Nalbandian and Agassi, IMHO, were the two players that Federer REALLY wanted to prove himself against. You can tell in all the early matches against those two guys, Fed's intensity and need to win feels really palpable. Nalbandian was an uber talent.
Nah, in 2005 he played quite good tennis, but his movement was quite careful, not really free at all. He was just coming out of a recent, pretty bad ankle injury.
He actually totally trashed Nadal twice on hard courts. It happened in their first two h2h in back to back tournaments... I remember that they never happened to play against each other before those matches, for a pretty long time (almost 3 full seasons I think).... Which was a little bit weird, because during the same time, they were training together very often, so they obviously knew each other extremely well (and were good friends too), despite there was no record of official matches yet😅

The rhythm was so insanely high, that it made me so nervous,😂 despite the match never was really in discussion...he was playing right into Agassi's own territory, and that was worrying me so much🤣 But he was actually taking the ball even earlier than Andre (another "I'll beat you at your own game" moment), which made Agassi's win nearly impossible.

It's that backhand, so fluid and unreadable, which required particular, careful treatment even from peak Federer. But overall, Roger was the most talented ever to hold a racquet.

At his best on fast court, he could make Nadal, Murray and Djokovic look like amateurs. in fact he clearly demonstrated this more than once, at the same tourtanment. The only one to beat the big 3. It wasn't a coincidence. I would say that Nalbandian is really the only one who would have the capacity to defeat the 3 like he did. I doubt any other player would achieve this. Now, having the discipline and consistency to play like this is another point. The way Nalbandina, Sampras and Federer act is extremely difficult to maintain. It's much easier to abuse topsim and stay at the back of the court playing safe. Im a tnnis player. A huge difference is that Sampras and Federer had much more reach to serve, notoriously two of the biggest servers in history, statistically. Playing with so high lvl of risk without being able to rely on service is difficult, or maybe impossible.
