  • This video is not meant to be a comprehensive list, or an in depth discussion as to exactly what a pattern is or isn’t, but a quick overview of several of the amazing patterns opal from Ethiopia can display.

You are putting real and useful info out here. Thank you again! I have many non-hydrophane stones from Welo, Shewa (Mezezo) and a few from the Stayish mine and the info on storage and cutting practices are just not readily available. Wish I understood the Ethiopian language because there are many videos that describe cutting and working with this Opal on TH-cam. I’ve seen many but I glean very little from them!

I’ve come across some other interesting patterns in Ethiopian opal over the past few years, including one stone with script pattern. I recently saw a super interesting variant of honeycomb in the form of leopard spotted opal that had spots inside of circles of contrasting colors. Blew me away. I wish I could jump into the lapidary scene. I have a ton of respect for anyone willing to put the work in to learn a new skill.

Yeah that leopard ringed stone was amazing! 29ct rub, but if it is being cut down into a stone it will probably come out around 14ct, if it wasn’t sold with water weight in it.

@@heaveninearthopals3855: Of course you know exactly the stone I meant! That piece was a rare duck indeed. It’ll probably haunt many an opal lover’s daydreams for years to come. I’ve scoured the web for any similar stones, not because I’m hoping to buy one ($2500 was too rich for my blood, although it’s worth every penny and then some). I simply love looking at them even if it’s just photos. I hope it will be cut down though. I’m a man who can appreciate some thickness, but as it was sold it’s ass wasn’t doing it any favors.
As far as WoT goes, I have the sigil inked on my back (the wheel, spear, trefoil leaf, banner combo). That series has seen me through my loftiest heights and my lowest lows over many years (I’m a bit of an old ass). Like most fans who read long series as the books come out, I’ve read and reread them far too many times each time a new volume was released in order to re-familiarize myself with the details I’d forgotten (and also just because I love reading them). My heart broke when Robert died (and again when the Prime series came out 😑), but Brandon did an amazing job bringing it home… although I’m sure that getting tons of continuing praise for THAT when he has an epic body of original work has to be a bit frustrating.
I’m sorry. I’m rambling. It’s just a trip to find someone who shares both of those passions. I’ll shut up now even though it’s long overdue. I’m subscribing right now. Hope to see more of your work soon. Deyeniye, dyu ninte concion ca’lyet ye.

@@______IV same here! Would LOVE to recut that, and turn it into something wearable or a gem vs a rub.
I love it! Have you noticed that everyone who stops the series partway through stops at book 6 or 7? I know 4 people who gave the series an honest try and that’s where every one of them stopped.

@@heaveninearthopals3855 : I HAVE noticed that since I’ve recommended it to far too many people😬. To be fair to those people though, the books do get a bit bloated from book 4 to 7. Now I don’t mind one bit because longer books mean I got to immerse myself in the world that much longer, but I can understand that some people might get a TEENSY BIT frustrated the ten thousandth time Jordan described in detail the clothes people wear, the same people’s personality affects, or his deep dives into the world’s history and politics. To me that stuff is all icing on the cake, but I’m a freak so I don’t fault the people who couldn’t deal with it.
I knew any attempt at turning the series into watchable media would have to be a series, because there was simply way too much to cram into movies, but I was so bummed when I watched what Amazon did to it. I have always believed the only way to do it justice is a big budget animated series, but for that reason I expected it would never be made. But Amazon…ugh. They were so concerned about it being seen as a young teen series that they turned it into a soap opera. Perrin married & killing his wife, all the MCs being aged up into their 20s, Matt being made into a thief, a 4’ too short Loial, the 1990s quality CGI, Moiraine being almost as tall as Lan, etc. BUT… I guess if it brings more people to the books then it’s a success on that level.

@@______IV I’m one of the hold outs that refuses to watch the series because it’s like looking at an ugly distorted painting of my beautiful wife. That series is where I go when I’m happy, when I’m sad, when I’m bored, when I’m overwhelmed… it’s my home in a way
