My understanding is he was fired half over a pay dispute, half because they REALLY wanted an excuse not to do the “Whisperers” arch anywhere near like the books, as it later makes their leader, a (former) collage feminist professor, look absolutely evil in how she thinks sex is the only way to control men in a survival situation.
The book version simply doesn’t work without Carl, but it also meant that there was no veering back to the books again if they ran out of ideas, as they had been able to do up until then.

I make the argument that the group from first season could’ve made it till the commonwealth arc. But then again, people don’t think the characters were smart enough when they proved otherwise at many points in the story.
