!?!” The saddest part about this is that, despite the possibility that they _might_ have a chance at selling better today than they did back then due to their increasing following, it’s pretty clear that Nintendo has zero interest in continuing the Ouendan and EBA series now. To make matters even worse, iNiS itself has changed over the years. The company is NOTHING like it used to be. As much as I’d LOVE for there to be an EBA 2 or an Ouendan 3, we pretty much have to face the fact that we’ll never see the agents or cheerleaders ever again, and it absolutely breaks my heart. 😢
The fact that an Ouendan/EBA game was considered for the 3ds and not given life, hurts me...
It's always about the damn money and sales. It's a disgusting pill to swallow.

I loved Elite Beat Agents back in the day. I had no idea it had such a history.
This is easily one of the best researched DYKG videos I’ve seen. I love this series and I need to go and play them all again
High praise! Thank you.
I teared up watching this. Brought back so many great, moving memories of this series. "That's what the world calls love!!!"
Glad that song introduced me to Sambomaster.
Wow! Thank you for your kind words. Out of interest, which part specifically made you tear up?
Fantastic in-depth look at one of the most underappreciated DS games of all time. I can tell a lot of work and love went into this project, and it definitely shows!
Thanks very much!
This game is the reason my brother and I play You're The Inspiration during Christmas time
I played all 3 of these games back in the day and absolutely loved them all to death.
Knowing that we could have had a Ouendan 3 for the 3DS is just too heart breaking for me
Ouendan 2 is still one of my favorite games of all time and it's really important to me
I'll never know peace till EBA gets a switch remake/sequel
Never forget team Inis, "No one needs you more than I need you!"
Missing my favorite Walkie Talkie Men, here's hoping a pitch for a mobile or Switch game would turn heads in the digital market.
Thanks very much. I'm glad you liked it.
Also it didn't sell as well as they wanted
"We love you agents!"
This game's spirit, both Ouedan and EBA, helped get me through most of art school.
Makes me sad that such passionate developers arnt seeing the support they need to continue.
Just like the director I had a level make me cry. It was level 12:
a Christmas gift, with the song you are my inspiration. I was in tears when I finished that level, it was just beautiful. THANK YOU.
God I love Elite Beat Agents... I hope someday they can pick it up again.
Thanks for the real good video!
DYKG: Do you know Osu Tataken Ouendan or Elite Beat Agents.
Me: You have no idea.
love that you guys take your content so seriously cause this is some high quality stuff!
Gitaroo Man is one of those absolutely underrated Rythm Game classics.... Still love it to this day
Legendary theme will dry those fan tears.
BEAUTY IS A SIN...! OH GODDDD!
Finally a trilogy of masterpieces gets recognized
Trilogy? Aw man, I wish I knew... I thought there were only 2 games...
The dog & train level could have a good fail ending. The, "dog" was a really realistic plush and everyone just stands in shock about it all.
Always imagine if the were a anime series of Ouedan, They meet the Elite Beat Agents at some point in the series, with some gratuitous engrish
It’s a crime that we never got another EBA😢 You’ll always be close to my heart❤️
Ayyy, one of my favorite game series. Thanks for this :)
EBA was hands down my favorite DS game. I wanted a sequel so badly but never got one :(
A video about Osu and EBA? And it's 30 minutes long? Awesome! And there's also an old GDC talk about the series that I haven't listened to? Even better!
I really wish we will see the series again someday even though it seems unlikely. If it does, I'll make sure that every single one of my friends buys it too so we don't end up in this situation again.
One of my favorite series of all time. Thank you so much for this video!
This is an excellent video. It’s so thorough and well edited. I always appreciate seeing such quality content on a platform that prioritizes low effort, high volume videos. Keep up the good work!!!
Thanks very much.
Fantastic video and interviews! Such a shame we never got Ouendan 3 but it's nice to know they pitched it at least :-)
This video is actually legendary. Thank you
Best game of NDS, I was one of the guys who imported from Japan.... and I dont speak japanese.
These games (especially Ouendan 1) helped me A LOT in a difficult time of my life. Thanks to everyone involved with it.
Great video , love the longer format ..
Thanks for everything you guys do for us ..
Appreciate yah ..!
I'd play the Agents in smash for sure, imagine a rhythm based character who is relentlessly groovy.
This is a really good game on the DS, highly recommend it.
osu! on pc is better
@@grkb osu on pc is shitty bootleg
nobody plays eltire beat agents. they all play osu!. anime fanboys to just your average 7 year old on a pc.
@Andrew Crawford yes 4 different modes and three of them are ripped off from other games
this "game" was never "original" and i wonder why this became so popular and even more popular than original games when it was supposed to be only an emulator
@@speedmixcb becuase of players can make beatmaps. You can even recreate some Ouebsan/EBA maps
Every single human being I've met has never heard of EBA and it always baffled me.
Absolutely criminal that the game never got a sequel in the west. Rhythm games are more popular than ever before, they'd make absolute bank if there was a way to develop it on Switch, as it has touchscreen capability.
Elite beat agents was amazing! Randomly picked it up and I could not put it down.
I still want a high quality version of EBA's soundtrack because the Jumpin' Jack Flash cover may be better than the original.
That would be awesome.
Now I’m *very* disappointed that Livin’ La Vida Loca was cut.
Elite Beat Agents is the perfect video game.
Correct!
I absolutely love your work liam, so well researched and prepped. I dont even mind how occasional we get them, they are just that good. Your vids inspire part of my passion of gaming.
Thank you so much! Very kind of you.
Aww, that last bit was really sweet
I absoluetly adore this series and I'm heartbroken they didn't continue with it. Osu! isn't the same without the touchscreen stylus and the charm these games have
This is amongst my favorite TH-cam videos. This franchise has a huge influence on my view of games. Thank you for your work.
Thank you for your kind words. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Before I start watching this I want to say:
I heard the original You're the Inspiration by Chicago was not very loved, but the cover used in EBA with the story of a little girl wishing her daddy would come home like he's promised changed a lot of people's opinion of the song.
Funny how that works, huh? I always considered it as that one cheesy song in the list of songs the Time Life album commercials would pitch late at night, but this game re-contextualized it to something worth listening to.
EBA was my very first ds game and probably the first video game I played
It not only shaped my music taste but also gave me a love of music and rhythm games
Its funny how a silly rhythm game from the early 2000s shaped so much of who I am
An EBA on the Switch would have me saying "Shut up and take my money!"
Shame there isn't another title planned.
Wow, this type of content is next level! Awesome job, guys. I tip my hat to Liam and all others involved. I've been checking out DYKG for a long time and it's great to see the natural evolution of your work.
I loved these games as well and always wondered why no sequels came out. And now I know. :) Thanks.
Thank you very much. I'm glad you enjoyed my video!
Great video! Really well put together. :)
She has to see her dad."
Every time I failed that mission, I tried it again and again. The moment I finished that mission, such elation and relief knowing she got to see her dad one last time. I need to find that game again.
I love Elite Beat Agents. This game helped me a lot going through some tough times. Would love to see a re-release! (Copyright issues aside)
I still remember the joy I felt when I achieved the score cap in SSAY
found this game from this video and its now one of my favourite rhythm games now.
That's so great to hear. Thanks for sharing.
EBA is incredibly underrated please play it, it deserves more popularity
EBA is amazing, but the real sadness for me is the failure of Gitaroo Man and no real sequel. One of my favourite games ever T_T
Nice.. yesterday I turned on my DS for the first time in.. maybe 10 years or so.. just to play Elite Beat Agents again.
For me it was THE best game on the DS.
On the same day this video was posted :)
Not gonna lie, I was tearing up myself. Glad to hear the game again and getting acknowledgement.
If they ever do it again. I'm buying it day 1 and that's rare coming from me.
i feel like ive been waiting for an in-depth video on the ouendan series all my life omg
Yo, this was a fantastic video. I love the in depth look at EBA
Thank you!
I got EBA three years ago, and I got both of the Ouendan games earlier this year. I loved all three of them. The moment I finished Ouendan 2’s final stage, I sat quietly by myself, and then thought: “Why?? Why did these three amazing games have to flop?! Why couldn’t they have done well so that they could’ve gotten more sequels?!?!”
The saddest part about this is that, despite the possibility that they _might_ have a chance at selling better today than they did back then due to their increasing following, it’s pretty clear that Nintendo has zero interest in continuing the Ouendan and EBA series now. 😢
iNiS did not make Hexagroove.
Same...
Finally some recognition! Freakin love this game. The original osu
