Opal patterns from Australia explained

  • Welcome to Black Opal Direct!
    Australian opal is a unique gemstone; no two are ever the same.
    So, of course, that makes understanding and valuing opal a pretty darn hard task.
    After my video on valuing opal, a lot of you asked for a better look at opal patterns.
    An opals pattern has a significant impact on its value; some patterns don't add much to the value whereas others are so rare the price can go through the roof.
    In this video, we'll take a look at some of our stock so that you can see how I identify patterns.
    We'll chat about some of the most known, like Moss and Flagstone pattern, as well as a couple of show stoppers, like Pin-fire and Striated pattern.

    Justin, you are a hoot! I literally laughed out loud when you said, "Is that a pattern, or are you just happy to see me." Not only do you show your artistry with the stones you cut and polish, but you educate your audience. Thank you for educating me. I thoroughly enjoy it.

    Hi Justin, I'd love an updated "pattern video." I know you probably feel like you have talked about it to death (and made a few videos) but I love seeing different examples. And, throw in the kitchen sink: feather, harlequin, chaff, script pattern, and whatever that one is that radiates from the middle. Always love your content!

    One of my favorites to date has several starbursts of color which look like their firework namesake.
    one green, one red, one orange, and one yellow.
    The best part is when the stone is tilted side to side, the little fireworks of color burst one after another till all are visible.
    Unfortunately, due to the thin color bar, it cannot be domed, and must remain flat.

    Just beautiful! I'm guessing what your showing is what is called retirement gem opals set back for retirement when your ready to retire. I'm very sure what you've shown is just a very few you've set back for yourself. It would be amazing to see all the gem opals you have saved for such a time but then I'd kinda worry what type of person would see your gorgeous collection and have bad intentions in witch case I wouldn't blame you for not showing one bit. But still I'd love to see them. Again just beautiful gem's you have. Thanks for the education on patterns.

    The flagstone pattern is my favorite (of what you have shown so far.) It's hard to choose because they're all beautiful. The play of color is mesmerizing. Do you have a favorite pattern? I understand the girl's screaming. Our hero to the rescue! When I lived in Arizona I saw some monster sized ones. Stay safe and well.

    I suspect that when in doubt, a good black and white photo or video of the stone would help. In general nature photography B&W really helps to eliminate the color confusion to bring forward the patterns that are present. That is one reason that B&W photography is still in demand. In the hands of an expert it can make for striking compositions. In this case it would just be a tool in the toolbox to help focus on pattern instead of having color add confusion.

    I was curious about the first stone you showed for the flagstone example
    I noticed the potch (?like the grey cracks that go through to make it look like marble to an extent) and was curious whether that’s classified as a certain type of opal? I get they are both flagstone, but was a bit confused as to why the first flagstone had such thick cracks through it?
    Awesome video!

    • @blackopaldirect
      @blackopaldirect  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The cracks are not crack they are segmented lines between the color. It is potch that formed there naturally but does devalue the gem somewhat. Sometimes the lines can enhance the look of an opal but in this case not

    • @sarahhjenn
      @sarahhjenn 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Black Opal Direct ah ok! I was thinking it was potch, wasn’t too sure! Thank you :-)
      So that doesn’t make it a matrix opal does it? It looks similar to some I’ve seen that I thought were labelled a matrix opal, but maybe it’s just because they have a flagstone type pattern I’m mixing it up with

    This episode highlights why opal is so fascinating. Diamonds are dull in comparison despite the obvious value. 4:10 could this stone be described as a harlequin flagstone? Also the gem at 1:32. That’s a nebula or galaxy pattern! To call it grass or Moss pattern is just selling it short!
