These Designs Were Pitched for the World Trade Center Site.

- These are more than 20 designs pitched for the World Trade Center site. Many were designed by the who's who of the architecture world of the early 2000s. While many had ideas for what should be built at ground zero it was eventually narrowed down a few proposals shown later in the video till finally Daniel Libeskinds Freedom tower was selected in 2002. A year later he would team up with David Childs of SOM to revise the design. Childs would evolve the design in 2005 to what would eventually be built with the complex sticking to Libeskinds masterplan. The Tribute of light concept would eventually be realized yearly as an art installation off site ontop of the battery park parking garage.

Do you remember all of these proposals? Which one were you hoping would get built.
Twin Towers II would’ve definitely been better and it’s such a shame it didn’t get built, The WTC in gold is also pretty interesting
Twin Towers II 100% thanks for including that in. it's my favorite design better then these current buildings they built.
I like the crystal-looking one, gives a sense of unity and togetherness. Foster and Partners’ glass Twins aren’t half bad either, in fact I prefer them over OWTC, as well as Daniel Liebskind’s original vision for the Ground Zero redesign.
The twin tower alliance was the one that topped it all off and it was the favorite one of all especially for me❤❤
Twin towers 2, if not its always been foster and partners. Its magnificent, and twin towers view in perfect lightning conditions.
Some of these are absolutely horrific. One has to seriously wonder what on earth was going through the minds of some of these architects.
I was about to say the exact same, definitely an assault on the eyes. Like, I can't believe they got paid to come up with such travesties
Yeah, we had also very weird propositions for Notre-Dame de Paris. So in the end they went with rebuilding identical.
Creativity is nice but not if you're going to ruin a landmark and skyline.
@@Arkthus You did?! I'm gonna have to check those out. I couldn't imagine anything other than a replica of Notre-Dame being in that spot! That disaster stills shocks me, couldn't believe watching that place burn live on the news- it's so iconic.
@@Arkthus I've just seen one with a swimming pool on the roof?! Wtf were they thinking 😂
Drugs, lots of drugs, one would assume.
crazy how hard it is to design a normal building
People like to pretend like they're on another level than you, and design something that no one understands like the perception of beauty with magically change in the starchitects favor.
They're not trying to design a normal building, that's the problem
That’s modern architecture for you, they’d rather build something ugly as hell than something beautiful
Because just constantly building rectangular prisms is boring as hell.
@@eletricalplugandoutlet1540 As opposed to what? Tentacles or buildings that curve every 2 floors? The art of architecture is transforming the simplist things. One trick is adding blocks on top of another.
The 9 1 1 towers got me cackling holy shit

“Guys we really really need to make sure they never forget”.
@LordBingus1 "oh they will try... but we will make sure they dont😂"
It is almost like a tribute to the terrorist attack itself instead of the victims
Imagined getting hit and killed by a car, and your tombstone is the brand logo of that car, it's that energy here.
I really believe the Twin Towers Alliance's was the best design, as if to say "you can tear us down but we will rise up taller then before"
Yeah I wish they did that. I never saw the original twin towers
Couldn’t agree more.
It's like, you can hit, but we will stand up straighter and stronger, taller and more powerful.
I think they're the worst design out of all of them tbh. It looks even more precarious than the original towers, it's like we're asking for them to do another attack.
For me it looks kinda odd with the skyline?@@space_1073

The biggest problem with one wtc is that it is not prominent and bold enough, it just doesn't stand out like the original towers did.
It's because it's missing tower two. The diamonds on the top of tower two would make everything super iconic.
I mean, it still stands out a lot because it’s so tall.
I like the new design. The 9/11 memorial is perfect, and One World Trade Center doesn’t overshadow it. One WTC respectfully stands aside from where the twin towers once stood. To me it says: “Remember what happened. And remember that we can keep going despite what happened.”
@@jrperry1611 It's not just about height, original wtc had a "different" design than surrounding buildings, it was taller had much more bulk and from certain angles it looked like it had no windows... Where this current one although not bad looking is just another glass skyscraper a bit taller than 10 of the similar next to it.
@@Sveta7 I visited New York City before, and I saw the modern world trade center from a distance. My personal opinion is that I think that the modern world trade center building is unique in its own way because of the fact that it isn’t just a giant box like most skyscrapers are, but the fact that the top of it does sort of make it look like a crystal.

True. Even: Twice as tall and golden, that feels like it would have been the Trump proposal.

Not quite, but by rough calculations based on their website with 1WTC next to them, they appear to be around 2000 feet tall. The Burj Khalifa is around 2700 feet tall, for reference.
@@antonioguglielmetti2661 I think the Trump design was the best. The new towers would have been about 100 feet taller then the originals. The foot print/width of the towers would have been increased by a few feet to keep proportion to the 6.5 to 1 ratio. Still would have left plenty of room for a proper memorial.
I think some architects forgot that it was a real city that had to live with their atrocious designs. What was Morris Adjmi even smoking when he came up with the star sprangled tower of doom?
He was smoking gunpowder prolly
Ive heard that at the time of the twin towers being built New Yorkers actually really hated them and how they looked. Not entirely sure why, I’ve never lived in a city with skyscrapers like this but I’m sure they had their reasons. Same here. I just wish they made the two towers of light a permanent part of the site because that was the most powerful post 9/11 reminder of what happened especially when you saw it nightly on the news... EVEN as a Canadian, I can sympathize and understand the desire to keep the site clean of buildings. It seems weird after a tragedy of this scale that you'd want to build anything at all near such a "mass grave" but what they did do in the end was the best solution.. Build around the OG tower footprints and make the waterfalls a feature of gathering, reflection and yes mourning...
Apparently the twin towers in light was super bad for birds. So as a consolation they only do it on the anniversary of 911. Only thing is its not on ground zero. Instead its a few blocks south which is kind of odd. @@stickynorth

As a New Yorker, who saw the towers fall and now work in the area, most of these designs are terrible to the point of farce. Anything that basically was hollow, half built, wonky in structure as to even suggest collapse or deviancy from normal operations, or came up shorter than the originals is doa and it’s a small miracle we got wtc 1 as is. And most of this goes for wtc 2 proposals as well. What the hell was “spread”? Like the splat of a jumper.
Office da is a starter design I like but yea…. Nathan mccraes first design is refreshingly monolithic…we needed something firm, strong, a statement of moving forward, not bending, twisting, appealing to peace or platitudes or hosting scars.
Well What we’ve got now is Still Disgraceful non the less, as we have to look at this imposter day&night.
I also think NO Other building should have been Built Other than the owtc and of course the Memorial as it would have made a Bigger more Serious statement of “Oneness” but nah it’s still a site for making greedy money ? Real estate ..
besides they tore down the duetche bank Building to make a “Shrine” for the St Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church which was flattened by South Tower ! DISGRACEFUL
Oh and put one of the Only Surviving Major Set Pieces, the ‘Koenig Sphere’ which was The CENTER PEICE Of the WTC and moved it around just to be placed Whare that 100+ year old church was ❕⁉️ Seriously ?!
@eshanas8915: Should put the towers back up, I know about having to fill space but why build WTC 3-7? Why not put all those departments into WTC towers. One world trade is nice but no way that substitutes for twin towers.
@@APerson-ni1gb I'm shocked you see the owtc as an imposter or something. It's a new building, it isn't trying to look like or be the old towers.

For all the complaining people do about Freedom Tower, it's way better than most of the other designs in this vid.
By far... In my opinion anyway
4:26 wtf is that
Okay who the hell even though of this
Liebeskind was chosen for a good reason. The grand majority of these designs are absolutely terrible. No sense of proportion or harmony in relation to their environment, and even worse is that they don't respect Yamasaki 's vision of human scale.
The concept of Twin Towers 2 sounded cool at least. My personal take would be similar but a bit modernized. Make twin towers but with materials inspired by One WTC. glass buildings, with similar scale and floor count (or with 90-105 floors as the sweet spot). But now that One WTC exists , I'd really love to see Foster+Partners original concept for WTC2, which is almost universally considered the most aesthetically pleasing version. Unfortunately that doesn't seem to happen due to politics and the complicated situation of tenants in nyc right now.
“Fan Made WTC Redesigns” thread on ‘Skyscraper City’ Forum ! All I can say.
Though it’s the fact that the Owtc aka Freedom Tower exists (Which it Shouldn’t) goes against The Whole Point of Why We Got Attacked in the First Place ! Let alone Disgraces All those that have ever Been IN/Through the Original WTC And have Perished ❕❗️
Also when people like Myself Have Never Even Been To NYC But Witnessed the Attacks, Will Never Get to Truly Experience Just How and What those Buildings Gave and Were Like Standing Next to Them !!
No All we have is the Depressing Memorial And Some Fake Ass Buildings surrounding And Built Over the Site ANYWAY Nevermind “dark humor” AHoles And Mindless Jokes but that’s besides the point
Yeah the only one that seemed serious and not disrespectful. Most seem to treat it like a joke to show off, like some kids designing. Seems there where no other good options.

This is one of the most fascinating videos yet because of just how many formal proposals were made, never mind their complexity and buildability... OR controversy... Never was there more feet-dragging and controversy over this site and rightly so. I do think what was built as probably the Greatest compromise in architecture known to date and that's probably a good thing that they "Mean Girled" the site by splitting it up between architects and phases so that they do look cohesive and yet distinct and with the addition of housing soon will be a truly 24-7 global district for the ages... As a journalist AND skyscraper fan seeing this project slowly come back to life over the last 20+ years since that awful day has been fascinating. It was also a cool 30th birthday to be in NYC on a Circle Line Boat Tour the day they lifted the final piece of the spire into place...
My personal choice was the skeleton version of Childs/Libeskind just before the final design was locked. I loved the open air steel lattice work which reminds me of both the Eiffel Tower and Beijing's Bird's Nest... It brings you all the height and drama of the original twins with none of the structural or safety complexity of having visitors and tenants above a certain height... Much like China has now locked into its national building codes after a few record-breaking towers with great designs but not well thought out economics or safety plans...
I looked up the context and these designs were made as part of a 2002 NYC art exhibit called “A New World Trade Center: Design Proposals” where 100 architects were asked to redesign the site and 60 made submissions.
I would have made Twin Towers but fully reflective glass and have a light system that can change for different occasions, with a special one only appearing on the anniversary of 9/11.
The only difference in placement would have been using the empty space between the original towers footprint, so they can still have a memorial with pools like today. And instead of OWTC have the museum built there.
lol the first one 😂
“Let’s submit the old design and see if they notice”

My personal pick would be the initial plan by Foster and Partners. I love how it keeps with the idea of twin towers, but it doesn't just copy the original design, it has it's own unique and sleek geometric design that gives hints to the buildings that once were. Simply beautiful.
Ngl I kinda like 5:19. But I do feel like it’s a very 2000s frutiger aero design ( I hate internet slang ) and it probably would have just looked like a outdated eyesore by now

I’d love to see the different old Chicago World Trade Center proposals at the NYC WTC site. One of them looks really similar to the OWTC too
They were much bigger than the Twins and having one bigger and taller building would’ve been better than one same-sized building like OWTC. It feels incomplete.
Also I love that version of the Tribute in Light and how it actually shines up from the footprints. I’ll never understand why they didn’t do it like that
1:12 that's horrific
Trump Twin Towers II was the the most close to best option of rebuilding this site. Not rebuilding the twins and construction ''Freedom Tower'' with other buildings was a disaster for skyline of New York.

Question. If the FAA has a height limit of 2,000 feet for skyscrapers, why was One WTC not built to that height in its final design? Sooner or later will have another "Chicago Spire" like title taken from WTC, which is dissapointing. 2000/2001 feet would also be symbolic year for the new century, year of the attack to not forget and US would have a megatall. I would've like 1776ft roof height and 2000/1ft architectural total height. Would it be that hard? Also why no open roof observatory on 2 WTC? That was the whole point of. They could've extended observatory structure in glass above those diamonds.
The first proposal should have been the replacement without any debate
