  • In this video, we explore the fascinating origins of the decline of the Ryukyu Kingdom's (present-day Okinawa) trade dominance in East and Southeast Asia. From the 14th to 16th century, the ancient kingdom of Chuzan came to rule over the fragmented principalities of the Ryukyu archipelago, uniting the islands into a mighty and prosperous kingdom. Through an alliance with the Chinese Ming dynasty, commerce flourished under the Sho dynasty, sending ships as far as Korea and Japan in East Asia and Thailand and Sumatra in Southeast Asia. Please join on this fascinating journey into the distant past to explore how a small island kingdom came to dominate trade between East and Southeast Asia.
