I recommend using an external library with the import path set to /import to upload an already exiting photo library. At the moment you cannot delete photos from an external library but if you're not worried about sorting through a photo library and more enamored with searching or sorting them like I am, this can be a easier solution.

I am very interested in running this at some point, but I think I'll keep holding off for now. I really want my image hosting to be pain free and reliable because when I decide to go and tackle the monolith of images everywhere, tagging and location fixing... I want it to be good to go for the future as well, regardless of if I end up having to import the library to another program at some point.
I do have an N100 mini PC that I'm not really using for anything so maybe I can go get my feet wet with testing some things out on that.

Great video as usual. Just one thing, I think the wait time in the docker list specifies how long to wait after the container is started, not before. So you'd need to change it on the Postgre docker instead of the Immich docker.

to get it working on my Server.
Maybe i downloaded a old immich version, or your postgres container is a little bit ahead of its time.
pg16 works for me, I’ve been using it for a few weeks now

I cant make it work.
With every other docker container, I use the swag autoproxy methoud without any trouble, but with immich I cant make it work. It just gives me "bad gateway" in cloudflare

The truth is that the tunnel is REALLY simple, but I would have liked to know why I cant reverse proxy it with swag.

You are using the proxy conf supplied in the swag container, correct?
In immich.subdomain.conf - you have to change the upstram port from 3001 to 8080 under both location directories.

I’ve seen people mention that Cloudflare has something like a 100mb file size limit. Is there anything in the phone app that can be set to chunk files if necessary? Thinking mainly videos taken on your phone.
Thanks for a great video. I’m curious of your opinion on using Immich versus Nextcloud for photo backup. Also does Immitch store the photo in original resolution?
That's my thought too - I'm wondering if you could somehow let them work together. I could import the pictures out of the Nextcloud storage, but then I have them two times on the server. I don't want to replace one with the other, as they both have their strengths.
You can import photos without using the CLI. You’d instead use the “external libraries” and you’d pick your watch folder and it’ll import them
Does it import into images own storage or just index the files to view them?

This feature seems much more useful than an actual import. Why would I want a second copy of my photos taking up more space on my server? Am I missing some downside here?
I'm using a really easy method to upload from my old server or from unraid itself,
I map a drive on my laptop to the old repo of pics
create an album
in the album, click upload then select From my Computer
navigate to the mapped drive and select all the photos in click go!
super easy! and fast since I'm on the same network

I just started using unraid a few months ago. As a new user your videos are very informative. Thank you for all your hard work.
My main goal of using unraid is to have a way to stop paying monthly fees for additional cloud storage for photos from my phone company.
I do not need to access/store photos while I am away from home. Is it necessary to pay for a domain in order to use immich?
My plan is to have the photos and videos on the phones of my family members save to my unraid server when they connect to the home wifi. Not including the cost of the server hardware, is there a way to back up my photos to immich in a way that is free or as cheap as possible yet secure? I am trying to escape monthly/yearly fees.

Thank you for the instructions as always! Would it be possible to use the mobile app uploading through a local network address? I have a vpn client set up on my router and would prefer tunneling in to my home network and moving away from having services accesible from the internet.

After the update today to immich version 1.100.0 it stopped working.
Checked the logs and it was not able to connect to Redis.
Not sure if the internal Redis has been deleted or not in this version, but I installed the official Redis container, changed the IP of Redis from "localhost" to the Redis container IP in the immich template/container and then it was back up running :)
Is there any chance you can make a video on backing up the Immich database? Turns out that is a complicated mess to do, need a tutorial.
Still watching for the first time, but I'll ask anyway. Can this be setup and told to use a network "share" from another machine/location. Say i want the photos to stay on my truenas box, or a synology box, or something like that, but immach needs to run on unraid.
Now that I have this up and running, although great, it is a tough ask to sacrifice basic crop and rotate edit functionality.
Totally agree. Its very early days for immich so i am sure it is something that will be coming in the future.

Any important data you should always have multiple copies. In more than one location IMO. Imagine that all your photos were only on your server and one day you came home and someone had broken in and stolen your compters? But of course i pray that never happens to you :)

They just released a new version of the docker container which contains version 2.1.0 of the CLI. Unraid didn't show it, but force update updated the container to the new version :)

What's the non cli way of importing photos? What if you put more photos in the import folder later, will Immich see them or do you manually have to import again?
Yea, that's also confusing for me... Surely there is an automated way to import photos and does it 'remember' previous imports?
If you see my part 3 video on immich-go. You could easily put the command in a userscript and set it to run every night. then whenever there are new photos in the location it would import them.
I used the installs from CA. HEIC imports aren't working. Did I do something wrong?
How big of a SQL and immich docker container size can I expect to see? My photo/video library is about 250gb and I don't want my docker SSD to run out of room.
So I already have Immich up and running but my server situation has now changed. I currently have Immich setup to look at an external hard drive as an external library, and also all my Immich photos are being uploaded to the same external hdd.
I have since upgraded my server and now want to migrate my Immich library into the server’s external library. Can I just drag and drop the directory onto a new Immich share and update the file location in the template? (I actually used a different version as I wasn’t aware of you and your videos when I spun it up- I know- crazy but I’m brand new).
I use next cloud do they have any adding for this? Or not really. I already run and use next cloud for my photo backups from my phone and other items
I'm willing to bet that you could use the Nextcloud photos folder as an "External Library" for Immich.
so when u mean by upload/copy, are you referring to symlinks? or a copy of the full file meaning you are storing double of the same pic on the same machine? which is it?
When you upload a file to Immich it makes a copy of that file into the location where Immich stores its pictures. So yes if you still had the pictures in the source you would now have 2 copies. It doesnt use harlinking or symlinks.
However if you want it just to see the photos you have and not use it to upload photos etc. You can add an external library and Immich will be able to see that. So maybe you would prefer using the external library option as opposed to using Immich's primary "upload" library.
How does the folder structure work? If one has photos in folders then is it a case if upload folder by folder? Would be nice if theres an option to customise the folder structure on upload.
When you upload it is structured by date. You can make albums in Immich and tag any photos you want in any album. The same photo can be in multiple albums. Also with tools like immich-go (see my other vid) you can make albums during the upload
Sorry if this was already answered or implied otherwise. Like onestop, I already have a pics share with many folders that represent albums. I can't point the Path: /photos in the immich container to that share and it would auto-magically add everything?
I have a query to you. I have an unraid server with 64gb non-ECC ram and xeon 10core cpu. I stored around 15tb photos on there. When I enter on those folders, it works slow and most of the time it stuck. Not smooth takes long time to lode. Will you please suggest me what is the problem and how I can solve it?

Then once you’re done, run those jobs to gather the data

I installed the immich docker on my unraid server and after I was done I got a popup message saying something along the line of "The password you just used has been identified in a data breah and Google recommends you change it. My guess is that it was related to the default postgres password and I assume that won't matter since it is safe on our server but I did want to ask here to make sure that it isn't something else I should be concerned with. Thanks.
Immich docker compose file shows that they are using ps14 not ps16.
External libraries will add photos to your immich instance where they currently reside without making a copy of them.

Is there is no option to use the existing photos library without importing and having another copy? That is sort of a deal breaker as I already have lots of backups. I was hoping just to scan my photos and index them.
You can use “external libraries”. This option doesn’t copy the originals to Immich folder but just scans the folders and makes thumbs and transcoded videos (if exist). Immich doesn’t modify any files (assets) in external libraries so all your existing backup can be safe.
@@kimi4553 Thank you. But if I then either edit or delete a photo in Immich will it then do it or synch it to the original as I usually edit and delete phone photos though the web version of Google photos as I hate working on the phone.
@@JoeAnshien immich only works with external libraries in read only mode. So you can’t delete any external assets from your timeline. The only way to hide some media from external libraries to mark them as archived.
The real pain for me with external libraries is incorrect date of some assets. Have no idea how to fix this.

No problem based on users having 200k-500k photos.
As an example I have 90k mixed media files and it runs beautifully. You may want to limit the cores for immich though as it took 3 days to process the library and it will take all the resources available to it.

I got gpu ML working.

Be sure to install the gpu statistics pulgin so you can confirm usage. Also, watch the logs when you set the cuda variable. It takes much longer for the container to boot up because of all the cuda and python nonsense it has to pull. Cheers.
So? I have an existing unraid photo share (750 gigs)......can I not simply point Immich to that folder and use Immich? Unless I am missing something I have to create another share and have Immich basically duplicate my existing photo share?
That was my question, too. It seems like you can point to an external library, but you cannot manage/delete photos using external directories.
Nice, but I'm on the fence. If you value your photos and vids, you also need offsite backups.
Very true. You must have backups for sure. But in my opinion that goes for when you use cloud services for photos too. Thats just one location. Precious data should be in 3 separate places :)

Great video! Has anyone been able to get Immich to work with nginx/swag reverse proxy? I have a number of other Docker containers working just fine through reverse proxy but Immich is being stubborn. I've added the CNAME record on my domain, edited the config file with the subdomain, container name is correct, but I keep getting 502 Bad Gateway. Any ideas?

I installed Immich, following your instructions. Thanks. However, it seems that Immich doesn't let the cache drive rest. I can hear the drive move about once per second for just a moment. After stopping the immich docker, the cache drive stops. After starting it, the drive chirps about once per second. Any idea how to stop it from doing this?
If you just uploaded a bunch of pictures chances are the different jobs are still running (Thumbnails, Smart Search, Face Detection, etc). This would probably cause the cache drive to run. Click administration and then jobs and see if anything is running.

dump.rdb is updated at the same time as this log file.
This is a bit off topic but I am having issues getting the internet speed in my Win 10 VM to match the UnRaid speeds. I don't know where it gets bottle-necked at. And thank you so much for your very well done tutorials on putting together the VMs You have by far the best and most understanding ones out there

You missed the machine learning bit to enable face detection....
By default it uses cpu to detect faces. It's pretty fast on the CPU from my 70k library. No configuration needed!

I had to turn on the storage template else it just keeps files in the upload folder and its not sorted in an human logical way.

I set up my iPhone to back up my photos to my immich on Unraid... but it puts each photo in its own separate folder, thus creating kind of a mess. Does anyone know how you can set it to just put all your backup iPhone pics into a single folder?

You need to look into setting up an external library. That will leave the files in their existing position but be able to see them in immich.

yep you can add different users and the files are separate but you can share albums between the users or externally
The immich site has instructions for the recommended way to install immich on unraid. Why not do it that way?
Using docker compose is a great way to install. I choose this way for the tuturial however as its easier for people I think. Especially as compose isnt built into Unraid. and needs a plugin.
Immich is now just missing a good 2FA authentication for be 100% perfect
You can protect all your services with 2FA with NGINX+Authentik. I got mine working yesterday, and it will force you to authenticate before redirecting to IMMICH. Just an idea.
Immich looks decent, but its fundamental issue is that it's looking at Google Photos as a design guideline, and Google Photos sucks. Looking at Lightroom (non-editing), Apple Photos and of course Flickr, among others, for "best in class" features and UI/UX would put it on a better track. I'd avoid looking at anything from Google at all.
Absolutely, I get where you're coming from. Immich's still pretty much in its infancy, and I'm really hoping that as it develops further, we'll witness it branching out rather than sticking too closely to being a Google Photos lookalike. It's early days yet, so fingers crossed we'll see some exciting developments that steer it in a more unique direction.
You don't install Redis. Is it not needed???
What about different users? Haow to configure different user for example my family at home? It safe the files inndifferent folders, can I share pictures between users in the same server...????
