That "Aaaah, it was the press's fault" is so patronizing and completely unfair because the English media was (and continues to be) a massive consideration in such matters, that other countries (like Sweden, for example) do not have to contend with.

Honestly looking back, they treated him very badly in this show. Say what you want about him and his managerial choices but they questioned him saying some pretty standard stuff.
In another clip he said that the reason him taking Walcott to the World Cup didn't really matter was because the 23rd man on the squad is never going to make the difference. This point was then argued with ''what about Geoff Hurst and what he did at the 1966 World Cup?'', which is absolutely ridiculous as Hurst was never in a million years the last man in that squad.

If England had won just one of those penalty shootouts Sven's reign would've looked completely different, could even have been epic, who knows? Tiny margins decide so much in football at the top level... I've no doubt England would've beat the Czechs in 96 if they had just won the shootout, I would've backed that England team to beat that shithouse Argentina team in the 1990 World Cup final too... Englands history of failure at tournaments could quite easily have been a successful history but for the tiny margins.

Didn't even win our group in 2002 despite beating Argentina who were ostensibly the biggest threat in it. We were ok in 2004 and then we absolutely stunk the place out in 2006. We were dreadful in that tournament. Sven did nothing more than the absolute bare minimum and why people still wistfully look back on that 'Golden Generation' with so much fondness is beyond me.

Southgate is the only England manager who has taken penalty preparation seriously....and what a surprise...it paid off! It has never been anything other than a psychology contest and requires specialist coaching from non football experts in areas such as body language. David James 2004 shootout performance is the textbook example of EVERYTHING done completely wrong. Ricardo did everything perfectly from giving the ball to the strikers before each kick and standing tall in front of the goal line as long as possible. James retreated inside his goal and twiddled his thumbs before each kick. It took England 22 years to cotton onto the basics of penalty shoot outs...and that fact is probably the most painful thing about being an england fan over those years....the arrogance combined with ignorance of never learning from anyone else.

Retrospectively I would have gone defensively with 3 at the back. A trio of Rio Ferdinand, Sol Campbell, John Terry on paper would have done brilliantly. Sol at the Heart, Rio at the right, John on the left. They could play out from the back, launching early long balls for the runs of pacey Rooney or for Crouch to flick on to the Midfield.
You’d have to drop either Beckham or Neville. Hear me out. Three at the back means you’d need two players to provide width Ashley Cole would solve England’s no natural left footed winger. While right side would be covered by Beckham.
Heart of the center midfield would be covered by Hargreaves on the left and Gerrard on the right.
In front of them would be Lampard and Rooney.
    And up front Crouch.
    Robinson
    Ferdinand - Campbell - Terry
    Beckham - Gerrard - Hargreaves - A. Cole
    Rooney - Lampard
    Crouch
If leading and a need to shut the opposition completely, bring Carrick on for any of Gerrard, Lampard or Rooney. Whoever’s tired, has a yellow or isn’t playing well.
If need reinforcements in attack bring Owen or Joe Cole. If even more defense required bring Neville on for Beckham.
As Sir Alex Ferguson put it brilliantly, defense wins you titles and Italy showed how it was done basically.

He right about England mental frailty, not just in penalty shoot out. The fact that the teams England produced over the years for the most part weren't good enough against the top 5 or 6 teams was really the main problem. The team that's there now as of 2020 Kane & Co is probably the best in my lifetime I'm 49 years old. Only teams that can compare is 1986 Mexico Gary Lineker, Glenn hoddle and Chris Waddle team which got knocked out by Maradona hand ball and the other (ran from his own half goal) that Argentina side that went on to win the world cup and make the final 4 years later losing to Germany was incredible side, Bobby Robson said without "Maradona they dont win the game" trouble is they did have him and thay did win. Lineker was sensational in the tournament, considering he only started the last group match with England needed to win in order to progress from the group having lost to Portugal 1-0 in the opening game. If England are to win a major tournament they need to fight harder than any big team they play and no fall at the same pit falls as what happened in the semis at the last world cup, I still believe theres only maybe 2 or 3 teams
' better ' in world football but probably 5+ teams that could out smart England if the pressure was on in a big tournament.

Let me think world cup 2006: Let's say you had beaten Portugal "Figo", by the way, their golden generation was better than yours.
You still had to beat a very strong French team with Zidane and a formidable Italian team of Totti, Pirlo and Cannavaro Del Piero. A team, that knew how to play together better than any team out there. You are deluded as a football nation. It's actually quite sad, they just won't let go of something that happens 15 to 20-yeas ago. Quarter-finals is not the finals, therefore you haven't got the divine right to win anything. Just imagine this:
    Neville, Ferdinand, Terry, Cole
    Lampard, Carrick, Gerrard
    Beckham, Rooney, Owen
I think a counterstyle would fit them the best. With Cole making runs forward, Owen cutting from the right into pockets of space created by Rooney/Gerrard. Beckham slinging that ball into the box. Carrick in there to balance Lampard and Gerrard out. If you can play with Odegaard and Havertz in an Arsenal midfield with Partey or Rice or Jorginho behind them, then you can surely make this outstanding Lampard, Carrick and Gerrard midfield work.
Rooney can also drop like a false 9, with Owen taking advantage of that. With Lampard and Gerrard even being able to take advantage of that. Beckham can also drop to a midfield position when Lampard steams ahead.

In my opinion the biggest problem, we never had Left Midfielder, they try to play all Central midfielders as left-wingers....I really wished Ryan Giggs had decided to play for England instead of Wales, we would a least won one euro champion....Picture, Ryan,Beckham,& Paul S..., & Steven Gerrard in midfield..... I am defender myself but I know this simple fact, everything is lost & won in midfield.

17yrs on from this generation of players but it’s still the same issue plaguing England teams; pressure. Harry Kane with his 2nd penalty against France was like watching Chris Waddle at the 1990 World Cup. The penalty shootout against Italy at Euro 2020… how did Rashford miss? Until England sides can handle pressure better against good teams, they will always get beat in games of fine margins.

@Boring Name Lol, England barely ever make the quarter finals. Sven got there 3 times. Keegan 2000 Euros was out in the group stages. McClaren couldn't even qualify for Euros 08. Capello out in round 16 2010. Hodgson got them to the Euro quarter finals in 2012 but then 2014 couldn't get out of the group stages at the WC. Then we have Southgate. Considering all of the tournaments, Sven has had on average the most success easily. In 20 years England have at least made the quarter-finals in all tournaments only 5 times. 3 of which were Sven's team. Pretty good wouldn't you say?
