Hey guys, in this video, I talk about one of the most severely underrated credit card setups in existence, the Citi Trifecta. On TH-cam, you’ll find plenty of videos discussing the Chase Trifecta, Amex Trifecta, and even the Capital One Duo these days, but Citi’s credit cards are often left out of the conversation. The Citi Trifecta is composed of the Citi Double Cash, Citi Custom Cash, and Citi Premier card, but you can also add the Citi Rewards + card to it to make a really solid quadfecta. If you’re looking to build out your credit card setup and are weighing your options, the Citi Trifecta is definitely one to consider in my opinion. If you’ve been wondering “Is the Citi Trifecta worth it?” or “Is the Citi Trifecta better than the Chase and/or Amex Trifecta?” you’ve come to the right place.

EDIT: I forgot to mention in the review portion for the Citi Premier that it also gets 3x on supermarkets. I mentioned it later in the video, but I wanted to make sure I made that clear!

Do you think the Citi Trifecta is underrated? 👇🏼
I just found your channel while searching for a well rounded review of the Citi Custom Cash card and cannot say enough about how helpful your reviews have been. I love that you list both pros and cons, as well as going into detail of how to best utilize the cash back features and points for travel. Your page and your videos are awesome! Thanks for including Odin too 😊❤
Amazing explanation. Citi trifecta is criminally underrated. I just wish they had a bigger business cards setup
- facts. Not even 1 business card that earns TYs
I really appreciate that! I think this setup deserves a lot more love than it gets right now.
Thank you Spencer for this video, it really helped me a lot! Down to earth 😊
The Citi Trifecta is definitely a great setup to consider! If only it was easier to get approved for the Premier card, that one is always tough to get approved for and it’s hard to figure out why. Nice overview Spencer!
I agree! I hope I'll be able to get it somewhat easily one day but we'll see. Thank you Stan!
The best way to get Citi cards is let them come to you. When they want you to apply for their products and certain ones they will send a mail inviter. Pretty much how I get my Citi cards lol.
I was looking for a Citi trifecta video and this nailed it🤝
I love to hear it!!
Great info! Thanks
Thanks so much!!
Great video Spencer! Haven’t watched it yet but I know it will be!
Thank you so much! 🥈
Great overview of a very underrated setup! Thanks for the info Spencer! ✌️
Thank you Cesar!
The Citi Custom Cash ALONE is a pretty amazing card. It is such a unique card in the way that you have so much flexibility with what category you can earn 5% on every month. It really adds to the power of the trifecta 💪🏼 Awesome video Spencer!
I completely agree! Thanks for being here Chase!
Great video Spencer. Very informative. In ways, the Citi tri/quadfecta is definitely underrated for sure and should be on everyone's radar at some point in their credit card journey
Thank you for being here!
The Citi Trifecta is definitely super underrated and honestly isn't really talked about at all. The Premier Card is super well-rounded with the multipliers, the Double Cash obviously being a great option as a catch all, and the Custom Cash being a great option for something like Gas Stations. Citi still has decent travel partners as well in terms of transferring out those points to travel partners. Great video as always Spencer!
Thank you for watching Matt! It seems like we have similar takes on their cards.
The custom card is definitely one of their most refreshing cards they've come out with. The rewards+ im told is the card to use for purchases less than 5 dollars as the round up feature really comes alive there.
You’ve convinced me on the rewards+
It can definitely be a solid addition!!
Wow! What a great and informative video. I do have the Premier(upgraded from Rewards+) and I am fixing my credit with the Diamond Preferred 0% but will change that when done to a Custom Cash or Double Cash. Your explanation of the quadfecta makes it a no brainer for the future. Thanks
I'm glad you found value in this one! Thanks so much for watching!
It was great to learn about the CITI side of things with this video, it’s in the dark for most people since like the title says, it’s least talked about ha.
Honestly very powerful, Custom Cash alone has always been a heavy hitter. But I found the most interesting takes for the Discord conversations, wasn’t aware of the rebates, bonuses for transfer to those hotel chains etc and is super valuable info.
And great point about paying the taxes and fees with cards that have travel protections!
Nice Spencer, this was great!
It's great to hear this was valuable for you! I'm trying to give the most well rounded approach I can to each of these setups, but for this one in particular, I'd agree with you that it's a bit underrated in a sense. Thanks for watching as always man!
I use the citi premier as my main card. Definitely a great earner points wise. One thing to note is it still has purchase protection and extended warranty. Not overtly advertised but it is there. I had to go into the card benefits section online once I got my card to find it.
That's great to know! Thanks for letting me know about the protections too.
Spencer, this was a really helpful and clear video that opened my eyes to the usefulness of some of the free Citi cards. Until you spelled things out so helpfully, I had kind of ignored them all these years. I just applied for the Custom Cash (for the 5% categories and the sign-up bonus), using your link, and I plan to apply for the Rewards+ card soon, mainly to gain the 10% point rebate after point transfers. Please keep up the great work.
I'm so glad it was helpful! Thank you so much for the support as well! That really means a lot.
Awesome breakdown of the Citi setup! I think the Custom Cash in particular is great for anyone, and the Premier has a better variety of multiplers. I am wary of the lack of travel protections, but the setup should be nice for those in the late stages of the credit card game (and have “better” travel cards for perks/protections). 👍
Thanks for watching Josh!
Thanks so much for the video, can't wait for the rumored citi strata elite to come out. 1 thing you missed is that the premier actually gives you 3x on groceries
Of course! I wanted to get a full review out of the setup as it is currently before the new cards come out. And good catch on the 3x on groceries with the Premier. I mentioned it later but in a more subtle way so I went ahead and updated the pinned comment to make it more clear.
Citi cards are pretty underrated. This was a great breakdown of the value you can extract from this setup. I currently have no Citi cards, but now I’m considering adding some.
I'm happy to hear you found value in it!! Thanks for watching!
I’m not sure if it’s just my experience but disputing something through citi is ridiculously simple fast and effective. I disputed something and it was credited right away as a permanent credit no questions asked or documents uploaded.
Good to know!
If only they had American Airlines + some better hotel options. Thanks for the info + video!
Agreed. I don't love their partners but I do think they're underrated at the same time. Thanks for watching!
Citi premier covers almost everything I need I use it a lot .
It's a solid card for sure!
I converted my Citi AAdvantage card into a Citi DC card today. Beginning the road map to my citi trifecta now by setting it up first by getting the cards one at a time!
This video covers just about every pro and con that I can think of regarding the Citi Trifecta! Overall, I think the Citi Trifecta is underrated. In my opinion, the Citi Double Cash is a bit overrated, but the other cards are underrated. The Citi Trifecta is probably one of the best trifectas because it provides good rewards in almost every high spending category for most people. The Citi Rewards+ card is definitely an underrated card, and I think a lot of people can benefit from it. It is definitely one of the cards that I am interested in getting. The Citi Premier card is also a good travel card. The only thing I don’t like about it, other than the lack of travel protection, is the fairly high spend requirement to earn the hotel credit. It would be better if the hotel credit on the Premier was more like the hotel credit on the CSP. This is a trifecta (or quadfecta) is something I could see myself having one day. Awesome video!😊
I'm glad you thought it was thorough! I definitely try to make sure and cover as much as I possibly can that I think people would be interested in. Thank you so much for your detailed comment as always man! I know people find a lot of value in that!
Just got approved for the Citi Premier! 🎉 I tried to do the pre-approval for Capital One but they said I wasn’t eligible so I went with Citi and I got approved.
That's awesome!! Congrats on that!!
What credit score did u have?
>Good to know the cards link. Some don't like calling in but personally prefer to talk to a fellow human here. Now I know the detail on how you can use any card if they are all linked. thanks!
>Also a good point on not booking travel (and this translates for those who buy gift cards too) on the credit card and using points that you loose a decent amount protections, especially the card specific ones.
I'm glad this one was helpful to you! Thanks so much for watching man!
I would love it if you did a video like this on the personal credit cards that US Bank offers
That's not a bad idea! I should cover more of the underappreciated setups for sure.
Can you do a review about all the US Bank credit cards? They got really nice for utility and bills.
That's the second comment asking about this so maybe I will!
I went down the Citi route because the double cash didnt have a bonus and i knew i wasnt going to be able to make the spend for any of the other cards, so i figured id go with that and get the others when i had the spend to earn it.
Not a bad idea!!
I have to turn my volume all the way up to hear you and since I wear headphones when ads pop up it blasts in my ear
Volume was fine for me
@@striker246810 it always happens to only his videos idk why tho
That's odd. My videos are at the recommended volume from YT. Thanks for letting me know though! Oh and here's your medal for commenting so early 🥉
The citi trifecta is definitely underrated and the rewards+ card rebate feature wasn't even something I was aware off. The main pitfalls really are citi's lack luster transfer partners and that they constantly gut the protections on their cards. For me they're going to be a late game play since I just finished the chase trifecta and the cff has gas this quarter so I can delay the ccc but for me it made more sense to prioritize lenders like chase and cap one in the early game since my first "premium" card was the amex gold.
I see where you're coming from! I plan on eventually adding the Citi Premier myself, but I'm in the same boat as you as it'll be a later game play for me.
@SpencerJohnsonOfficial similar plan for me. Once I get the citi custom cash I'll stockpile thank you points while burning through my UR and than get the premier when I cancel the csp at point depletion.
If I wasn’t focused on waiting to apply for the venture x I would get this card ASAP. Maybe sometime next year.
I get it! I see myself adding it someday, but it still isn't a huge priority yet.
Would you be able to get the rewards+ without the premier and just use that 10% points back bonus on a cash back setup with the custom and double cash, bc if that's the case it will effectively make those cards give 5.5 and 2.2% back in their categories for the first 100000 points
Yes
Missin the stache. November cant come soon enough...
Debating on applying for the freedom flex or the custom cash next. Leaning towards the custom cash cause I really only need it for gas. Where we’re at right now we’re just focused on cash back so we’re not loyal to any one bank even though we really do like chase
The freedom flex has gas as one of its 5x categories this quarter. Might be better to get the flex now, and then get the CC next quarter.
The Custom Cash has been and likely always will be my gas card unless I end up liking another card more. You could always get the Flex now with the 5x rotating category of gas it currently has (as mentioned below), or get it when it offers 5x back on gas for a year as part of its welcome bonus, but for a consistent gas category, the Custom Cash is solid.
Being Team Cash Back, the Citi Premier has no value for me, however I am on the fence about the Citi Rewards+ card. I have the DC and CC cards so the 10% TYP rebate is appealing, getting an extra 0.2% or 0.5% on purchases. I don't make a lot of
Lol team cash back can absolutely take advantage of the premier especially if these are categories frequently used and all cards are pooled together. The rewards+ is cool but keep in mind the 10 percent is only for the first 100,000 points redeemed ($1000) so whether an extra 100 dollars is worth it is up to you.
That effective 1:4 transfer ratio from citi points to Radisson sounds insanely OP 👀
Yeah that was pretty eye opening for sure.
Nice video I subbed. I have the Costco, AA, premier, and just got the custom cash. I want the trifecta but I can’t get myself to product change Costco or even AA because I fly from ATL to Miami and AA is the main airline. Any suggestions?
Thank you so much! It sounds like you got a pretty solid Citi setup already. You don’t need to get rid of the Costco or AA cards by any means. Why not just leave them all open if they all give you positive value?
Deal breaker is all are master card. I need a Visa card for Costco.
👍🏻
I’m a huge Chase and Amex fanboy, but this trio, or quadruple, may be worth considering for the SUBs and transfer partners down the road!
Maybe I’m an outliner, but I liked the mustache. Sure, it was still growing, but I didn’t hate it! I feel like if you let go and let grow, chin hair as well, it’ll look good on you!
As always, tell good boy Odin and internet stranger once again says hello!
- Ivan
Good to know Ivan! Maybe I'll have to grow it back out at some point haha. Thank you for being here as always and I'll tell Odin you said hi!
Citi cards are pretty solid. The only monkey wrench is their weird denials for the premier. Been denied twice now which makes me not want to bother with citi anymore
I've heard folks really have a hard time with that card which is why I haven't added it yet. I plan on trying one day though!
So how does the point valuation compare to the Chase cards? Which comes out ahead with a greater valuation when transferring (on average)- Chase or Citi ? THANK YOU! New fan! :)
Chase points are valued at 2 cents per point
On average, Chase wins with a valuation of 2 cpp, but it really just depends on what transfer partners you value more personally! Thank you so much for the support!!
Why pay a annual fee
Non of the extras benefit someone that lives outside a city.
I don’t do any Uber
I don’t work out
I don’t buy over priced clothes
I don’t do grub hub etc
But doing cash back or miles
Is fine but still no annual fee.
If I go to a lounge I go . I buy first class tickets . Why spend thousands when you just spend a little.
Never understood the benefits that only less than 1% use them.
The Premier offers 3x on supermarkets
Correct! I updated that in my pinned comment
One clarification…the Citi Premier includes 3x back on groceries which you forgot to mention so no need to use that category for the CC if you can benefit from a different category on the CC. Great sleeper card to cover dining/grocery/gas for 3x which are categories seemingly abandoned by Chase.
I’ll give you gas and grocery. Dining is covered by all cards pretty extensively (sapphire preferred and unlimited.
Good catch! I forgot to mention that in the review portion somehow, but I did mention it later in the video in a more subtle way so I went ahead and updated the pinned comment to make it more clear.
The Citi Premier is a great card for the 95 annual fee. For people traveling a lot is in my opinion better that the CSP.
I can see that argument for sure!
Thank you for a great explanation! Question: I am confused about what people mean when they say the transfer partners are lacking (e.g. for Citi or for C1). If I prioritize travel to Asia, for example, is it fair to say that Citi is on par with Chase? Is the common understanding of the transfer partners based on a more domestic travel profile, or is it about hotels (which I know little about)? Just curious.
Thank you for watching! And yes you are right. Their partners are lacking for domestic travel, but pretty underrated for international travel. If you're just focused on international flights, Citi points are very valuable!
Citi cards aren't visa either, so can't use them at Costco which is where I spend a lot. Venture X gives 2% back and it's a visa, plus 3% back on groceries with the Savor one even though it's a mastercard.
Good note! That's why it's important to have some credit card diversity in my opinion.
Rewards plus needs to be the third card
I hope you stayed long enough to see me talk about it!
I have the Bilt and VentureX card. Waiting to apply for the Savor One and a gas one. I’m wondering what should be my next step. I want to travel.
@@MrBankRelations Thank you. Will look into those.
It depends on what you're going for! I'd look for cards with transfer partners you know you'll use. Then you can evaluate from there. I did make a video on some of the best travel cards right now (in my opinion), so feel free to check that out!
I have citi quadfecta + American airline business card & Costco (wife has a custom cash too so use her card for gas & mine for groceries)
Nice!!
The citi custom card is my favorite card
That's awesome!
@@SpencerJohnsonOfficial yup
Nice vide, I like the citi combination a lot
The TYP SUBs will be 25,000 from the Rewards+, 20,000 from CCC, and 60,000 from Premier, that 105,000 pool becomes 115500 TYPs thanks to the rewards+ 10% multiplier assuming you don't redeem all of it in the same year. Minus $95 worth of points for the annual fee and you're sitting at 106,000 Points in value
Then product change the Premier into a second Citi custom cash, no SUB this time but you now have a no fee setup with effective 5.5% Gas, 5.5% Grocery, 2.22% catch all card.. Which is my Citi endgame.
Great evaluation here. A second Citi Custom Cash is a solid strategy too! Thank you so much for watching!
Is there any pros or cons to combining citi thank you accounts?
the double cash and custom cash are so great, the premier is not talked about as much
It deserves more love in my opinion!
The grandfathered Citi Dividends could make it a 4 card set up . Its citis freedom card with quarterly 5% catogorys. Different than chase as you can max it out for the year with 6k spend in a single quarter on a single purchase. For $300 a year earn. Doing gas on it this quarter.
Good to know! While that card isn't available for everyone anymore, it could make for a solid addition to this setup for sure.
Rewards+ is a solid card, once you merge all of your TYP accounts; whenever you transfer the TYP to some airlines/hotels, you will automatically get your 10% bonus back. Well, the actual rebate bonus becomes available at the end of the statement period, but this technique immediately puts TYP ecosystem at a minimum 1.1 cpp rate (even for gift card transfer it works!!)
Imagine, if you want the same 1.1 cpp for Amex ecosystem, you need hefty $695 CS platinum lol
Man, screw the stache haters. Mans can do as he pleases.
FX fees galore though I’m sticking with my smorgasbord setup.
Whatever works best for you is what you should use!
Any data points to show if military get the fee waived? I’ve heard that they don’t, I’ve heard that they do, I’ve heard that they do but you have to have a balance of more than $0 when your annual fee posts due to whatever algorithm is used.
I don't personally know for Citi cards exactly. I know Amex is good about that but I couldn't confirm for Citi. Hopefully others could confirm for you though!
I know if you have to many credit cards with chase and too much available credit. You might get denied for a credit card unless you move around available credit from another card. Does this count for their business cards too? I got the trifecta but I don’t want that to stop me from getting ink cards cause I have 35k with the trifecta
If you're asking about Chase and not Citi, then yes sometimes you do have to move your limit from other cards to the new one you want to get approved for. I imagine this also applies to your business cards, but I assume they treat those a bit differently and almost treat each of your businesses as a new customer in a way. That doesn't apply to everything, but I could see that being the case here. Then again though, you do have to add your SSN on business cards apps so I'm sure they keep your personal card limits in mind too.
@@SpencerJohnsonOfficial would there ever be a situation where I’d have to move credit from my CSP or freedom cards in order to qualify for an ink card? Can you even move credit from personal to business cards?
@@SamuraiEdge556 Oh I see what you're saying now. You can't move limits between personal and business cards to my knowledge.
I like citi, but the only thing that stops me from running a full citi setup is the lack of travel, auto rental, & cell phone insurance.
I get it!!
don't think you mentioned that Citi points can be shared between people (for example, between my wifes account and mine), HOWEVER, points earned by the Custom Cash can NOT be shared
Good note there! I did not mention that in the video. Thank you!
Citi Prestige (no available for new customers) + Citi Rewards +......higher earnings rate AND that 10% points back. I then use ThankYou points to redeem for discounted gift cards that go between 10% to 15% off normal 1 cent per point values. For example, $100 Apple GC selling for 8,500 points. With 10% back from Rewards + the GC costed me 7,650 points. This means that when I spent on airfare and dining on my Prestige I'm getting roughly 6.5% back in value. I know it's not as high as some airline biz class redemptions but in reality those "value per point" can't be trusted since you would have never spent cash for the biz class anyway whereas I would pay the same in cash to buy stuff from Apple.
That's awesome! Thanks for sharing your experience!!
I believe the Citi Premier gives 3x on Supermarkets
Correct! I updated my pinned comment to reflect that.
I wonder if Jetblue tries to smack you with taxes with citi like if you try and transfer from amex
I'm not too sure tbh. I haven't tried personally.
You forgot the big elephant in the room,
Citi cards are all mastercards,so no costco, which is the major wholesale store,so you're gonna need a visa card 🤣
- unless you get the citi costco card! 😉
Not everyone shops at Costco, but that's a good point! Always good to have options.
The citi trifecta is tempting due to the wide range of earnings categories..But The biggest struggle is deciding what is better, the earnings rate of a credit card setup, or the value of those points/partners. I think the latter is more important and Citi’s partners are bad imo
Great Quadfecta breakdown. I’m intrigued with Citi airline partners and things the Premier is what the CSP SHOULD be.
It’s an interesting and powerful in its own right set up. Still awaiting Strata to see what they’re going to do there.
Thank you Matt! I definitely think it's a solid setup that deserves a bit more love.
@@SpencerJohnsonOfficial Citi and Chase are solid “Anchor” point systems as you can always guarantee a 1CPP if you ever need to pull the ripcord and cash out, unlike MR Points and Capital One Miles. So they’ll always have that starting frame of reference. It’s also cool you can product change anywhere in the stack. I think the lack of love is mainly fueled by the loss of protections (and the need to hack them back via Chase or AmEx) and people are just waiting to see what else they can do. That said the current lineup isn’t bad.
It’s a good setup for $95 and flexible across many spending categories, but the transfer partners are lacking to say the least and with no travel protections it’s basically a $95 cash back setup. For the same price you can have Chase’s cards and they provide exactly what Citi doesn’t in good partners and the best protections you can get from cards. Citi just isn’t competitive at that price point
Spencer if someone has the Citi Premier and 3 Custom Cash cards earning 5% on gas, groceries, restaurants. Is that a Citi Dual or Citi Quadfecta. 😂
Hahah that's awesome. That's a deadly quadfecta in my opinion.
can you put 1 cent of gas in your car with the rewards plus card and get it rounded up to 10 points? do this 1000000 times and live for free?
Lol I wonder what terms they have against that.. maybe none!! 🤣
1st
He's done it again! 👑
Great vid, but my experience with Citi has been underwhelming. Citibank is trash. Great to start but be careful, they like to gatekeep how you spend and what credit cards you use.
I'm sorry to hear that. Everyone's experience is a bit different, but I appreciate you sharing your perspective.
Citi Premier dropped to 60k. I'll wait for when it's back to 75k
I believe it's at 75k on their public website if you wanna check it out.
Grocery is covered by the Citi Premier. You fumbled on that 😂
Correct! I mentioned it later more subtly but somehow missed that in my review. It's updated in the pinned comment though.
How bout a us bank trifecta lol
That's the 3rd comment asking about that setup so I'll have to look into it!
2nd
Close!! Just outside of the top 3 this time around...
You are so handsome
