    I'm 59 years old and I have been a MOPAR fanatic since I was a teenager. The nicest MOPAR that I've owned was a '69 Dart GT 340 with a 904 tranny and it was sweet, but I was a Slant Six enthusiast back when it wasn't cool. Years ago I read an article in Hot Rod Magazine and a German engineer was asked what he thought was the best engine ever built, and his response was the Chrysler Slant Six! Let's face it folks, that engine is just about bullet proof. The featured Duster is a sharp car, but the '66 Baracuda Fastback really got my attention!

    In my opinion, for what it's worth, the Slant MoPar Six is probably the most "bulletproof" engine ever produced! You just Can't kill it!!!!!! MoPar or no car

      Not quite. I had a 1972 Dodge Dart with a 225 Slant Six, and when it came to me it was already burning oil very badly. I had the engine replaced by a local repair shop with a Sears catalog rebuilt long block. After that, and with perhaps more regular oil changes under my care, it was reliable. The rear axles were not, as I kept breaking them over and over again.

      I only ever had the 1 225 in a 67vc valiant wagon, it had been to the moon and back and still it drove beautifully. Then I gave it to my clown mate,.....

      I bought a 69 dart back in 2006 for $900 American bucks with a slant 6. Ran on 5 cylinders but it was somehow dependable-ish. Long story short I took a gamble taking it to Mexico from California for an entire weekend! I depended on my Mopar pride and it didn't let me down with a burnt valve. But to be honest I do feel stupid for doing that. Girlfriend at the time just bought a new civic and didn't want to risk theft in Mexico on that new Honda I guess. So we risked it in a half ass car I bought 2 weeks earlier that ran on 5 out of 6 cyl

    You sir are my hero... I have a big soft spot in my heart for the mighty leaning tower of power 225 Slant-Six... The 70 Challanger I drove has a factory stock 225 and would get over 30 mph, and still smoke the Goodyear wrapped Cragars with ease.

    Back in the '70s there were no "special" parts for the slant-six, you made whatever you had work or you made it in your garage. They were very torquey engines, however, my best quarter mile was a lowly 13:36 at just about 110MPH, w/ a four-speed tranny - traction was a big issue w/ the crappy tires of the day. Everyone would laugh at me when I'd get to the drag strip, but quickly stopped laughing when I beat them and their V8s w/ my completely balanced slant-six w/ its 4.125" stroke and hand-ported heads w/ 1.72 ratio roller-tip rockers. Lots of time spent w/ a die grinder, before final assembly. Loved the sound of that six banger w/ the "modified" stock manifolds and home-built headers connected to glass pack mufflers and exiting out the side, just in front of the rear tire. Sweet music to my teenage ears.

      Actually Clifford Performance (6=8) started selling performance parts for the slant six in 1969. Intakes, exhausts, cams etc. were all availably by the early 70s and their line continued to expand. I purchased my 198-powered ‘72 Duster in 1980, installed the dual long tube headers and a two-barrel intake manifold with “big” Holley, mild cam, flexible fan and early efi ignition. No idea how much power it added but it was a lot more fun to drive.
      Also, Mopar Performance had some hipo parts starting in the ‘60s, I remember the HyperPac intake, cam and maybe more, but Clifford had a bigger selection of parts and was cheaper when I was looking.
      The video car is of course stellar. And BTW, using Wallace’s ET calculator the ET and mph quoted in the video are right in line with 600 hp. Regardless of the actual hp, I’m sure it’s a blast to drive at the strip!

    great story ! my first car was also a 71 slant 6 plymouth duster ; mine was a low budget model mine had the 198 slant six with the dreaded 3spd standard shift on the column ; i bought mine with money i made from a paper route ; it also had the bench seat which i cut a small notch in the center of the bench in order to put a hurst floor shift in ; it sure was a great handling car and comfortable to ride in ;;; my biggest complaint was the 3speed standard on the column that was always getting stuck between gears ;; i took it to the dealer to get it rebushed and it worked great for about a month and the trouble started all over again ;;; i was in high school dating at the time and i paid 400 dollars for it i miss and love that car but the frame rusted away ; i purchased the shark tooth grille for mine also ; really looked nice ;; good luck with your car it really looks nice !!!!

    I bought my brothers 70 duster slant 6 auto, radio delete plate and "factory" add on underdash AC! I do was planning the big block swap. It had over 250K on it at the time. The reason I got it was he was trading it in and the dealer only offered him $300. I said (mind ya I had too many cars & bikes already) I'll give ya 500, right now! Did the deal on friday nite and on Saturday an acquaintance came over to look at a different car and falls in love with the duster. Who wouldn't? Body & paint were great, interior was good. Ran and drove ok. Dude! I gotta have it. Gave him a price to scare him off...$1500. "SOLD!" crap, should have gone higher.
    Well that's when things went south. Engine blew, he was pissed. I was a jerk for everything. All because I thought I could help my brother and my acquaintance...cars.

  • @shorty808100
    @shorty808100 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    You build a small block V8 right and put a pro charger on it, it’s gonna make way more than 900Hp *( I’ve seen twin/compound turbo Honda, Toyota and Mitsubishi 4 bangers making over 1500Whp and run in the 6’s at 260 mph in the 1/4 then there’s Toyota’s straight six well there’s 2 the 1Jz and the 2Jz you can make 2000+Whp with those and go fast as hell )* I had a N/A 350 back on 1989 that was making a little over 1000whp *( NHRA Dyno’d it once on a protest to find out if I really was running NoS or not they could simulate a 1/4 mile run with there dyno and get the time from it which matched my on track times )* , for IHRA tracks I had a 500HP NoS kit and 3 15lb bottles of NoS in my trunk at my disposal, I miss being able to build a cheap bracket car from a junkyard car/engine and rear end now it’s gotta be all tube chassis all aftermarket everything nothing you use to build you race car and I mean nothing can be from a car that had a vin stupid clean air act, or you gotta buy a factory drag car that will run 7.9 at 180mph in the 1/4 they range from $112-144k they don’t have a cheaper slower version like say a bone stock car with just one race seat an 8 point roll cage it could be say a 10 sec quarter car that you could buy for around $15-20k for the bracket racers that aren’t 1%ers on the income scale although I could build a nice funny car style Pro car for about $20k or less myself if I wanted to make it a pro stock or top sportsman about $30-35k dunno if I wanna do a car/truck or a dragster if I do a car/truck I wanna do something stupid like a pinto or a little chevy Luv pickup or maybe a Chevy Monza Spyder with a stroker 427 SBC should look nice between the frame rails and make tons of power N/A or supercharged, if I wanna run NoS I’ll have to change my pistons to 8-1 from the 15 or 16-1 ones I’ll be running with the blower

    If you ever decide to do something like this again get in conact with "CLIFFORD AIR RESEARCH." I am not certain they still make it new, but I do know that they made an intake manifold and pulleys to install a 4-71 "GMC PUFFER" on just about any 6 cylinder, including both of the "LEANING TOWERS OF POWER." Oh yeah they also made them fffeeerrrddds & shooooovies.

      His quarter mile trap speed would have to be 134 mph to have 600 horsepower I would say he is probably in the 120 mph trap speed for that ET of 10:56. That car is probably around 3200 pounds with driver if you add it all up it's not over 450 horsepower no matter what the so called Dyno sheet says sorry to bust bubbles but 600 horsepower out of any old school straight six isn't going to happen just bolting on a turbo or supercharger easier with the turbo though than the supercharger and possible with a turbo with a ton of boost but not with this car and it's supercharger nice car but it's definitely not 600 horsepower not even close.
