    Really enjoyed your video and thanks for pointing out the pests. so many videos are people just showing off their perfect gardens, it's a breath of fresh air to hear someone speak of the trials of keeping tropicals in this country. I have a Brugmansia that was riddled with spider mite, think I may have brought it back from the brink though!

      Thank you for the comments. I’ve been growing tropicals in my garden for about 12 years now and it’s not always easy. Part of my thought process was to be straight talking about this style of gardening. So I’m glad it’s come across that way.
      Cheers

      Fontanesii is a very good Colocasia.
      It can also take lower temps than lots of other Colocasias.

    I started growing Colocasias last year here in Denmark. They are in 10 and 12 l pots and gets fertilizer almost every time I give them water. `Black Magic`, `Aloha`and `White Lava` I keep at 14 degrees in winter with minimum one or two hours of grow light in my bedroom . The will get louse during the winter but are treated with Pyrethrin and occasionally a shower in the bathroom. The C. esculenta are more easy to owerwinter. They are semi dormant at 7 degrees in a greenhouse and get extreamly big during summer

    • @tikitropicals65
      @tikitropicals65  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. Do they go out in the summer? What kind of temperatures do you get in summer in Denmark?

    • @peterkuhne5243
      @peterkuhne5243 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tikitropicals65 They are all out in the summer. At a protected place. The `Black Magic`is the first to get inside the greenhouse. That is when temperatures are below 10 degrees in average for more days in a row. The `Esculenta` is the last to get inside and stay outside until just before the first frost. Temperatures in summer are mostly between 18 and start 20´s but that may vary. (Sorry for the late reply)

    I managed to over winter my Coal miner and Hawaiian ones in my cold conservatory. It stays to about 7 degrees in winter. Last year i kept them both going, they did get leggy towards the light but kept going till spring when i put them back out.

    • @tikitropicals65
      @tikitropicals65  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Coal Miner is a easy one to over winter as it doesn’t tend to go into dormancy when temps cool down.
      Well done on getting the Hawaiians through. They tend to like to stay above 12 degrees to keep them going but if temps are increasing during the day they can take lower without going dormant as they are being warmed up again.

      @@tikitropicals65 how hardy would you say is the normal colocasia escaluenta, and the ilustris, and tea cup ?

    • @tikitropicals65
      @tikitropicals65  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. Generally in colder countries it’s best to bring most varieties of Colocasia into a frost free environment.
      Lots of factors will depend on how well Colocasias can do if left out over winter especially variety
      For example I live in the U.K. with long cold wet winters that tends to rot Colocasias where as in areas of the USA they can have colder temps than me but because they have longer hotter summers the Colocasia has the heat to regrow before rot sets in.
      The plain green Esculenta can usually grow better in cooler temps than T. Cups and Illustris.
      I’m planning on doing some more Colocasia videos very soon.

    Do any of the Hawaiian varieties form a corm, or do they all have to be kept 'ticking over'? I have Diamond Head, Blue Hawaii, Mojito, White Lava etc. Thanks!

    • @tikitropicals65
      @tikitropicals65  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes some do have corms but you need them to be a good size to realistically be able to store them and then restart with heat in spring.
      With Hawaiians I have much more success ticking them over than trying to dry store them. The Colocasia Aloha in the video was left to go dry and it never really got to any size. The ones I left ticking over grew really well once summer came.

    epic video man thanks, is there any way you could spell the 2nd plant you named? ive planted out several varieties this year for the first time and all are withering up, they put out a new small leaf and the same happens, maybe i kept them abit wet before planting? would you water most days now in the june heat? thank you and for the great vid

    • @tikitropicals65
      @tikitropicals65  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi and thank you.
      Colocasia Gaoligongensis I think is the one you mean.
      Planting out is a tricky time for Colocasias and some varieties deal with it better than others. Colocasia love heat so when they go from sitting in a pot that warms quickly to going into the ground where they sit in cold wet soil all night sometimes stalls them or causes other problems.
      Generally try not to plant out small plants.
      Make sure they are hardened off before planting.
      In June night time temps are still low so it will take them time to adjust.
      Colocasia like lots of water when warm but often watering with a hose or tap water can leave the soil cold for hours. Try filling a watering can each day and leave it in a sunny spot. The water will be warmer than the tap water and help them establish better until they are bigger.
      More tropical varieties will do better when evening temps get warmer.

      @@tikitropicals65 Thank you so much!!! im going to try a Gaoligongensis, im a nightmare with pots so im hoping pink china and that one can be left out in a sheltered spot, we dont get hard frosts here..when u had your pink china left in the ground would you expect it to be growing pretty fast yet or just the odd leaf? oddly all my eddoes are fine its just the larger pacific type taros wont do anything! but from watching ur vids growing them in a cooler climate is the challenge, when i lived in the tropics you just cut the top off and stick it back in the soil and eat the tuber and some varities can be harvested again in 4-6 months! thanks bro, appreciate your time to reply

    • @tikitropicals65
      @tikitropicals65  ปีที่แล้ว

      Pink China in the ground in most of the U.K. will only just be starting into growth. It’s been a cold start to the season but by July if temps stay warm they should grow much quicker.

    This is probably a stupid question but how do colocasias get bigger every year if we have to dry store them? (my first year with colocasias)

    • @tikitropicals65
      @tikitropicals65  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. Colocasias during the growing season get bigger and in most varieties so does their corm (tuber).
      A larger corm is can be easier to store plus has energy in to help with growth for the next season.
      Dry storing is about getting the Colocasia through winter not about size. Sometimes a small off shoot can out grow a more mature plant.

      Hi. I actually got a few more Pharaohs Mask so I had 4 plants to get through winter in the end. All of them are still alive and growing. During winter they did go dormant for a few weeks when temperatures dropped below 10 Celsius but I gave them some bottom heat and they started growing again. No way as hard to get through winter as I first thought they would be. I will do an update video soon.
