I have watched many such videos, I find this to be the best for beginner and intermediate players. I have taken twelve 90-minute lessons, won 2 out of 2 intermediate tournaments at club level and I still find your videos super helpful. Thank you!
Hi Tom all you need to know in one place! Moving and moving others with basic techniques.. One of the best teaching videos I have seen. Will benefit any keen to improve. Keep them coming !
Hi Tom, Great video :) I've just started relearning TT aftter just dabbling in it for many years. Initially I was looking for a couple of bats to play with (which i bought - a Bribar All around and a winning loop based on you recomendation) but its such a cool game I decidided to try learn the basics/fundementals properly to increase my understanding and consitency. Anyways... I got a Robot (Poner Power 2001) and and a table (as COVID and club access rubbish at the moment). Your vids were the first instructional videos I found, tehy have been super useful, got me started. :) I then found Pingskills and Dublin table tennis (loking for backhand topspin video). I have now become confused about the Forehand Drive and the finish position. In Pingskills they finish by right eye brow while you finish in front of the body and lower. Why the difference in technique? I now feel like if i try to learn from different people i might start getting confused. I was using your technique then started trying to change to finish higher and as you can imagine the technique is falling appart. Lol. Any advice/clarification.
Yea yang yang better to use wireless microphone clip on near your neck with low sensitivity. Then make it louder when edit the video. I some time difficult to listen your training video
Tom I’m having a little trouble playing the forehand drive from the backhand side I keep putting them off the side of the table have you any videos on this stroke thanks John
How much wrist is needed in a forehand drive? And where should thee wrist be positioned? I always find my wrist ends up bent down and the face of my bat is too closed so I often hit the edge of the bet. I can't seem to keep the faace open and control the ball. Do I need to stiffen my wrist and just use body and a little elbow? I have a natural tendency to loop, but I want to improve my driving ability.
Seems like you are using badminton smash technique which i did too when i started. Ur wrist motion is just a sideways flick, you do not have to use your forearm muscles otherwise the rotation from them will cause your bat to be too closed.
@@nazunasapostle1stapostleof755 my coach keeps telling me to keep my face open, but i just it it sky high. Also, my beginning position has my bat dropped down too low (probably because i love to loop). How much waist and shoulders is involved? or is it mostly arm movement?
@@rwilsonuk84damn yt keeps blocking my comments cuz links /54G98gEIy00?si=ra_TNjMvo63aie5o(add this behind the https stuff in yt link cuz yt will delet my comment if it has full links) learnt mainly from this vid. So the bat should go from open to closed (not too closed until you start slicing the ball) waist and shoulders is to generate power but its still important to practise with those for a good forehand drive. The ball loops because of the topspin you impart to the ball so the wrist must be used to give the ball more top spin to loop since a drive is a high power shot.
You should try and keep a relaxed grip. It's ok to apply a little pressure as you contact the ball, but really try to keep everything (grip, wrist, elbow, shoulder) relaxed.
A fore hand shot is rightly said the main shot in the game but in a fore hand drive you can use little bit of your mussle power as well along with your rists ...🏓
Hi, take a look at this article on my website. It has lots of tips on switching between backhand and forehand www.tabletenniscoach.me.uk/5-training-drills-switching-forehand-backhand-strokes/
I don't think any video can teach me how to do this.. it looks so easy, yet when I try this the ball goes completely to the left in a 90 degree angle, completely missing the table. That is after several hours of practice. I think I will have to take some lessons, where a teacher can explain me what I'm doing wrong.
Small update - had a one hour lesson from an experienced player in Eleven VR, a great table tennis sim in VR. Helped me tremendously. So if you're struggling like I did, find a teacher who can watch what you are doing incorrectly and correct that.. in my case that was almost everything :D
@@MrEDET that's wonderful to hear! You never know, when you reply to years old comments, but I'm very happy to hear it. I'm literally writing this while hosting at our local club, and everyone else is happy to hear it too. Going to have to check out that VR sim you mentioned!
@@FLUFFYCAT_PNW Ah how cool to hear that! Definately check it out, lots of videos on youtube demonstrating it. The physics are fantastic, it almost like playing in real life. I use a paddle adapter for my controller which makes it feel and hold like a real paddle. Recently started to play golf in vr, also with a golfclub adapter. It's crazy how good sport like these feel in vr. Say hi to the club! :)
I would say that your action is somewhat restricted: the arm seems a little stiff, the backswing is short, the end position is not really in front of your body. Also, during the footwork drills, one can see that your hips don't do as much action as in the static drills and the arm is doing most of the work. The action in fact resembles a "block" more than a "drive", perhaps because your sparring partner in the video is imparting a lot of speed on the ball. th-cam.com/video/xsg4M6fOObI/w-d-xo.html Let's compare with Ma Long: his action looks more fluid. I believe he does the typical "relax-explode-relax" technique. His backswing is bigger. His arm ends perfectly in front of his body. His hips are not doing as much work as when he topspins but still there is more an appearance of the arm being brought into motion by the inertia of the hip rotation.
Hi Dieter Yes, good observation. I agree, my stroke is a little short on this video. My partner is injecting more pace with her drives and I'm focusing on keeping the drill going, rather than finishing the point. If I was playing a match and trying to win a point, I would certainly use more backswing and more follow through, to play a more aggressive drive shot. And thanks for link to Ma Long video. Inspirational stuff! Tom

It is all about how much topspin and force you can impart on the ball by adjusting your final position. Do what you are comfortable at.
thanks man...this helped
Great video, thanks for making this 😊
Thanks for the video my son is learning👍
very good coaching video.

Agreed. The room was repainted grey a couple of years ago, so now much nicer to play in.

You're hitting the ball either too soon or too late in the stroke if it's going left or right.
Hope you're still playing and having a ton of fun 🎉🎉

Why forehand so difficult for me
Oke
The ping pong ball be like: Ow. Shit. Oof. Ow. Plea- OW.
any reason why you have an upside down cross behind you???

ask you to remove the cross in the center of the wall
