    This worked perfectly, and let me get a head start on Home Assistant before my HA Yellow showed up. I think you've hit a perfect sweet spot for your channel tutorials of a whole bunch of people that are new to HA trying to figure out how to use it, while all the existing tutorials are using old(er) versions of HA.

    This is a really good tutorial, I've just gotten into smartening up my home so everything is new to me (been a while since I've had that feeling with tech). But another thing I've also got into recently, is wanting to add a server to my home (so I don't need to keep my main PC on to access files, also gonna have my plex server on it). While it's not set in stone, I'm thinking I want to use Windows Server, as Windows is what I know the most, would the installation of Home Assistant on Windows Server be the same as in this video? Thanks mate. :)
    Edit: Just looked at some of your other videos you have, guess I'm gonna be spending a bit of time watching your videos, great channel you have!

    • @fasthowto

      Thank you for the kind words! If you're going to use windows server, I would imagine you'll use hyper-V instead of virtualbox. I've not set that up before, but deploying the vm shouldn't be TOO different than this method, I wouldn't think.
      Let me know how things go, and I hope you find the rest of the videos useful! 😊

    Edit: NVM I fixed that issue but now I’m stuck on the prepping home assistant screen for over 30 minutes and when I click the blue dot to see what’s wrong it says that the DNS failed and it had to complete a system autofix. What should I do?

    • @fasthowto

      Unfortunately that will shut down the vm - at least in the default config. There may be a way to change that setting, but I honestly haven't messed with it too much. I only use the VirtualBox instance for my lab/test/videos, so whenever it's running I'm doing something with it.

    Great, concise video - thanks. Just about to buy a re-furb PC to get going in Home Asst. Once this is running in a Virtual Box on a pc does this mean that the pc is running Windows, AND running Linux HA at the same time? I thought that it was recommended that users buy an old PC with SSD, take the SSC out and "flash" over the Home Asst Linux over to this PC then that PC uses Linux for ever more and never runs windows (so no windows updates take place in the background)?

      Why did you switch from the old laptop to the 5070? I've got several old laptops here that are likely more powerful than the Home Assistant Blue I'm currently using. With the number of devices and automations and the complexity of my dashboard, I have begun to notice a slowdown in performance. Is there a reason others suggest using a Raspberry Pi over Windows? I already have a windows computer so this seems simpler. • @fasthowto
      @fasthowto  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I myself use a raspberry pi. The preferred method is actually to run it in some type of hypervisor, such as VirtualBox or VMware - but on a dedicated system that only hosts virtual machines. This is because it's easier to backup and restore a vm if you just make a copy of the file containing the entire thing, rather than trying to restore a backup from within the system. It's also easier to upgrade hardware since you just copy the file containing the vm onto the new system then. I created this video to give people a way to get into home assistant for free, so they could try it out using a computer they already had. Then if they find that they like it and want to stick with it, they can choose what type of hardware is best for their situation and invest in that.

A few other reasons I forgot to mention about why many people prefer RPIs over a dedicated pc or server are power consumption, noise, & heat. There are even more, but we're getting kind of into the weeds now. Maybe I'll do an episode about pros and cons of RPI vs pc or server.
