Thank-You for your service to our country sir, and welcome home. Just bought my first 660 Magnum Stihl chainsaw after running the MS 290/291 for twenty years, nice to finally move up in the world!
Those saws are cutting beasts. Good to see a vet getting some appreciation. They really deserve all the appreciation that they can get!

I've just bought a new 395xp. Man what a beast! Doesn't complain even with a 28 inch bar and cutting full length. Love it.

Yes I have a couple 395xps one with a 32 and a 28 inch bars. My 242 xps with a full chisel chain and a 24 inch bar cuts faster than than what I've seen. Been climbing and cutting trees for over 35 years and a I am no fan of over kill but what I've witnessed is old lazy guys who dont want to field sharpen long bars a 20 inch bar and this is an average for me anyway is about 15 minutes for a 20 inch and 30 minutes for a 32 inch bar give or take a few minutes depend on how bad a chain is.
It was great seeing Mr. Larry again, that's cool Tim that he can come out and share his knowledge

Most of my saws have 20 inch bars because longer bars create a balance problem - they become nose heavy and I hate nose heavy bars. I put a 24 inch bar on my ms 440 and it would stay on its nose on a level work bench. It now has a 20 inch Total laminated bar on it. It is a completely different saw, now. It is nice to see you have a Vietnam vet on your channel. I am one, too, a US Marine, type.

You got that right Tim. Big saw, big timber and extreme heat is a deadly combination for anyone a death sentence for someone in bad physical shape. Never mind putting in a 12-hour day six days a week. Hydrate, hydrate and hydrate. Get in the shade when possible and keep an eye on each other. Heat stroke will kill you quickly if you’re not careful.
A tough job for sure.

Finally somebody who knows what they are talking about, we never put a long bar on a saw, 24" and we throw trees 5 ft. around. Heavier and more teeth to file.
Here is an example. Ms880 max RPM is 11,000. Ms390 is 13,000. Assuming that both have an 18" bar, wouldnt that make it slower/heavier/more gas to run the big saw? Why would you spin a crank that big to only use 50% of the intended torque? Also, more teeth means less wood cut per tooth, so the less sharpening theory doesnt really add up.
This kind of logic makes no sense to me. Why carry around a big heavy power head when it is only carrying a 20" bar? Much smaller saws can handle a 20 inch bar!

I run a 395 husqvarna for years and it was only a 24 inch bar and I wouldn't run anything else after using it!! Awsome saw!!
I run a 28'' on my 372xp. A 20'' on a 555/562xps and 550xp. Long bars do serve their purpose. I would hate to tackle a gnarly 3 foot white pine with a 20'' bar... you got to be able to feel your hinge wood... especially when doing residential work.

I got A new Stihl it’s light & cuts good and I got 29 yr old Husqvarna it weighs A ton but cuts awesome that thing screams it revs so high 😂

Back in the day, ran a lot of big saws such as 1100, 1200, 289, 394, 395, 3120, Husky. 075, 090 stihl. Still have a few around. Real nice big saw vidja. And hey, I would like to salute that good ole Nam, vet.
I love my Stihls. 391 660 and even 290. I ocasionally still run my 090 for stuff over 4ft. But 660 and 661 with 24 inch is my everyday cutters.

Our family logged for decades. We ran Pioneer until they went out of business. We got a couple Stihl and wasn't impressed. Then we got a Husqvarna it was a good saw but expensive. Then we learned that Johnsonred was basically the same as a Husqvarna but cheaper we went with them. None of them was as tough as a Pioneer P52.

Great vid love the husky saw I'm running a 272xp 24" I'm 57yr old cut fire wood in the winter I can cut n split n stack a face cord in 45 min by my self with a split maul the young kids theses days it would take them over 2 hrs

I run a 20” bar on one of my 372xp for any felling work and limbing work, it eats and runs on that saw very well. It truly is the most well rounded bar size for the bigger saws. I also run a 32” bar on my other 372xp but it has been ported/polished and muffler modded so she runs it really well but that’s a saw I used strictly for bucking up and cutting fire wood for! as a Infantry Combat Vet i agree running a saw relaxes me and just helps put me in a good place in my mind so i understand that part of it. however would def prefer the stihl. actually a ms 661 but def Stihl.

I use stihl 661 32 inch bar. You can do anything with the tip with any saw and bar size if you just hold it real tight when tipping. Fast reflexes also help for if it catchs a limb and kicks when its not expected.
Back in the 70's I ran a modified 2100 Husky. It was a beast until I let a friend use it, who dropped a tree on it. In the late 90's I bought the 395 XP. It cut good, but nothing like that 2100.
Great video! Love your action shots, that heart rate monitor was great! Running a 395 is fun, mine got stolen ,I miss it so much, with a 28. “ bar and a skip tooth that saw was incredible. Now I have to use my pair of 372xps for everything....added a 550xp to my list of saws,I absolutely love the 550xp what a great little saw!
I've got both 660 and 390xp. Both kick ass. I feel the 660 has a touch more bottom end grunt, ie, torque, but the Husky 390 has more topened and runs a little better with more revs than the Stihl. It will get through thick wood faster. The stihl feels like it is a little more forgiving on the bottom end when you trying to grunt through a pinch spot. Both awesome, but at the end of the day, I feel like I can run a Husky of the same size a little bit longer without fatigue. The Stihl seems to "buzz" my arms and cause hand fatigue faster. Just my personal experience. Did alot of climbing and saw work when I was young a dumb. I liked stihls when I was off the ground, and Husky when I had my feet ont he ground.

Mr. Tim, Here on the west coast, I run a 42 inch bar on my 395. I know the hardwoods slow down a chain much more than a Douglas Fir but wouldn’t it still be faster than making two cuts on the butt? I’m sure there is a good reason as to why you don’t use a bigger bar, Just wondering ...

I buck logs like that 10 hours a day with limbs and branches that have to be removed. Stihl 661c 32 inch bar ,couldn’t do my job with a 20 inch bar,the fallers use 36 inch bars. West Coast ,British Columbia,Canada
Dan Hutchings I run my 066 with either a 32or a 36 inch bar,You can go up to a 42 inch on these saws. I’ve had to rip 7 ft spruce logs with an 088 or a 3120 and a 72 inch bar,too heavy to fly with the skycrane so we had to do lots of ripping on the hill

Now I am no expert but I have cut a few trees down. Saws are I think pure preference. You are rite tho Tim, Huskys do turn I think a higher RPM than a Stihl. I have nothing but Stihl saws. I have run Huskys before, but I don't like some things about those saws, they turn so fast, when you get into a piece of petrified locust, it just jumps around. Both are great saws, you can definitely get the job done with either. Even can go old style, and break out the old Homelite 1050 if you are really feeling like you need a work out.

Tim, the biggest saw I ever owned was a Husqvarna 268 xp. That thing kicked like a mule. if you were bucking a log and the tip of the bar caught a twig, it was going where it wanted. Great Video and please thank Mr. Larry for his service for me.
I'm just starting out logging but its something I truly love to do my uncle Larry been cutting for 45 years he's 61 years old and can out work most young men I'm 27 and barely can keep up. yea it takes a man to cut

I have a stihl 66 with a 32 inch bar, mostly used for ripping lumber, but i use it for huge logs also.

Soft wood can be a challenge now and again sometimes I bust out the homelite and the cross cut

I got away from the 395s, had a few issues like antivib mounts n shit. No problems with stihl after a few thousand hours a each year. I've got two 661s normally run 25", I run a good ol 660 with 36" bar on the mill. I try to buy a new saw each season but havnt kill one yet. Cheers

Poplar logs were likely used for interior trim boards. Large logs are also used for plywood core of premium cabinet plywood.
Waiting, waiting, waiting.... for the Stihl to catch up. Let's be fair, 24" bar, 3/8" .058" chain on both, THEN let's see what happens. I own a 395XP fitted with that combo. fell all day with it, never seen a 660 come close to matching it.
my ported 660 runs right beside a muffler modded 395. out of the box, the 395 whoops on the 660
Larry is a amazing man. I use to run a 084 Stilh with a 72iin bar. Loved it. Hated starting it though. Especially when the compression release didn't work!
The chain on the STIHL is sharp !!!

Bar length is debatable. Short bars dont bend as easy.but have fewer teeth. Depends alot on the work. If you cut pulp wood a short bar is all you need. But a long bar will run longer between sharpening. What i cut is fire wood left by big timber logers. All oak varieties, cherry, ash,and some locusts. Occasionally some huge hard and water maples. All well seasoned. I like a 3 foot bar for most of what i do. But i do have a 18" on a 54cc saw with me also. A Remington cast aluminium 1960 model with a roller nose. Heavy but it mostly sets anyway. Good demo thanks for sharing.

Man finally someone running 20" on their big saw. I hate running the big bar. I run a couple 390xp's I like the power to weight ratio. And the 395 you have to pull the drum to change the sprocket, 390 you dont. Makes it handy to switch a 32" with a 7 tooth from a 20" with a 8 tooth and back again.
This chain saws (Stihl 660 and Husqvarna 395) looks for a longer bar, especially for to cut this giants. Best wishes from Spain

I ran a woods ported 395 husky with a 36" bar for 7 straight years falling timber in the Pacific northwest before I decided to retire the saw. Never rebuilt, only did regular maintenance and always used ethanol free fuel.
Heavy, but a very durable and reliable saw. Way more stump power than the 066. Those extra 4ccs go a long way.
I own an 880 Stihl and a 3120 XP Husky - the two biggest of each company. I can tell you for a fact; the 880 is 1.5 pounds lighter and has noticeably more torque than the Husky. I like them both but in the SouthEast where the wood is hard and wet - Im going with the torque not the RPM. Both are good saws - but who woudn't go for the lighter saw with more power.
Ive said this before so it needs to be mentioned again; there is not one video of cutters in the Amazon, Africa, or Asia cutting with Huskys ; there is a reason for this : the wood is much harder and has a much higher specific gravity than US woods; all you see is the 090's made by Stihl.
And to boot - the clutch being on the outside of the bar can be a pain to deal with.
That stuff is soft !! Better come down under for some hard wood !! That will test the saws !! Good workers . Great team

391 is awesome. I had a 360 that was a flat out mean machine, but the damn oiler lines would melt daily. wtf.
Cotontop You would love my 084 with the 3' bar or my 090 with the 6' bar... I could listen to that buzz all day but I had better get my butt to work, Sun is comin' over the hills.
