- Waitomo District Council is $40 million in debt and has raised rates to be the highest in the country to try and meet infrastructure costs. The impact on small towns like Te Kuiti and Waitomo Village has been immense with residents still suffering Covid related unemployment and economic downturn. Residents Michelle Wi and Katrina Winn are trying to help by establishing a community garden, and setting up a petition. Land manager Charles Tutahi speaks out about the impact of rising rates on farmers, and Deputy Mayor John Robertson defends the stance of the Council.

The 6 council members may need to be investigated . Follow the money trail the numbers won't lie .
Councillors enjoying their nice salaries and lining up property's by seizing land under unpaid outstanding rates bills.
Bloody pathetically ridiculously disappointing🤬
Shame on you Council
Good on you Michelle ❤
Napier is in the same boat the Napier city Council have increased the rates and angered the residents of Napier. Now the Napier council are going to build a new library and that's not gone down well especially after Gabrielle and the recent weather damage.
I wouldn't pay rates if I lived their.
Why should the community pay for the Councils spending and incompetents.
Council don't pay rates.
The whole town should stop paying rates
$76 per week ($4000 per year) for rates! Ouch!
Makes your blood boil . Like to see there salaries 😡
$40 million dollar in debt heck someone not sticking to the budget...
Make some kiwi slang signs and sell them on trademe, cher brah, go on owe ...etc il buy one just a thought...
When the council borrowed money, it would of come with a contract. Who did they borrow money from? Because during covid there was a payment packages for businesses. Yes you had to tighten down ( wage/salary workers) but a saw mill, tourist attractions? A thought...
It's shambles should see how much the lines company charges it's been like that for years when they can't even fix their road from Tk to piopio
There's a quote by king Solomon in the bible. " For the rich shall rule the poor, the borrower will become a servant to the lender" The kaunihera borrowed the money and are responsible to pay the lender" eg: bank
Nicely said 😁❤
@@tauiraclay4235 you're nice 😍
Its not the rates payers fault that council are in debt. That doesn't seem fair. They need to look into why that debt is so much .
Te Kuiti has some of the most fertile soil in the country it should be the food growing capital of NZ. Ngati Maniapoto should be stepping up for our people come on if your annual profits are just below 2% then your not using our land or trusts wisely..
There is a quote that says "owe no one no debt". The kaunihera and there sizable pay are responsible for their debt not offload it to the community.
Reduce councillors and there pays
Professor Zucman is one of the world's top experts on the accumulation, distribution, and taxation of global income and wealth.
He is professor of economics at the Paris School of Economics and the founding director of the EU Tax Observatory.
This person has ideas about evening out the tax burden.
Blimming crooked council. I wonder if those counsellors have a wage freeze?
Sounds like straight out Gentrification, period.
We are all getting F'd, not about race, just money.
May be the council could buy property in Auckland. Land bank it and sell it in 5 years.
The debt based economy is a serious issue. Currently the cost debt higher. But the main issue links the amount debt needed to finance activities. This can be linked to changes in the 1980s. A report from the roading contractors association pointed out that from the 1930s to about 1970 lots infusrtucture was built and it was built for a growing population but since this time it has not been built and now useful life is an issue.
They need a pay cut!
Does the current PM or ACT leader have time help them out?
Why .council should stop grandson things.
Can’t pay your rates the council just put there hands in your bank account and put it in debt then you go into overdraft then the bank take your house off you…
Might have to go home, get on the council 😅😂. Serve the rohe.😅😂🎉
This is ethnocentrism at its most. Sue them for pretending you have to believe in what they done for you. Once again they are pretending inaccurate ideas , have a look at their accounts. See what they are spending the money on.. You are allowed to. You are the rate payer. They are a very rude and arrogant people, l tell you now. Sue these rude, think you own the land people, to tell us how you spend our money. Before we pay any rates. Especially, look at what your rates have done for your land
U can vote those usless councilors out don't put up with them make them take a pay cut
He was choking when it came to talking about their salary. Oh it’s not us setting this…….but u get what u voted for😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Borrowed money maybe from the bank
Designed to rate you off your land
Goal make people lose homes an land throught rates , that how maori land was taken, an then sell to people from over seas, to out vote indigenous
To pay rates people can grant councils a charging order on their property I think.
Borrowed money maybe from the bank
