Ethiopian Opal For DUMMIES - All you Need to know!

  • For the first time ever on TH-cam, I give detailed information about Ethiopian Welo opal, including an extensive demonstration of how to cut it in order to get the best color and appearance. I also show that Ethiopian opal is “hydrophane,” which is opal that absorbs water and essentially becomes clear, only to revert back to normal upon drying. I provide detailed information about cracks and how to avoid them. I compare Ethiopian Welo opal to different types of opal from around the world, including Australian opal, Brazilian opal, Honduran opal and Mexican opal. The quality of Welo opal is demonstrated and a comparison with other opal types, including Lightning Ridge Black opal and others is provided. In addition, I set the world's record for Rubik Cube.

I'm too poor to own nice Australian opal, so I bought a couple Welo opals online. I could (and do, don't judge) stare at them for hours. The patterns in some of them are just incredible! I literally keep one or two of them in my pocket so I can take them out and look at them in various lighting conditions throughout the day.

Village Smithy Opal was the first place I bought opal rough from, about 15 years ago, I still have a handful of the stones I cut from it, mostly Australian rough but I managed to find a few really nice stable pieces of Ethiopian Welo opal from some of his lots too. The most stable Welo I cut was the dark-base brown, almost never developed cracks after I was finished cutting, but hard to find larger pieces that don't come out of the ground cracked from the mining process. I had a couple true black Welo stones, but every one of them cracked on me despite being on healthy black potch, so it wasn't just the crystal opal crazing on me. I even keep the cracked and crazed ones in my 'asylum' pile, a couple of them look nice with the crazing sparkling on the surface with the color so they're still fun to look at and collect.

Over 30 years ago, when I was living in Germany, I bought a Welo opal from a dealer in stones/crystals who came regularly to the New Age book shop in Hamburg (Buchhandlung Wrage) where I was working at the time. As I was in charge of purchasing stones/crystals for the shop, I always got first peek - and first pick. When he came in one day and showed me a small handfuls of Welo opals, my eyes lit up - opal has been my favorite stone since I was a child visiting the Museum of Natural History in NYC with my parents and being fascinated by their incredible crystal exhibition. So I chose a rough stone with a stunning depth of color; looking at it was like falling into a rainbow. Since then it has accompanied me all over the world, sometimes wrapped carefully in a little box, sometimes on a shelf in a little ceramic bowl. But I never found a way to actually wear it, until I began taking jewellery classes last year. I was determined to find a way to create a piece of jewellery with my beautiful Welo. Then I found a short documentary about opal mining in Ethiopia, and when I saw how/where this was done, I had an idea: to create a setting for the opal that would be like the rock it was found in! It took me weeks to get it right, but I carved a wax setting for a ring that reflects the rock structures the opal was mined from, had it cast in sterling silver, and set my precious opal with it. The ring is heavy and quite a knuckle duster, but the irregularly formed opal sits beautifully protected in it. I always have it on my night table and love watching the colors shimmer in the light. I wear it with delight and it is much admired. This is the documentary that inspired my ring: th-cam.com/video/9ljrGyk8ctc/w-d-xo.html
