Enjoyed the video. I'm no drag expert but kinda sounds like the converter might be looser than the rpm/power range of the engine right now? Or down on engine power significantly from where you were. Didn't seem like there was ever much unloading as it pulled through the gears on the trip down just the constant speed of the engine. Fluid smell burned any?
You will figure it out no doubt. Glad you are now focusing on track testing Plan Z. Possibly its a bad coil that is breaking down under load and this would screw up the airfuel mixture in the combustion chamber during the weak spark. This might explain also the misfire during the initial burnout.
Hot damn! That’s a mean sounding slant! Yeah, under load it’s struggling. I’m leaning towards fuel air delivery or something with converter/trans. Revs great when not under load, so that difference is key.
That’s hot rodding….. we’ll said 👍🏻. I noticed in the first test , the rear tire stopped spinning during the burnout. Could the rear end be on the way out ?? Just a wild guess , it’s probably nothing. Can’t wait to see the slanty run again 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Tony I know you consider yourself a luddite, (I'm one too!) but when I had my dual DCOE 45 Weber d16 SOHC non-vtec Civic, the way I got it jetted to actuay MOVE OUT was by a wideband UEGO. When I tuned my SS sedan with HP Tuners, the only real way to get the VVE table looking smooth and not like jagged mountain peaks was by tuning with a wideband. Yes, you can do plug cuts in a carbed car but the only REAL way you are reading the fuel ring is by cutting the plug open after each hit. By taking the plugs out and looking at them without cutting, the only thing you can see the is the timing mark on the ground strap. I like the Analog Autometer Wideband with the the Sport Comp face. It's easier to read than the AEM digital style. I promise you it is money well spent. That car leaves like a 16 second family sedan, I KNOW there is more in it. 904s are known for rolling the sprag, ESPECIALLY with a soft leave. Possibility? The wideband is so worth it. So easy to hook up too---just weld a bung right before the collector--just make sure you have at least 12" of pipe after the bung--otherwise the open exhaust can skew readings. If you see 12.5-13:1 at full throttle, at least you KNOW you're tune up isn't miles out!
Small changes one at a time.. i took out my 72 cutlass with a 350 olds and big block J heqre last fall and we managed an 11.58 . This spring we had ignition issues, carb issues since i never set thr carb up properly for this new combo. We managed a. 11.72 spinning ar 113 which matched the mph from the fall. On top of that my wife broke her tibia and fibia the same day at rhe same time we broken the distributor gear pin. Its takeb a month ti square the car away. We will test next weekend and its also our first points bracket race.
timing and or valve timing, voltage dropping to the coil or the coil failing, bad plug leads, fuel pressure dropping, too much oil in the sump..... Thanks for the update on the fan setup, very cool idea..lol
when you were doing your first burnout. the right wheel was stopping. is the diff a single spinner? if not the clutches are slipping / burning gearbox issues. maybe
I dont know, to me it sounds like it could be a throttle linkage or cable problem/ not opening for watever reason? check your voltage at the coil with the engine running and at wot. I think this is a good project and im looking forward to watching a good pass. all the best from aus.
Check timing and make sure distributor hold down is tight. Do a full nut bolt check on everything. Could be something real simple. One bad plug wire can make a big difference.
What was the temperature of the transmission and differential? The after dark pass would have been colder lube! When you test run at the shop, you just pulled out of a warm building I used to drive a 75 Chevy Monza in the Minnesota winter with the aluminum vega 4 cylinder. I had to switch to 80/90 because it wouldn't shift until it was warmed up,if I left it in gear it wouldn't start. Oil temperature / weight rating makes a big difference...
The torque converter is too tight. It’s grabbing the engine and making it rev like a tractor. Have the converter guy loosen with a different stater. Add estimate you need around a 4400 flash to get the car moving and get it into the power.
I noticed when you did the burnout on the first pass, the wheels stopped midway through, is it possible the car is driving through the converter? RPM seemed good, just no go, It's also very possible an automatic is just no good on a S 6,, juat takes too much power to turn the pump
I think everyone on UTG's forums should sign a get well soon card for when the odds catch up with mop guy. Watching him was like playing a game of frogger.
I know very little, but instead of foot breaking you might need to be at the tree idling and then wack the gas. I do this on my truck because my rear brakes dont hold well so i cant get the rpms up much. Ill let off the brake and hit it and it kinda falls on its face. If i wack it at idle it goes, and will chirp the tires. If i air down it might even hook. This was an important test for the car which makes it no where near a bad track day if you look at it from that standpoint. Nothing broke ether.
This might be a silly question Tony, but did you put fresh fuel in it? You did say the car sat a year in the video, and stale fuel will give some of the same results. Great to see her out again!!
Makes me wonder if its a transmission problem. I had a gmc 350 4l60e and someone put a v6 trans in it and i was the same as you describe. Motor was very strong but the trans just wasn't functioning properly and just killed power.
It's an auto trans but shift it MANUALLY. (It's not winding out nearly enough in each gear). Wind It Out as high as it will rev BEFORE you shift (Go Or Blow).
My guess is fuel... somehow... old gas/ junk from the last time she ran? ethanol has me rebuilding/ replacing the carbs on so much of my stuff, annually!
Nice to see a 65 barracuda out on the track. I raced a 65 barracuda formula S. Had a balanced and blueprinted 273 and 4 speed. Had an 8 3/4 rear end housing and 4:65 ring and pinion. The car was quick. Plugs looked a bit wet to me so maybe too big of secondary jetting? I am assuming a 650 Holley ? Perhaps vent the power valve in the carb to clear that burnout stumble.
Maybe something in the diff? At 3:08 when you were doing your burnout the passenger side tire stops spinning while the drivers side appears to keep going. I thought plan Z had a" Lincoln Locker" so I don't think the wheels should be spinning independently of one another.
Definitely that engine and drive train are just "phoning it in". But UT keeps talking about how it sounds and feels off-track. AKA the "butt dyno" which is the most unreliable measuring instrument on the planet. If it wasn't, half of the automotive aftermarket would be out of business. "If you can't measure it, you can't improve it."
"They treed you man!" (j/k) I've never heard of this tactic for test and tune. Very clever! If you're already good at the light, it's a nice move to learn more about your car. (Next time at test and tune you might see me do that.)
Uncle Tony what do you know about the The 3160 Holley performance carburator ? I rebuilt mine and know is very hard to start but its not flooding . The stream of fuel is weak but the float bowls are full . Also the engine and carb set in a shed for 30 years .
The slant six is a torque engine watch the video. In the burnout box.The engine is doing 4000rpm and the tires didn't break loose. At the end of the burnout. Too much slippage. That hurts the e.t. it's revving past the powerband. Need to rethink the box. And add some more compression. 4shure
I would think there's some gum in the valvebody, that could cause the pressures to be low enough for bands to slip. If it has a loose throttle input to the transmission, that could be it too.
The first run it sounded like the trans was slow shifting. Like it was slipping or something. The second run it seemed like it just didn't want to get up and go. Sounded like the engine was trying, but almost like it left in 2nd or isn't making power. Either way will be interesting to see what you find is going on.
That slant 6 sounds like a buzzsaw! I wish I had seen Plan-Z when I had my 78 Camaro. It had a bulletproof 250 straight 6 in it. But I was young and dumb, so I didn't appreciate it as much as I should have. It wasn't fast, but reliable. And the light weight of the 6 cylinder made it handle great. I would love to find another old straight 6 Camaro. I wouldn't go completely mad like Plan-Z. But I would definitely lighten it up and make it quicker. I really miss older simpler cars. Modern vehicles are disposable appliances without a soul. Older cars are just better in every way. I don't care what people say
Haha my bud with a 68 nova and a 6 , we used to race around town and chase a buddy with a 76 Monte Carlo. The nova was rated 5hp less than the V8 in the Monte 😂 It was pretty much a neck and neck race ,whoever floored it first got the leap and held it 😂 Haha slow cars can be fun 😂
Ignition/timing problem and/or trans problem. It sounds in the second run like it's just running on steady RPM. Maybe left on second? Considering the weight, that is slow. Might make it just under 16 seconds in the 1/4. That's around 100 hp, but not 150. I believe the goal is way quicker. It sounds crisp though.
It will be the base line for Plan Z. It ran good on the first half of the drag strip. It sounds like the car run little lean on the second half of the drag strip. The fun part is fine tune the car for better performance.
Sounds to me like it bogged off the line and shifted early. Also, in the burnout box it sounded like, as you said, it was modulating power. Of course I can’t tell how much was your foot or the tune. Great to see you at the track. Can’t wait to get my own car out there. She’s in paint now.
What I noticed in the burnout box is it kept looking like the rears were not spinning together. Maybe the rear suspension setup is making the diff open up too much instead of evenly dividing the torque? Or maybe it's a trick of the camera/compression and I'm not actually seeing what I think I'm seeing.
@Jade Riley then get a heavier flex-plate. Like one of the HD versions. The inertia might help. I kept thinking this car was still a manual transmission.
I've been waiting for this, even though something is wrong I still enjoyed the video. With a 2100lb car running a 10.2 it can't be making more than stock slant 6 power. Seems like timing of some kind.
One of my cars weighs like 23-2400 and has 60-65hp max when turned up, does like a 10.5 0-60 and about a high 17 in the quarter. What a rocket. In that half a minute ,man, nobody can stop me 😂😂 .haha I felt like my car would definitely be a race with whatever he's got going on that's wrong.
Its basically in the 15s for a 1/4 mile. I dont think it ran much faster the last time it he ran it a few years ago so it seems to be more than a timing issue.
The carburetor I used which worked flawlessly come off a 1969 Chevrolet 350 camper special which was a single line double pumper I had to change the power valve to 6.5 because I had 12 inches of vacuum the cam that I bought from Clifford research was a two 90 x 2, 95 x 5 45 lift, there was a local guy that had a head shop and he put the valve springs that was good for a 600 lift cam. Another thing you can look at is your rocker shaft I had mine industrial chrome plated, and then I spent hours and hours landing his rocker shafts up Where they would CL that center line on the valve tip I still have my old stuff minus one rod and one piston. Plan Z is my favorite, so I’m glad it’s your focus! I’d be happy with a months videos of work on it & test n tune, it’s a great build 🤗

No mop guy?! That’s the problem!!

lol
Is the converter to loose?
The mopper was at his other job at the adult book store.
Tony sweeped it with his little Italian slippers all the spaghetti munchers wear
I know, I know everybody says it. A bad day racing is still a good day. Thanks for getting Plan Z to the track. Love it.
Sounds clean but pedestrian
Like it won’t rpm
Gears and converter ?
Also timing ?
Looking forward to see what you come up with

I was thinking carb r vacuum leak but your advice seems more plausible.
Dang that sucks.
I'm wondering if the torque converter is too tight for that setup. Either that or there's something in the rear-end slowing it down.
I know what's wrong with it , there's a nut lose behind the steering wheel 😂😂
Hot damn! That’s a mean sounding slant! Yeah, under load it’s struggling. I’m leaning towards fuel air delivery or something with converter/trans. Revs great when not under load, so that difference is key.

Mannn every time I see a 6 cylinder, im just glad I don't run one anymore
I wonder if it’s a problem from sitting. Fluid obstruction of some sort. Maybe trans. Maybe carb. Can’t wait to find out. You’ll get it Tony.
Nice! Working on my sl6 Ramcharger here. Could be rocker adjustment or timing. Personally, I think the carb is not right for the engine as well.
God it's good to see her back playing on the track!
UTG is the Original Old-School Cool! Love seeing Plan-Z @ the track.

Man it’s been a long time since I’ve been to that track. That was the first track I raced a car on when I was 15
Hey man, love your channel! I didn't know you were in the area.
I’m a couple hours from there now but that’s where I grew up and I have a lot of family near there

Brake drum hanging under load or just bad tires, maybe?
Needs spray and some shorter rear gears.. idk if the trans is slipping or not but it sounds like a really bad slosh box for sure!!??

Can’t wait to be part of the team!
The carb needs to be rotated 90deg, it’s been discussed before I know, but it cannot be optimized mounted like this.
Cool seeing it out of the shop. 🤟😎
In my amateur opinion, the torque converter didn't appear to be pouring the power down. The rpm never changed for half the track.
Check if valve body securing screws are loose , cam timing? Put on chassis dyno and get it close
Hey Uncle Tony. Plan Z is the reason I started watching you channel. Love sixes. Good luck

I'm an idiot but it almost seems like on a sticky track the converter isn't tightening up enough at the top. The engine seems strong though.
It's an auto trans but shift it MANUALLY. (It's not winding out nearly enough in each gear). Wind It Out as high as it will rev BEFORE you shift (Go Or Blow).

I am thinking it is a couple of things. 1. Torque converter. 2. Listening to it flutter and stumble it sounds like it has an ignition problem.
Nice seeing Buffalo valley getting some love.
My guess (?), timing issues ... Needs more gear for sure, and more converter. But if the engine wakes up, converter may be OK on the small side ...
It sounds like an automatic transmission issue. The converter ain't converting Tony
Is it the advance weights sticking in the distributor?
Well he's honest! If u mess with these enough u have nights like this.

Caught the end. Is the "hold back" possibly the transition form the carb intermediate circuit to WOT? asymmetric jets maybe?
Maybe try a heavier flywheel to help keep that rotating mass spinning fast out the hole? Also, steep gears, like a 5.13
