How to read numbers on abacus

Abacus addition.
Easy steps to perform abacus addition for beginners.
How to add numbers on abacus?
I will explain with an example:
Take 3+2
Step 1: Place the first number ( Here 3 ) on the abacus.
Step 2: Here, the next number is 2, Check whether there are
enough beads below the divider or not.
Step 3: If there are enough beads add them directly.
For example: 2 + 1
Place 2 on the abacus
We have to add 1
We see we have enough beads
Add them directly.
Step 4: Here we have to add 2
And we do not have enough beads on the abacus.
So to perform abacus addition a small concept is required
They are , SMALL FAMILY
Rules are simple
5 is the boss
Numbers include 1 2 3 4 5
Its easy 1 + 4 = 5 ------------ 4 is the friend of 1
2 + 3 = 5 ------------ 3 is the friend of 2
3 + 2 = 5 ------------ 2 is the friend of 3
4 + 1 = 5 ------------ 1 is the friend of 4
Step 5: Check who is the friend of the second number.
Here the number is 2.
Step 6: Focus here,
Place 5 on the abacus
Step 7: Remove the friend of the number
Here we are adding 3 + 2 on abacus
Friend of 2 is 3
So,
Remove the friend 3 from the abacus.
Similarly, the process of adding two numbers on abacus is same and easy, It requires practice to perform abacus addition quick and accurate.

I always wondered about Abacus but never got a chance to learn...when my elder son was in primary school, for name's sake the school started Abacus, but never taught him anything and he ended up in a mess.. Now my younger son is in the same situation, and I decided to learn it myself and teach him too in case the school messes it up again. Many tutorials starts up well but never go beyond basics of counting. This is the only tutorial which is systematically teaching basics and at least started teaching adding...I'm continuing to be a student now...I'm almost 45 years old, competing with 8 year olds.... I better learn Abacus now rather than dying in the suspense of what Abacus is on my death bed...there is no age for learning...Thanks Pranaii for teaching the young and the old ...Thank you so much...

As a kid I always used to rank first in class but was never the best in maths and my speed maths was the weakest but during PTM when my parents asked my teachers what can be done to improve my skills they only said to study reference books and learn abacus/chess. But they never suggested the name of those books. So I suffered a lot later in my life. 😢Thank for making this TH-cam channel.

Abacus formulas for addition
+9=+10-1(I mean add one in ten's place and minus 1 from unit's place in abacus kit)
+8=+10-2
+7=+10-3
+6=+10-4
+5=+10-5
+4=10-6
+3=+10-7
+2=+10-8
+1=+10-9
These are the formulas learnt in my academy,

Thank you for making these videos. They have be very helpful so far in learning the basics of using the abacus. The beads on your abacus seem to have a nice tension to the rod so that they don't move if the abacus is simply bumped on accident. I am wondering who makes the model you are using and where can it be purchased?

It is a normal Abacus. But you should always keep it on a table/flat surface so that beads don't move unnecessarily.
