The ending to the 2005 Royal Rumble is one of the best unscripted moments in Wrestling history. It took me years to find out that it wasn't planned. Vince tearing his quads is obviously what it makes it most iconic.
Especially since we've already seen this in the 1994 Rumble, you'd think it was planned but NOPE. Thank god we got the brilliant moment of Vince busting out his quads
The best part is, the theme of that year's rumble was basically a raw vs smackdown angle. Eddie Guerrero and Chris Benoit were the first two guys entering, the commentators make an emphasis on how the two previous years a smackdown guy won, they bicker about if a raw or a smackdown will win, at one point there's a small smackdow vs raw war before everyone gangs up and eliminate Muhammed Hassan. At the endgame of the match there's also a small alliance between John Cena and Rey Mysterio (the two smackdown babyfaces at the time) against Batista and Edge (two Raw Heels). And most importantly almost at the end where the Batista and Cena botch happens, to cover it up, Raw referees claim that Cena touched the ground first and therefore Batista won the match. While the smackdown referees claimed that the opposite happened and therefore Cena won. And it's just so... perfectly timed, like it's a genuine instance of accidental genius because it's so perfect you can almost believe it was planned

It really was. Earlier in the Rumble, Raw GM Eric Bischoff came down to root for the Raw guys, only to be followed by Smackdown GM Teddy Long who cheered on the Smackdown guys. Shortly thereafter, there was a Raw superstar vs Smackdown superstar stare-down which the fans absolutely ate up. When Batista and Cena both got eliminated, they played into that with the Raw refs saying Batista won and the Smackdown refs saying Cena won. Genius.

For years I was convinced 2005's ending was planned. It really was perfect. A part of me still wishes it was planned. And a small, sceptical tin foil hat wearing part of me, still thinks it is.
So, it wasn't a royal rumble but there was regular over the top rope elim match with Tatanka where he goes over the rope and he's standing outside the ring. The camera zooms into his face and Michael Cole says "Tatanka has NOT been eliminated" despite everyone clearly seeing him go over the rope and the camera zooming into him just staring menacingly into the ring . Not sure why I remembered that suddenly but I also can't find it online and it might just be a fever dream I had one night
Juggaa J: It's was Rikiski Rikiski: I did it for the Rock, I did it for the people, I did it for the Rumble Jey Uso: I did it for Roman, I did it for the family, I did it for the petalitre.
Give credit where it's due, it was actually Bobby The Brain Heenan who came with the reason why Savage wasn't eliminated from the '92 Rumble. Heenan: "Oh I know know what it is Monsoon, he wasn't thrown over the top rope, so that means he can go back in. I believe that's one of the rules of the Royal Rumble."
It actually WAS a rule! In 1989 Andre The Giant eliminated himself to escape Jake's snake Damien because he was deathly afraid of it. After that a rule was made that a wrestler had to actually be thrown out of the ring by someone else to be eliminated
At least Vince didnt do in 2005 what he did in 1994, when he decided that the only fair way to determine which WRESTLER would get to WRESTLE against the world WRESTLING federation champion for the world WRESTLING championship at WRESTLEmania... was a coin toss.
9:42 it's not "who's leg hit the ground first" it's "who's *second* leg hit the ground first because, as the rules go, " both feet must hit the floor". So if you look at Batista's right leg and John Cena's left leg, they both really do hit the ground at the exact same time.
And here's the weirdest part about the 05 Rumble, both Cena and Batista had World Title matches at Mania that year! 😂😂😂😂 They actually had the perfect ending for them to both have their shot 😂
these videos keep forgetting the 1996 Royal Rumble when Vader eliminated Shawn Michaels after Michaels eliminated him, but Michaels was allowed to go back into the match were he later won the match.

I always wondered if Rock’s feet touching was a legit botch that they had to address, but the way they filmed the elimination made me think otherwise. They always film the final elimination so that you see the guy hit the mat, but this one was filmed from behind so you didn’t see the feet hitting. They didn’t show the alternate angle until RAW the next night.

I think they acknowledge the Big show and Rock botch elimination on an episode on Raw .. I remember Rock said if Show won he could have been the scorpion king! 😂
I think the Finley spot in 2008 was he was supposed to jump over the top rope to the floor with Hornswaggle but Finley crawled under the bottom rope because that is how he normally left the ring at the time. Same with Macho Man, he was so used to jumping over the top rope to exit the ring that he was just not thinking at the time.
And in 2001 Austin got pissed off, took a steel chair into the ring and started twatting everyone with it left and right...and ended up winning the match. No DQ, no punishment. Perfectly legal and was allowed to win. So.....yeah 🤷♂️
Considering how much Batista and Cena would be pushed over the next 5 years, the Royal Rumble 2005 "botch" works out really well to show how evenly matched they truly were, not to mention it was a Raw guy and a Smackdown guy still in the early days of the brand split, so you could conceivably award the win to both and they'd each get their separate WWE/World Title shots at Mania anyway, which they did, but without having one having to lose face and win a tournament to get his shot. It works even better than the "planned" 1994 finish with Luger and Bret considering both had to get separate shots at Yokozuna and Bret had to fight Owen first to make things even. And Luger's shot was pretty much the end of his main event run in WWE, while Bret, Cena and Batista would stay in the picture for years afterwards.
Their actually was a rule in place about wrestlers eliminating themselves.
