- Finally get a chance to take a look at the new Menards Bay Window Caboose. Beautiful, However loose trucks and lighting issues make this a bad luck of the draw for Menards. At this price point like I have said before, I usually just fix the problem and move on. That remains to be seen until I dive in and find it? Maybe? Just Return it and get a new one? We will see? A couple of suggestions on the caboose Mark.
1) Check the pick-up rollers for proper downward tension, that is, make sure the pick-up roller springs have enough tension to push the roller assemblys down.
2) Clean the pick-up rollers and make sure they're rotating freely. If they're stiff put a SMALL drop of oil on each end of the pick-up roller axle and rotate the roller until it turns freely.
3) Clean the truck wheels. There may be rust inhibitor or possibly mold release or some compound on them affecting ground conductivity. (There may be rust inhibitor on the pick-up rollers as well, which is one of the reasons I suggested cleaning them.)
4) The caboose may be too light to establish proper contact with the track. (I had that problem with a Lionel trolley.) Ballasting the caboose will solve the problem if it's caused by light weight.

Thanks Wayne 👍🏻 I actually just returned it today so I can tell you I did carefully take it apart. I checked the board as best I could. They have all the wires hot glued to anything and everything so I just put it back together. I didn’t want to ruin it if I can just exchange it.! The new one I picked up today works as it should. I really appreciate your help and usually hope to fix things myself but sometimes it’s not worth the time if I can still just get a replacement. Thanks again 😊 Mark
@@markslioneltrains You're welcome Mark! I've heard of Menard's (and some others) hot-gluing the wires in place and making the things a PITA to work on. I think it's bad practice and unecessary but of course they didn't ask me!

Great video and review. I have the earlier S.F. Warbonnet caboose. One of the rollers was crimped too tight, after that was resolved, it was ok. Thanks for sharing.

Mine came with the wires to one truck reversed, and with only a short time on the track one of the pickup rollers was very hot. It had a dead short. I reversed the wires on the circuit board and it fixed it. However I think it burnt up part of the board as only one of the flashing lights work on one end now. The wires to the trucks both being white it is hard to diagnose which is the problem. Otherwise I think it is a nice caboose with the rolling bearing caps on the ends of the axles, and as you pointed out the separately applied grab irons.

I like it Mark, it's light so it won't load up the train. I have MTH premier cabooses but they're too heavy.

Mark, try oiling the wheels and pickup rollers, also try adjusting the pickup roller downward towards the track.
I was messing with the pick up rollers off camera quite a bit. I actually think the problem may be inside the Caboose. I will try to mention what the outcome will be in a future video when I have time to take him apart.! Nice hearing from you and if I remember I'll let you know as well.! Mark

Only one out of the four ground wheel sets are picking up power. Not worth my time to find out the problem when I can still return it without ruining it. Thought you would want to know. Mark

I have the New Haven Caboose. I have no issues with it. The only thing I do not like is that the leds are to bright for my liking. The interior lighting is steady in my caboose. Your caboose looks like my k-line and old lionel cars running on my layout.

Neat little caboose Mark. Looks like you’re gonna have to replace the light bulb inside or swap it out for LED. Reminds me of an I-12 caboose. Sometimes I wish trains were still made with American labor instead of cheap Chinese labor. My MTH Premier reefer would go nicely with that Santa Fe freight though.
I hear you Hunter on the cheap Chinese labor but without it the price would? You know. Actually it is LED and I think the problem is inside the Caboose so I have to take him apart when I have time. Awesome on the looking good reefer. Always been a fan of the Santa Fe road name.! 🙂
@@markslioneltrains also I don’t see how that caboose would be compatible with the doodlebug because it looks like a passenger engine while cabooses were made for freight.

Boy, it's a shame the lighting is the way it is, but I'm sure that can be addressed. Otherwise, the caboose looks very nice. Thank you for the rubber band tip to fix the coupler issues with their intermodal and autorack couplers from your previous video.

It's a sharp caboose Mark. What I don't understand is all the comments pointing out what they don't like and what you should do so they like it. What do ppl expect? It's cheap and made in China. It's not going to be perfection. My M&M's caboose is the same and I love it.
Did your Caboose work right away or did you have to fix it to make it work? I'm trying not to discourage folks but at the same time trying to make clear what you are getting. You would be surprised some of the comments expecting perfection and better quality control from Menards. I try and just tell it the way I see it the best I can. I will be interested to hear about your Caboose.! 🤔

Yeah it has a different light but I'm ok with what I get as long as it works and looks nice..my biggest gripe about menards are their terrible couplers. But I try to find the good in what I got and not ruining others day by crying online. You Mark are pretty brave to offer your review videos. I just don't have the tolerance, obviously. 🤣🤣👍

I bought the M&M's caboose from Menards one of the Pins that hold the Center Rail Pickup roller came off when I opened it. I emailed Menards and asked for a replacment but the were sold out. I will have to find a way to secure that Pin before I can run it. 😞 I knew I should have gotten the 4-Pack!!!
Maybe can you make one out of a paper clip or thin wire.! 👍😊

LOL 😂 Yikes 😳 It very well could have after opening it up and looking at the hodge podge of wire and hot glue. I put it right back together and returned it.👍🏻

This particular Caboose has a negative ground continuity issue on all but one wheel. It just is not worth my time when It can still be exchanged for one that works. This happens from time to time at this price point and in my opinion to be expected.
