    Literally everyone is getting smaller bikes to ride the BDRs… Dirt Chimps, hold my beer… let’s go big! Amazing

      @DirtChimps  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, I know, right? I just really don't like the road sections on smaller bikes. I mean, getting to Oregon's southern end is two decent days on road and I am just not into that on a single cylinder. The 790 is not bad, well it kinda is, but it's so great off road. It the GS/GSA can do it all, and just require a little extra skill, I'll give it a try. Hey, our struggles are what make the videos interesting.
      I am really not sure about the little front tire though.
      Thanks for the note.

      Me too! The only challenge I have is that I want to go on big trips. Minimum 2 days! I guess I had better book off more time! Next trip is looking like Thursday / Friday / Saturday to Clearwater BC. Looking for tracks and suggestions!

    When the Oilhead came out Europeans were putting TKC's on and a Touratech raised front fender to clear knobbies/mud. Gen 2 got a raised front fender, but still not great in mud.
    The Waterhead Rallye got a little geometry change for sand in Oz.
    BMW came out with a gold lifetime chain not long ago.
    The million mile club are doing 10k km and 100km of sand rides?
    Is the big GS that much better than the 850 for long trips ??

    Potassium and sodium work together, don't take one without the other. Like your vids, hoping to hit some BDR's in the next year or so.

    Awesome ride man! Great memories of a ride I did 2 years ago. Pemberton north to Bralorne and then east to Lilooet. 15:53 I rode down to this very spot and stopped for a break! Haha. I remember there being a lot of fallen rock on that stretch of road. Unfortunately that was the year of really bad fires so visibility was greatly reduced. Need to get my butt in gear and get over to the mainland for a big ride before the summer is out.

    • @DirtChimps
      @DirtChimps  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depends on elevation, as we have a lot of variety. April for low stuff to start. High elevation does not open up until July. High elevation gets dodgy in September, but low stuff is open into November if we are lucky. After than, we snowbike!
      I hope this helps.
      Where you at?

      @@DirtChimps I’m in Nor Cal. During my dirt bike riding days, we rode MAINLY during winter. Lower Mendocino National forest area is great. Summertime we would occasionally spend the night in the bed of truck, wake up early and ride a big loop before lunch, then pack it in before it hit triple digits. I’m REALLY pondering the idea of trading my RT for a GSA to enjoy some dirt adventures once again. The itch never goes away.

    Congrats to the new bike.
    The BMW shaft drive is prone to water ingress and building up rust at the lower length compensator spline causing the bearings to rip off. Currently there is an active recall, an iffy one in my opinion, for this problem. The dealer does a vibration test of the shaft drive and adds a drain valve to the shaft housing. Your's should already have that from the factory.
    In the near future make sure you remove the shaft drive and lube up the upper and lower splines and add loads of sealant to the mating surfaces of the rubber boots and shaft housing since you tend to cross one or two fords. This job is usually not performed during the dealership maintenance procedure, if you are lucky, they do the rear one.
    If you already have the shaft drive out, you can treat the bare metal for the drain valve with some paint. The valves tend to fall inside the shaft housing. To prevent that you can put a snug fitting rubber o-ring around the valve and cover it with vulcanisation paste.
    BMW recommends Castrol Molub-Alloy Paste TA (part# 18 21 9 062 599) for the splines and Klüber Staburags NBU 30 PTM (part# 07 55 9 056 992) for the mating surfaces of the rubber boots. The Klüber stuff is usually very expensive, marine grease should do the job just as well.
    Greetings from Germany.
    Edit: If you need the factory workshop manual pdf, I can send you an email

    Dude! Next time you're stopping in Salmon Arm for a meal ping me! Looked like a fun ride, perfect for the GS. As much as I like my 890, I think the GS is such a great swiss army knife of a motorcycle. Want to haul a bunch of gear to an out of the way place? No problem! Want to peel off the luggage and go embarrass spot bikes on Silver Creek road? Yep, give'er! Want to put the missus on the back and do some "Visa camping" through the Kootenays for 4-5 days? Perfect! I had one in my garage for 15 years, your videos are making me miss it!

      Thanks for the note David! My boots are getting itchy so I hit the road again tomorrow for another 72 hours of adventure. I will be zooming by your zone but one of the beauties of going solo is that there is no coordination of schedule or plans. :) I do like that little restaurant downtown. I forget the name but will likely hit it again. A little veggie place. Cheers!

    Great video! Can I ask you a question about your helmet. I’m looking for a new one and I’m stuck between the Klim Krios Pro and the XD4 your wearing. Can I ask what pulled you toward the XD4? I had the standard Klim Krio (standard not pro) and it cracked fairly easy when I dropped it on pavement. Completely my fault but still frustrating.

      The fit was the tipping point. It fits my melon well. I do not like it off road in the woods though as the visor is rather low and I have bonked my head pretty hard a couple of times on suspended logs that I never even saw!

    Thanks for the ride, nice bike for that trip, are you taking this bike on your ID/OR/WA BDR trip? Should be fascinating to hear your objective findings, maybe we'll see you on route if our dates coincide. I'm not a BMW fan, I've rented a few RTs ( ☹) and a GS (🙂), bigger bikes just don't make sense to me on bigger terrain but hey we're so privileged to have the freedom and luxury of choice, go for it!

    • @DirtChimps
      @DirtChimps  ปีที่แล้ว

      We shall see! Our BDR plans may have been thwarted for this year given logistics and injuries. We have 3 more 72 hours of adventure planned though.
      This GSA may be a bit portly after all. I will have my fun with it and then perhaps trade it in for a 1300 GS Rallye next spring. We'll see! I may also look more seriously at the 21" front tire, or save that for the new bike.
