  • Comparative Tests On A Human And A Chimpanzee Infant Of Approximately The Same Age, Pt 2 (1932)
    Compares the reactions of a normal human infant between the ages of 10 and 14.5 months to psychological tests, and the responses of a chimpanzee companion, age 7.5 to 12 months, to the same tests. Brings out the effects of different rates of growth and learning abilities and illustrates the capacity of the animal to outdo the child in many tests. Includes hand preference, startle reaction time, delayed reaction, cap-on-head, detour, tickle, ice and rotation tests.

    People feel sorry for the chimp, but imagine what things were like for the human baby as well. Being a specimen in a study like that. That boy was constantly evaluated and tested instead of accepted and protected. He grew up to be a high achiever, waited for his parents to die and commited suicide. You can read it up on Wikipedia.

      I don't normally like replying to comments that are so old, but... I want to gently emphasize that people commit suicide for a great many reasons. The only person who can tell us why Donald committed suicide is Donald. One does not need to be raised along side an ape to have problems. Please. People with depression are not inherently broken because of matters of raising.
      Additionally, when I search for information about this topic, I find two types of writings: The first are texts about what happened, the details and the situation. The second is people being outraged and angry about what happened.
      The outrage and anger is understandable--very few of us would consider taking a wild creature from it's home and raising it as a human along side another child. It seems like a very ethically dubious thing to do. However, when people are angry, they are prone to exaggerate. They're prone to stretch the truth.
      And, this isn't a circumstance of one person telling a giant lie to deceive the world, not usually. Not for stuff like this. It's one person says something like "and how much would that fuck a person up? Donald killed himself later, you know?" and someone then says "Donald was really fucked up as an adult and killed himself." and someone else says "This Donald killed himself because of this thing that happened "
      It's a big game of telephone. We just don't know what happened. and while theres no doubt that this was ethically kinda fucked up, its not fair to say "and this is why"

      @@jenetikitty What you say is very important and I completely agree. Noone knows, why he committed suicide, and it is usually not because of “one reason”. Even more, for most people, suicidality is only a short period of time which would pass, which makes fulfilled suicides all the more tragic. Reports from “Brooklyn Bridge survivors” are an example of this. Still, I think great caution is advised when performing experiments on children. Don’t get me wrong, I think with today’s experiments in 99,9% of the cases, no harm is being done to the kids and the research can help a lot of people. But this is different in that the researchers were also the parents, and the boy did not participate in a study and then go home, the study was his life. I think that might hold some great risks for a parent-child relationship and healthy development.

    I read that when the experimentation was complete they shipped the chimp off to a lab where it developed pneumonia and died within a year. The scientists/parents of the child spent the majority of their time abroad leaving their child behind. They both died in either a plane or a car wreck and their son later wound up taking his own life.

I had read in the comments that the parents both died in an accident or something along the line of dying the same year as the other parent (later when the child was an adult) and shortly thereafter the adult child committed suicide. I researched for some time and the only thing I could find was that he did in fact die shortly after his parents, but could not find any confirmation on cause of death. The chimpanzee was given to some lab once testing ceased with her human "brother" and she died within 2years of complications from lung infection/flu. Very sad outcome for everyone in my opinion, but then again I've always been told I'm to empathetic and a "bleeding heart".

      punishment although bad is necessary for learning and training. Some punishments like slapping, yelling, or scolding are too extreme and should not be used and are ineffective. Others like getting an item/toy taken away, childproofing objects, time out, or letting them face the consequences of their actions, helps them with learning right from wrong and allows them to learn useful things. • @DanaTS
      @DanaTS 8 ปีที่แล้ว +52

      +Sheldon Helms ...I know your post is quite old, but thought I would respond anyway. The study is quite infamous actually (for the tragic lives of the two participants, Donald and Gua, who came from the original Yerkes Primate Center), but it was essentially about human verses chimpanzee developmental rates and nurture's impact on humanization (Kellogg was especially interested in teaching an Ape language, apparently not understanding that Chimps lack the vocal structures and brain structures necessary for human speech). The researchers (the child's parents, sadly) raised them as twins. What they did not anticipate is that instead of what they wanted the Chimp to do, the opposite happened, the child (Donald) would pick up chimpanzee traits as well, including vocalizations (which I have read delayed his language development and they found quite disturbing). He also picked up other Chimp behaviors, including biting and reverting to crawling like a Chimp, rather than walking.
      Because of this, they ended the study very early and underestimated the impact this would have on the two participants. The chimpanzee, Gua, failed to ever thrive once she was back at Yerkes and died as a young infant (I believe I recall she died of pneumonia less than a year after being separated from the only family she knew, the Kelloggs and her human brother, Donald). The child, Donald, likewise was now developmentally delayed and very depressed for many years and finally committed suicide many years later. This "study" is part of what ended these "apes as part of the family" type of studies. What Kellogg ultimately discovered was the opposite of his hypothesis, the human child was more easily made Chimp-like or like a feral child (what interested him in the first place), than the Chimp was made human-like (although she did beat Donald at several tasks and learned things much quicker in the first months of the study). Very sad story all around.

When their blood thirst was fulfilled in most fearsome war of human history, only then they started understanding how a society works, and most importantly, how to curb your boiling blood for even minor quibbles. The overtly selfish nature of this 1930's generation was main reason for two world wars and good thing both sides killed hefty amount of degenerates of that time. And the rest took their lesson and now we have the most progressive, peaceful and paradise society with prosperity, no matter how much people cry nowadays. The new generations, especially Gen Z's, can't even survive two days in 1930's. Not because they are weak but the awerul morals and ethics would make them believe they are in a place worst than hell

      The human kid committed suicide later in life and his parents said they regretted the whole experiment because of how he was treated both as a child and as an adult. The chimp herself was evicted from the home after only 9 months and died a year later from a comprised immune system. This was never worth it even during this time.

      @@Bestiola Utilitarianism is the belief that the sole standard of morality is determined by its usefulness or utility.
      There are a number of problems with utilitarianism. It leads to an “end justifies the means” mentality. If any worthwhile end can justify the means to attain it, a true ethical foundation is lost.
      The ends never justify the means if those means involve being dishonest or harmful to others, period.
