I have been making this casserole about as long as you've been alive and it is GREAT!!! It's called the Jimmy Dean egg casserole. I have found that if you mix everything into one huge bowl and then pour it into a casserole dish it blends much better. I also freeze most of it. Get a big cutting board and place some parchment paper down. After the casserole cools, cut into 12 squares and place it on the parchment paper, leaving a small space in between each piece. Place it in the freezer until frozen, about an hour and a half. Then get a gallon Ziploc bag and put the portions in the bag. Now you'll have a quick breakfast that will head up in about 3 minutes in the microwave. It tastes just like it came out of the oven. I do this every month.
I just made this tonight and didn't let it set at all. I baked it right after assembly and forgot to butter my casserole first. It turned out delicious. I used homemade italian bread and it got crispy on the bottom but fluffy where the custard settled in the center. Thanks, Laura. 👍🏻
I make this casserole, but with refrigerator crescent roll dough. Sometimes I use sausage, sometimes ham. And either tons of spinach or broccoli. You can also add diced red or green pepper. And I always add dry mustard powder too! I thought I made that up! lol We make this for dinner ever couple weeks. I keep cooked ground sausage and diced ham in the freezer to keep it super easy.
omg we make this all the time for our work breakfasts (when celebrating ) this dish is always a hit and the first to go! it's amazing! (and super simple to make) also easy making your own interpretations of with different mixins!
Yummy, I do a very similar one for Boxing Day, the day after Christmas, but use bacon instead of the sausage, and for the base I used torn up croissants, then after adding the egg, milk and cheese mixture I top it with thinly sliced tomatoes and Parmesan cheese....gets a lovely crust. My family love it Sometimes to change the texture I use sourdough bread or add baby spinach leaves. Love your channels....some things are a little hard to find in Australia, but always give them a try, I will be making you cinnamon scrolls for Christmas morning....they have become a tradition in our house Merry Christmas x
Mmm! I'm going to make this for my bridal party brunch this Saturday. I can't wait to try it! It will go great with the mimosas, blueberry muffins, breakfast potatoes, and fruit salad!
Laura's cooking always looks so simple and stressfree and when the dish is complete, it's like ka-boom~ mouthwatering and delicious and irresistible and looks like a lot of work 😍😍😍 love all your recipes Laura 😘😘😘
Just want to take this opportunity to thank you Laura for taking the time in sharing all your recipes with us and to wish you and your family a fantastic 2016. Happy Holidays! Hug from the Netherlands.
I was just asking my mom for this recipe! She saw it years ago in a magazine and it is so delish! Especially for Christmas morning when everyone is in their pjs and no one feels like whipping up a whole meal.
Hey Laura...Just made this recipe with a twist. I decided to take a chance, cut the bread into cubes, and made croutons to spread on bottom of pan. Was unexpectedly delicious. Enjoy your simple, delicious, and easy recipes. I've used quite a few (meatloaf is sooooo good) of your recipes. Thanks for all the help in the kitchen...GW
This exact strata recipe (only with regular onion) has been my family's Christmas morning breakfast every year for at least the past 20 years. It is amazing and honestly the most delicious breakfast dish I have ever eaten. 😋🎄❤️
I make something very similar, but use Black Forest Ham instead of sausage meat, and put crushed cornflakes and melted butter on top before baking! It's great with a nice fruit salad! This is a tradition for Christmas morning at our place. My Mom made it for years too!
I just made one of these last week. I used sauteed onions and green peppers with left over deli meats. As long as they are mostly cooked you can use what you want for the meat and veggies it is the custard and the bread that makes the dish work.
Congratulations on over 1,000 recipe videos, your great career with guests, specials and opportunities because of your amazing cooking, Laura! Merry Christmas! :D
Thank you so much, I needed a recipe to make for my daughter. She’s a Marine Corps Drill Instructor and has no time to cook, so I’m going to make this and take down to her! I love your channel, your recipes are spot on!
I would love to see a soufflé recipe, like butternut squash soufflé or something like that. My mom made that when I was young and Ive craved it for years! It's just that soufflés intimidate me and if I saw you do it I would know how!
I’m going to try this for breakfast next Sunday as I’m super tired this week and I’m already done preparing breakfast, lunch and dinner for Sunday, tomorrow so that I can just relax tomorrow , but can’t wait to try this recipe out
Laura, you've become my favorite cook! When I need to know how to make something, I search your videos first. You really do a great job explaining and demonstrating each step. Your videos are fun and informative without all the nonsense of many other You Tube cooks. Your dishes always look soooo good too. Keep it up.(If I were your husband, I would weigh 400 pounds) LOL.
2:50 a.m. i've been drinking, and I just put this all together. Waiting on the oven to hit 350. I didnt have mustard so diced up tiny pieces of the bacon I cooked earlier the used the machine thingie to whip it all into nothingness bit liquid. Excited! Thank you so much!!
The wife LOVED this! Tonight I'm thinking of doing like she did on the meatloaf: mixing the bread with the milk AND eggs before adding it to the dish! Why not?! What could it hurt?
yes!!! I started doing brunch on Christmas day for my family..... this will be cooking in my house on Christmas....because I get so busy on that day... thank you!
I made a vegetarian version: instead of sausage, I used 2 pounds of cremini mushrooms. I just cooked them before in a separate pan, until they were really cooked, almost fried and added them in the end. It was fantastic! Thank you for the recipe.
This has been a family tradition in my house for ever holiday breakfast since I can remember! The onion is a new twist! I just recently have been working with making it GF and also Dairy free in that it doesn't have the cheese in. I am unfortunately unable to have both :( but I am so excited you have shared this awesome recipe and gave the cool tip of the onions and the dry mustard!
Laura thank you sooooo very much for sharing your recipes. LOVE your recipes, its very easy and simple. I will cook this recipe for my family. Thank you.👏👏👏👍👍👍
I JUST WANT TO LET YOU KNOW I THINK IT'S GREAT THAT YOU ALWAYS HAVE YOUR HAIR UP WHILE COOKING. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK, HAVE LEARNED A LOT FROM YOUR COOKING.
Hey everyone instead of bread you should try this for a little sweeter take on the recipe. Buy a box of frozen ego waffles and let them thaw out. Now dice or shred up those waffles and use in place of the bread. Thank me later :)
It's always funny to me when people ask questions on a video for a casserole, of all things, wanting to know "can I add X?", or "can I leave out Y?" LOL! It's a casserole, for heaven's sake, you can add in or leave out whatever you want. For example, I would leave out the bread and substitute with cooked diced or shredded potatoes, but that's just me. It's your kitchen - cook however you want.
I wouldn't recommend leaving our the bread. The bread is the backbone of this recipe. It is what gives it the fluffy, soufflé like texture, something that hash browns surly would not achieve.
OMG! So I cut the recipe in half, used sourdough bread with crust removed and added a touch of Cajun Shake seasoning. It was AMAZING! Will fix this again for sure. You're awesome Laura!!
Thanks for yummy recipe. I have been watching your video on TH-cam for awhile and just decided to make it on Sunday morning It was so delicious and this week I just made a second time, 😋😋😋😋😋
I do a casserole almost like this one every Christmas morning. I use seasoned croutons instead of bread and cream of mushroom soup instead of milk. My family LOVES it. Merry Christmas Laura! :-)
Could I suggest that onion and chopped tomatoes be added to this breakfast dish ? Very good recipe. I love Laura's recipes and demonstrations. Joyce in Sunny Florida
you never look back and yet here using it okay she wants a piece of that sausage. this was a very good video thank you I will try this super awesome dish
I use a similar recipe, but maple breakfast sausage, qtr tsp curry powder...& mushrooms (but I put those in everything). I'll try it this way next time so the kiddos don't get bored;) thanks
This is like a savory bread pudding! And I'd like to think that this is quite healthy since it doesn't involve much fat except from the already-existing ingredients like the sausage, milk and cheese. If you reduce the cheese, it'd be even healthier. It's high in protein too. Thank you for this!

Great idea
I love your channel because u make food within poor peoples price range
Very good presentation. Your breakfast casserole looks delicious.Thank you.
Yum! My grandma's signature breakfast casserole has shredded potatoes at the bottom and then sausage, cheese, egg, and onions! Tastes like home
I just made this tonight and didn't let it set at all. I baked it right after assembly and forgot to butter my casserole first. It turned out delicious. I used homemade italian bread and it got crispy on the bottom but fluffy where the custard settled in the center. Thanks, Laura. 👍🏻
"I want a piece of the sausage right there!" I love how honest your videos are.
Try making one with hash browns and add red and green peppers, onions and mushrooms. It is so good.
K
That sounds so good!
I do that with tator tots and cream of mushroom soup

Do you blanch your spinach or broccoli & add salt & pepper to your egg mixture?

Also using "day old" bread gives the dish a better texture. I just cut mine into cubes and then dry them out in the oven .

+Lyssa Diane it's like I'm looking in a mirror
This looks so good and so simple! I'm always looking for breakfast ideas
I always leave the crust on my bread cause to me it has all that baked flavor. I love the heel s also of the bread too. They are so good.
Still love this breakfast casserole. I make it every year for Christmas morning. Just put mine in the fridge
Going to try this! Need to feed a hungry crowd! Sounds perfect!

is it any good with the potato?
Micheal, YES I prefer potatoes instead of the bread!☺
I would use croissants,if I was to use bread!☺
I need to make this for Christmas morning! Xx thanks Laura
Planning to do this for Christmas 2021! Gonna make it the day before and serve it morning of. Thank you!
OMG! So I cut the recipe in half, used sourdough bread with crust removed and added a touch of Cajun Shake seasoning. It was AMAZING! Will fix this again for sure. You're awesome Laura!!

you deserve your own show on the food network or cooking channel!! (:
Thanks Laura, it looks absolutely delicious. Happy Holidays :-)
Looks good! Gonna try this with substitutions... biscuits instead of bread slices and ham or bacon instead of sausage.
I make a very similar casserole but use asiago cheese bread cubed. I love breakfast casseroles. Especially on that's prepared the night before.
Now THAT sounds amazing!! I love Asiago cheese bread by itself, so using it in this recipe would be dangerous... I'd eat the whole thing!
I make this dish on every holiday and when we get snow here in Ga
love the recipe Laura!! Thanks for the idea.
I’m so doing this! I love u Laura! Thanks for sharing!!
Thanks for yummy recipe. I have been watching your video on TH-cam for awhile and just decided to make it on Sunday morning

I use a similar recipe, but maple breakfast sausage, qtr tsp curry powder...& mushrooms (but I put those in everything). I'll try it this way next time so the kiddos don't get bored;) thanks
Looks delicious! Steamed broccoli pieces would make it even tastier and more nutritious!
Great recipe. I'm going to make this for Teacher Appreciation Day.
see you makes appetite for any food ☺ thank you
This looks sooo good. Of course, I wouldn't discard none of the sausage fat because it would take this dish to a whole other level.
This is like a savory bread pudding! And I'd like to think that this is quite healthy since it doesn't involve much fat except from the already-existing ingredients like the sausage, milk and cheese. If you reduce the cheese, it'd be even healthier. It's high in protein too. Thank you for this!
