Please correct me if I am wrong but sometimes uptalk is a must just before a comma. What about this sentence...
" As long as he comes back from his trip on time, he will go to the meeting."
After the word "time" I personally would add an up-intonation just to indicate that I will add more information.
English is not my mother tongue though.

      stephen tang,
The second choice, (#2), is correct . . . without any of the Commas to be sure that it was punctuated correctly when the sentence was written rather than spoken. Commas shouldn't be used in writing to indicate pauses when speaking.

I'm also not a native speaker, and I also get the trouble like you. But my thought a little different. You know, many others speak English over the world like Korea, Singapore, India and so on. We learn English to communicate with many people on the world, not just UK or US, so I always try to listen and understand many people speaking English from many countries, I think that is better than just listen the standard English. But I also learn the way to speak English accurated. Thank you all for reading my comment!

“Uptalk,” as you call it, is not incorrect. It is original English pronunciation from when the US was founded. Out of fashion, perhaps, but not incorrect. Irish and Scots Gaelic speakers also speak this way in English. It merely is a regional dialect/pronunciation, and is no more incorrect than someone from Boston pronouncing it ‘BAAS-ton’ instead of ‘Boss-TON.’

@@Examhuntacademy Let me tell you. For the teachers in real school settings or professors in universities, and if you are their student, then normally you shouldn't call their first name. But there will be some exceptions. The best way is to observe how they are usually called by other people at the same place! For teachers in more casual settings, such as online teachers, individual tutors, volunteer teachers, day care teachers, etc, usually people including students will just call their name because even though they're teaching, but you're not in a serious student-teacher relationship. I'm an international student in the US! This is what I've learned. Hope this helps!

Shekhar Chhimwal The same. In China it’s not Ok to call a teacher’s full name in front of them. Maybe some students will do so when they are gossiping with their friends in private, but never in front of the teacher. And when a teacher or someone above you comes to talk to you, sometimes people will stand up... just to show respect to the hierarchy.

Don’t speak like an American, this video is like telling someone :
“don’t speak Brazilian Portuguese, it sounds so unprofessional, rather, speak the Portuguese from Portugal, you’ll get a raise.”
Every country has a different accent and a different culture that goes with it. Come to America and you’ll see that today in age, people don’t care how you speak, they care about if you can you get the job done? Yes or no?
Yea, sometimes uptalk is annoying, but it’s mostly regional and it’s cultural, not all Americans speak this way. And a lot of them that do are successful and happy.
I realize you teach people professional English, so I understand this video, but nowadays, there are so many young entrepreneurs who are killing it and these rules simply don’t apply the way they used in the past.
Sorry for the rant, but this video paints the picture in foreigners’ minds that Americans who speak this way are idiots who are immature and lacking in education. Sadly, that couldn’t be further from the truth. But this video would convince people who have never been to the states otherwise 😞

So he completely breaks this silly rule about don’t speak like Americans with this uptalk.
People who come here with this impression are going to be completely shocked with they see this is no longer the norm anymore but instead, it’s the opposite of what is being taught in this video.
But hey, to each his own, I guess.

One thing I am getting clear is that among varied factors influencing a good language, the concept of Intonation plays a key function in deciding our effective communication and maintaining good relationship. It's more of psychological in nature, as the right awareness on intonation enables our understandings to identify the emotions displayed by the speakers. Maybe, Intonation is a true reflection of one's mental state. As rightly said by the teacher, we need to be careful whom we imitate. I do make a note of it Ma'am and I am immensely thankful to the Teacher for the worthy training. Great. (Ravi)

Rising intonation is only used for "yes" or "no" questions. For example, "What time was it when you left?" No rising tone for that kind of question.

    • @funnyman613
      @funnyman613 3 ปีที่แล้ว

You can use rising intonation in English for just about any question, it won't show a lack of confidence or anything and its generally acceptable to do so. Even the question you posed, the rise in intonation isn't as dramatic as others, but its still present. It is possible to deliberately neglect rise in intonation in questions, yes or no questions as well, because it can still be clear it's a question as long as subject-verb inversion is used. When you are saying your example question to yourself, I suspect you are subconsciously neglecting to rise in intonation. Which isn't wrong either, it's still clear and correct.
An example I can give of a yes or no question to illustrate my point is, "Is it raining outside?" You could say it similar to "Is it raining outside." and its still clearly a question because the sentence begins with the verb immediately followed by the subject.

Mam please tell me when I hear you and other English teachers on TH-cam I understand everything pretty clearly without subtitles but when I come across other native TH-camrs I fell like taking the help of subtitles . Why this happens to me ? Thanks for your incredible service . Loads of love from India.

Hi Aryan, English teachers make an effort to speak more clearly. Young TH-camrs often speak fast and use a lot of slang. You will also notice that it's easier to understand college professors or documentaries in English. They are teaching something, so they use a clearer speaking style. I am sure the same can be seen in your native language. Your ability to understand native speakers will improve with time. Don't give up!

You either ARE professional and/or intelligent or you're not. Creating the appearance of something is disingenuous and it will show.

Agree, but having control over certain aspects of your performance might be helpful. The way we speak has an impact on how others perceive us as well as let's say clothes. You wouldn't wear wrinkled clothes to a meeting with a client, it'd be unprofessional although your business has nothing to do with fashion or clothes. People see you as a whole package and such little things might undermine your otherwise profound knowledge and expertise. You can't fake intelligence but you can definitely conceal it by making a wrong first impression, which is, unfortunately, very important.

Nope you missed her point, she's teaching this to people who natively speak a language other than English in which they have the rising intonation as a normal way of speaking and making statements.

This is the average American English accent while normally spoken by youngsters and uneducated, nonprofessional, or immature people. It'll be proper or not depending on the social status you belong to or the academic or working settings you have to get involved in.

Thank you for addressing the problem of "Up swing" or "valley girl" intonation! This verbal phenomenon began in the early '90s and, unfortunately, is still ever present in the verbal utterances of most women under the age of forty.

    Finally!
Someone who cared to call out this nerve wracking and annoying habit.
It is a disgrace out there.
An abject trend on TH-cam, from numerous women and men.
The latter, mostly on topics with regards to stupid, self proclaimed “consumer tech / unboxing / reviewing / advising” vids.
Twerps from all walks of life who regard themselves as super-duper sophisticated lads and lasses, but can’t keep up a normal voice-over; instead they think that showing off applies to verbal expression as well.
    Well done, Madame.
Your vid is about the strength of it.
    Many thanks.
    George from Hellas
(a non native English speaking man, at a never ending learning curve).
    😉🙂👋🏻
