Love the videos Paul, you're the main reason I decided to pull the trigger and actually buy a Model A after thinking about it for about 10 years. I'm a mechanical engineer but was still doubtful that I could keep up with maintenance and repair on a 90-year-old car but you break it down into understandable bits of information that can be very useful when trouble strikes LOL. Also, as an amateur video editor, I understand the tremendous work that goes into filming takes and editing the video into something cohesive... It's an awful lot of work and you do a great job!

I have a 1930 Tudor Sedan I restored under the supervision of a friend and experienced restorer when I was in high school. This was back in the 70s and needless to say the car needs a refresh now. Am hopeful to put the car back in daily driver condition. Techniques and restoration advice have changed some since then. I want to stay all original though it’s not always easy to find good advice as the experienced people I had back then are not with us today. Thank you so much for these videos, they are a great help.

@@AstraWerke I have both types on various cars. I know some argue that a full flow is bad because of the filter gets clogged up, then the bearings won't get oil. I change my oil so much, I don't even worry about it.
Paul, $40k isn't too bad considering the level of restoration you've done on your Tudor Sedan. Restoration isn't cheap on any sort of classic vehicle nowadays, more-so if you're restoring to factory original or as close as possible. Great video!
One of the great aspects of this particular model, is that it can be a pay as you can project. Save a bit up front, and make up the difference in years to come with parts and labor... I mean "love", not labor.

With every video I'm convinced more and more that this is a a hobby I can learn, this is a car I could maintain and keep up with forever, until it's time to pass it on to the next generation. I'm inspired by "Pop's", there for whom the Model A is the first and last word in his passion for automobiles.

@@alexiskai Thank you. I ended up doing my own research. The T-5 seems to usually be the Borg-Warner unit heard about from time to time. And you are correct, that unit does require the elimination of the torque-tube. I don't know why anyone would want to do that as Bob and Paul state that basically it weakens the structure of the car. However, the Mitchell Synchronized Model-A Transmission, does not eliminate the torque-tube because it uses a Model A transmission housing, so the difference is only on the inside.
I watched your first video and smiled all the way through. I was given my dad’s ‘31 coup at 16. Restored it in high school and drove it to work when I was a flight instructor. Question, Watching you crank start it it looked like your thumb was wrapped around the crank. I was taught to wrap my fingers around the crank but not my thumb. If it kicked back the crank will slip out of your hand and not break your wrist.
Enjoyed the video. I am a boomer too and for some reason always loved to talk to the older folks. I friend like Bob for sure is priceless. When you talked about why Model A and Bob stated first car, that holds true for many of us. I love all kinds of cars but never have had a model A or T. I am deep into Corvairs and they are similar to the A's in respect to not expensive, many folks first car, many stories, available parts, can't just have one and have great clubs just like it sounds like the A club. Had that slapped out of me while getting my pilot's license. Gear heads leave the dot (or point, or whatever) out at least around here. 373's, 411's, etc. will get you by in any pit. As a child, I can remember each winter riding in my father’s model A “Snow Bird”. The term Snow Bird was used but I’m not sure if that was the proper name for the conversion or a pet name given by my father. For those not familiar, this was a kit converting the A into a half track vehicle. The conversion was targeted towards traveling on snow plugged roads. He used it for just that purpose as our family house and dairy milking barn were separated by a mile. My most vivid memories - How steeply it would pitch up and down and side to side while climbing over large snow drifts. I always being fearful that it was going to tip over. The headlights were like two candles in the dark night and wind driven blowing snow. Any meager cabin heat was provided through a hole in the firewall. 🥶

A fantastic podcast video Paul, of course the star was Bob. He is a great man that reminds me of old Bob Eads who recently passed away at 93. He too knew all about Modle A's and all engines from the hit and miss up to the heavy ship engines. Currently my better half and I are looking at a 31 slant sedan, if we get it we will get a driver of an older restoration. We live in a small town with low speed limits and would use it as our summertime good weather driver. Thank you for your wonderful podcasts. My favorite in your collection is Tina's 29 sedan.
I use to know a fellow in Napa Calif. that had a 1929 model A roadster pickup. He said the 4 cylinder block was from a 1934 Ford. It had a Christie OHV cylinder head on it, a tube header, dual Chandler Groves 2 barrel carbs and a Mallory dual point distributor. The Christie cylinder was made in San Francisco if I remember correctly. I believe the trans was from a 39 Ford. I don't remember what the rear end was. I only rode in it once, but it was impressive to say the least. He built the pickup in the late 1950's or early 1960's while in school. He still owned it up til about 10 years ago when he was killed in a stupid accident. He was also ran a business for old Ford, Studebaker and Packard parts. His name was Steve W. -----Last name left out due to respect.
I just acquired my dads model A. He got it in the late 60’s. It’s real rough but I’m going to fix it. I may document it on youtube. It was last run in the late 70’s when I was a teenager. It’s been stored in a cow barn for the past 25 years. Not a good place for a car for sure. I will be watching your vids as I go for sure.
@@ModelA while "rumble seats" are only recommended for slow traffic, parades, etc, "mother in law" seats are Mitchell Overdrive Endorsed for 65mph... Especially on bumpy backroads.
My oldest son, grown daughter, and I were talking about rumble seats. I mentioned I bought the phaeton and seat belts so the grandkids were safe in the back seat. My son said "Yea but when we were young you and mom just threw us in the rumble seat and didn't worry!" Without thinking I replied. "But I love the grandkids."

I see Bob was on the USS Johnston (DD-821). My Dad was in the Navy and was also in the Mediterranean and Atlantic fleets. He was on the Pawcatuck (Oiler) and Canberra (CAG-2) around that time in the late 50's and early 60's. I forgot the exact dates he was on the two. Maybe they blockaded Cuba together and some point or were in the same task force. My Dad passed away last August, so I can't get anymore details for you. Great videos. I want to purchase my first Model A next spring. I live in Reno, and I see there is a Carson Model A club I'll reach out to. Hi I have A model A4door 1929 Unrestored it last ran in the 1960 about i got 4 new tires form Coker tire in the back set 10 years ago it should run i will need to change all fluids before I start it. THANK YOU for your Utubs Doug.
Turn signals are almost a necessity because most other motorists today have no idea what the hand signals mean. I recently made a right turn and used the hand signal for the right turn and someone thought I was waving at them and promptly waved back!
I bought a 28 AR in 1955 from the original owner that bought it new He was the first Ford Machanic Here .The car is a roadster still had the original spare tire I am 90 so had to sell it to a neighbour My other A is a local car 1930 A for dor murry body I spent 20,000 did allthe work And it is like new l had the engine done in Calgary But I think they did the bearings on the crank to tight as it quits after I drive 300 yards Can I tow it for a few miles to break it in .

Really well done Paul and Bob Hey Bob - has there ever been a postage stamp set commemorating the Model A? I’ve seen Henry Ford and Model T stamps but don’t recall seeing our great cars on a stamp .....
I'm a lot older than you but younger than your Dad (I learned to drive in my "A"). My kids are grown and I am going to get my "A" back on the road. I took it off for a blown head gasket in 1988. It has been in the garage ever since. What sources do you recommend (parts, tools, .catalogs, websites,......) that may have become mainstream Model A while my "A" has been sleeping. You both mentioned a timing tool I have never heard of for example. I am not a "Kit A" kinda guy but think it is bad to be one. I am only interested in original Ford parts whenever possible and am willing to restore an original part before purchasing a part not made in America (if at all possible).
At some point I'd really like to have a tour of that engine shop and his extensive parts collection. I feel that would be very interesting for the viewers....
I enjoyed this Video very much, especially some of the answers! I do have one remark to a statement you made about checking the King Pins! When I bought my car, Fordor Blindback, I discovered the drivers side King Pin APPEARED to be worn! I bought the car anyway BECAUSE I wanted a Blindback. When I disassembled it I found the Axle had an OBLONG King Pin hole. I replaced the axle and everything was good. This was done 18+ years ago BUT now I have the same problem! I had a spare axle which I was saving "just in case" ONLY to find that the Drivers Side on that one was OBLONGE! My question is how can a guy be so LUCKY to have THREE BAD AXLES although the REAL question is "what is going on with this"? AND what are your thoughts of it just happening to the DRIVERS side? Again, a very enjoyable Video and am looking foward to the next one!
@@joeg3296 Yes. There is a bushing that goes in the hole at the end of the axle that the kingpin fits into somewhat snugly. Does your axle not have them? Perhaps they wore through and into the axle?

As a child, I can remember each winter riding in my father’s model A “Snow Bird”. The term Snow Bird was used but I’m not sure if that was the proper name for the conversion or a pet name given by my father. For those not familiar, this was a kit converting the A into a half track vehicle. The conversion was targeted towards traveling on snow plugged roads. He used it for just that purpose as our family house and dairy milking barn were separated by a mile. My most vivid memories - How steeply it would pitch up and down and side to side while climbing over large snow drifts. I always being fearful that it was going to tip over. The headlights were like two candles in the dark night and wind driven blowing snow. Any meager cabin heat was provided through a hole in the firewall. 🥶

A fantastic podcast video Paul, of course the star was Bob. He is a great man that reminds me of old Bob Eads who recently passed away at 93. He too knew all about Modle A's and all engines from the hit and miss up to the heavy ship engines. Currently my better half and I are looking at a 31 slant sedan, if we get it we will get a driver of an older restoration. We live in a small town with low speed limits and would use it as our summertime good weather driver. Thank you for your wonderful podcasts. My favorite in your collection is Tina's 29 sedan.

I use to know a fellow in Napa Calif. that had a 1929 model A roadster pickup. He said the 4 cylinder block was from a 1934 Ford. It had a Christie OHV cylinder head on it, a tube header, dual Chandler Groves 2 barrel carbs and a Mallory dual point distributor. The Christie cylinder was made in San Francisco if I remember correctly. I believe the trans was from a 39 Ford. I don't remember what the rear end was. I only rode in it once, but it was impressive to say the least. He built the pickup in the late 1950's or early 1960's while in school. He still owned it up til about 10 years ago when he was killed in a stupid accident. He was also ran a business for old Ford, Studebaker and Packard parts. His name was Steve W. -----Last name left out due to respect.
I just acquired my dads model A. He got it in the late 60’s. It’s real rough but I’m going to fix it. I may document it on youtube. It was last run in the late 70’s when I was a teenager. It’s been stored in a cow barn for the past 25 years. Not a good place for a car for sure. I will be watching your vids as I go for sure.

@@ModelA while "rumble seats" are only recommended for slow traffic, parades, etc, "mother in law" seats are Mitchell Overdrive Endorsed for 65mph... Especially on bumpy backroads.
My oldest son, grown daughter, and I were talking about rumble seats. I mentioned I bought the phaeton and seat belts so the grandkids were safe in the back seat.
My son said "Yea but when we were young you and mom just threw us in the rumble seat and didn't worry!"
Without thinking I replied. "But I love the grandkids."

I see Bob was on the USS Johnston (DD-821). My Dad was in the Navy and was also in the Mediterranean and Atlantic fleets. He was on the Pawcatuck (Oiler) and Canberra (CAG-2) around that time in the late 50's and early 60's. I forgot the exact dates he was on the two. Maybe they blockaded Cuba together and some point or were in the same task force. My Dad passed away last August, so I can't get anymore details for you. Great videos. I want to purchase my first Model A next spring. I live in Reno, and I see there is a Carson Model A club I'll reach out to. I'll be down in your area tomorrow on my Harley touring Angels Camp and Murphy's.

Turn signals are almost a necessity because most other motorists today have no idea what the hand signals mean. I recently made a right turn and used the hand signal for the right turn and someone thought I was waving at them and promptly waved back!

I bought a 28 AR in 1955 from the original owner that bought it new He was the first Ford Machanic Here .The car is a roadster still had the original spare tire I am 90 so had to sell it to a neighbour My other A is a local car 1930 A for dor murry body I spent 20,000 did allthe work And it is like new l had the engine done in Calgary But I think they did the bearings on the crank to tight as it quits after I drive 300 yards Can I tow it for a few miles to break it in .

I'm a lot older than you but younger than your Dad (I learned to drive in my "A"). My kids are grown and I am going to get my "A" back on the road. I took it off for a blown head gasket in 1988. It has been in the garage ever since. What sources do you recommend (parts, tools, .catalogs, websites,......) that may have become mainstream Model A while my "A" has been sleeping. You both mentioned a timing tool I have never heard of for example. I am not a "Kit A" kinda guy but think it is bad to be one. I am only interested in original Ford parts whenever possible and am willing to restore an original part before purchasing a part not made in America (if at all possible).
At some point I'd really like to have a tour of that engine shop and his extensive parts collection. I feel that would be very interesting for the viewers....

I enjoyed this Video very much, especially some of the answers! I do have one remark to a statement you made about checking the King Pins! When I bought my car, Fordor Blindback, I discovered the drivers side King Pin APPEARED to be worn! I bought the car anyway BECAUSE I wanted a Blindback. When I disassembled it I found the Axle had an OBLONG King Pin hole. I replaced the axle and everything was good. This was done 18+ years ago BUT now I have the same problem! I had a spare axle which I was saving "just in case" ONLY to find that the Drivers Side on that one was OBLONGE! My question is how can a guy be so LUCKY to have THREE BAD AXLES although the REAL question is "what is going on with this"? AND what are your thoughts of it just happening to the DRIVERS side? Again, a very enjoyable Video and am looking foward to the next one!
Something is amiss there. O bushings in it? There should be bushings where the king pins go.

@@joeg3296 Yes. There is a bushing that goes in the hole at the end of the axle that the kingpin fits into somewhat snugly. Does your axle not have them? Perhaps they wore through and into the axle?

Jay Leno has a magnet turn signal wirelessly as he has zillion cars. My driver is a 2002. 1500$voyager 4cyl 40mpg 350$ repairs 3yrs only one ride in a A for me . had a gasoline heater caught fire
I was told by the old timers at least fifty years ago that “rumble seat” referred to the exhaust rumble.
