First gig in 15 years a couple of mounths back, next one coming up soon and an EP on spotify sometime during spring. I thought my dreams of being a musician was over. I can honestly say that you guys are a big part of what kept me going, and I just cant thank you enough❤.
Awesome, well done 👍 I’ve recently released my first original songs on Spotify and other streaming platforms and working up the courage to try local open mic events
TPS is not just a gear enabler. If you allow it’s concepts, approach and fun to do it’s work it can inspire actual music not just spending money on things for no good reason.
I do hope this podcast comes into existence. Some of my favourite episodes of TPS are the ones about your journeys of self-discovery with gear. Really enjoyed last weeks episode on mics board consolidation.
I hear you on the neck dive. I use a leather strap that keeps it from sliding but it’s still uncomfortable. I have a 6 lb harmony comet that was more tiring to play than my 7-and-change lb strat. The strat is balanced - weight distributed nicely over the strap. The harmony made my shoulder tired from the weight pulling on one side. I added a bigsby, balanced it, and now it feels great. And it looks cooler with the bigsby anyway! 1:28:09
I couldn't agree more about the affective qualities of a special guitar. I started on my mum's acoustic guitar from the 70s. It's still with me and it has the memories of all the good and bad of the twenty-five odd years that I have had with it. The same for the other guitars I have in possession: each one means something. One day, hopefully, they will go to my son (who is ten months old, now) who will make new memories with them. But, having music in one's life (and its manifestation through guitars) has been a beautiful privilege that is difficult to explain to someone who doesn't play an instrument.
Would love to see you guys test out an old fender reverb tank sometime , those things sound epic and I would love to hear one out through its paces and to hear the pros and cons of owning/purchasing such an item . Great show as always guys .
Great stuff fellas ! Dan looks quite content holding that SG beauty. Glad to know the head is healing. Looking forward to more Dave Gregory and the Firebird episode. Thank you Dan & Mick for all you do to share your love of all things music ! Inspiring as always ! With Gratitude - John
I had an American Original 50s Strat that had a massive neck. It sounded phenomenal, but its neck was a monstrosity. Depth at the 1st was a whopping 0.97". I decided to thin the neck down. Could be psychosomatic, but to me, that particular guitar never sounded the same.
Hey Gents, I picked up a used G3 Atom on Sunday, yesterday was my first rehearsal with it and on Friday there will be the first gig. It's such a great enabler and I just scratched the surface of it's capabilities. Looking forward to unlock more of it soon. Cheers and thank you for your work
Hello LEG END'S, I'm so glad it's the new year & you guys are back, & so glad I'm still here after a quite serious health issue before Christmas, so now looking after myself with a bit more gusto . On the plus side I am relearning to play & after much heartache & depression my playing ability is gradually getting back to somewhere tuneful!! , or though my wife & Daughter might not quite as happy as I am!!! . A special thanks to Dr Mick's mindfulness advice & Geordie impressions, it cheered me up no end. So I can't wait for another year's worth of wonderful content, you two are star's, best inventions 1, T.P.S 2, MORE T.P.S.. PEACE AND LOVE TO EVERYONE ❤❤❤.
Re: Dogs. They are the most amazing beings - I just lost my dog in October, to an awful heart disease, he was only 6 years old, had just had his 6th birthday in September. I suffer every day as a result I miss him more than anything. Used to play him lullabies with my guitar - I’ve had to stop playing guitar for months now because it’s too emotional an experience still - all this to say, dogs are so special, my dog made me a better and more loving person. I’m just hoping I can recover from his loss because it’s the hardest thing I’ve ever experienced, love of my life that dog. I completely agree with Mick on this one, dogs are #1 for me. We should all aspire to be more like dogs.
Great live guys, thank you. Totally agree with Mick on Strymon stuff. I tried the Flint and the DIG and just couldn’t gel with them at all. They both were good but definitely had that “Strymon” tone to them. Hard to explain but they weren’t for me so I sold both of them. Now using a J Rockett Mr Moto and a Boss DM-2W for verb, trem and delay and I’m very happy with that. To each his own, we’re all different and that’s a good thing. Great show! ❤ this channel Thank you for all the knowledge, inspiration, information and fun over the years. Hope you have a great year and best wishes to you both. ✌🏻
Adding to the discussion from the beginning of this video. Ive recently tried early 70s Laney 60Watt SuperGroup. And after that, I found out even Black Sabbath tones are not really distorted and gained. At volume that amp is still very clean bit with great harmonic interest. And listening back to those early Sabbath records, you found out its not much all that distorted, but so many harmonic overtones. Distorted in sense of gained and clipped. What it is not. And I would give Medal, to the sound engineer who was able to record that. I was not able to capture the room sound in any way. The sound pressure is unbeliavable.
Re Chuck Berry - I had a chat with a relative who toured him in Australia in the 80s. I expected tales of challenging talent moments, but he said no, Chuck was cool. His rider and equipment list was very specific (must be this amp, this year etc) , which Pete adhered to stringently. He reckoned Chucks rep was earned because most times the touring company rented fender m80s instead of blackface twins or whatever, and he had been ripped off enough to demand payment upfront. But if you followed his requests as outlined in his contract he was no problem to deal with.
That is good to hear! also important to say, without getting in to a big political thing, that people like me (Mick here) will never come close to understanding all the shit that generation of black musicians had to deal with. It’s unimaginable to think that they lived and worked in a time of segregation for starters… and everything that grew from that. A huge topic, but it was on my mind as I was calling Chuck an old grumpy sod. No doubt he had more than enough to be grumpy about!
My dad has always said that Chuck had been ripped off so much over the years and that is why he demanded money upfront. Also, didn't John Lennon say that if rock n roll was to be given a different name, that name would be Chuck Berry
That lines up with everything I've heard about him. A consummate professional who demands professionalism and had been stung one too many times. Venues and promoters complaining about paying up front are probably the ones who'd be stealing from him.
@@ryanthenormal , my dad also says that he charged the promter if they wanted him to go back on for an encore. He stuck to his part of the deal , X amount of time for X amount of money, if they wanted extra, they had to pay for it. Being ripped off on many occasions made him a tough businessman
Hey guys Billy from Baltimore here...If I only have 4 pedals all 9 volt is it OK to just a One Spot and daisy chain them...??? Or do I need a brick style power source..?? I'm 60 now and I'm a old school player...Two gain pedals, never stacked...A Volante and a TC ELECTRONICS version 1 Chorus..My sound is good and people always comment that it's warm yet clear..Should I just stick with what I'm using or jump on-board the 21st Century train...Thx guys.. Love the show. It's my highlight of the day ....
Hey Dan! I just saw the best definition of Jujitsu. It's defined as the gentle art of folding clothes while people are still in them. I thought you would like that.
G’day lads great start to the year glad to see Dan getting better from his surgery but I’m confused before the surgery tele all the way after surgery gibsons are on the lap come Dan lets wake up from the fog and get back to playing what we all know is the greatest guitar every conceived that being the telecaster by Leo .
1st time / long time, love the show! Im Mick's age & tho my tastes & playing are diff than yours, a lot of what is discussed on the show is universal. but one thing thats always stuck out to me - where we differ is how, as someone who never took guitar lessons, we approach songwriting. Im mostly singer-songwriter / jam band these days but can secretly whip-out any VH lick on request. with all love, it sounds weird to me that you have... a blueprint or a recipe it seems, before you even start creating a song. "you've got your I - IV - V blah blah & if you want to add a diff feel, you add a VI" (paraphrasing). where as I come up w something that sounds good & have absolutely no preferences, no obligations, no constraints, no favoritism, no clue where to go next, I let the song / riff/ feel take me... I've been writing / playing my originals for over 30 years, am I doing it wrong? :) Thanks guys
There is no wrong. But if you play me one of your songs I’ll almost guarantee it conforms in some part to standard diatonic harmony. Just because you don’t think that way doesn’t mean you’re not doing it!
For what it's worth I would buy your CDS if they were up in the TPS store. Be it Music, games, anything, I always go for physical media. Namely because royalties for purely digital media for the artist are a complete f#$@in' joke, and a cruel one at that
Cool sg , love it 😎 ❤ Got a 2019 sideway vibrola sg. Pretty cool, But the vibrola is useless. But looks awesome, and it gives its flavor to the tone I do think with some more springs in the unit i can be useable. The arm needs some help get back in a sturdy position in both ways.
Mr Hawkins has a TH-cam channel called Justin Hawkins Rides Again, so it should be fairly easy to get his attention. He's a fascinating guy with some great skills and insights.
@mick try running the Warthog on a gigrig virtual battery turned down to 6 volts…. my go to distortion sound: no matter what else I try, I always end up back there 😊
Bill Withers is one of those writers, like Tom Petty, who could make something so powerful and irresistible out of the simplest elements. Maybe there’s a lesson in there for us guitarists. But what I really wanted to say is check out the documentary called “Still Bill.” Fantastic film.
My uncle was at university in NY back in the 60's. He was carousing with his rugby squad in a bar, when he climbed up on a table and held forth with the filthiest song he knew. Upon finishing, he leapt down and, amid vigorous cheering, someone tapped him on the shoulder said, "Nice song!" He turned and beheld Paul Simon.
I got the halo when it came out and couldn't work it out without manual was happy to leave it with factory settings, only read manual last week so easy should have read it earlier.
A nice light ash strat can be tasteful but I prefer asswood for the superior bottom end. I don't find Strymon's cool myself. Too clean, too many knobs, too digital for me I think. I mean, when I really just wanna sound like Scotty Moore, any old cheap short delay on slap back is more my speed. I just want to make music not ambient soundtracks from space. I'd love a new amp-heavy video. I just love amps like nothing else. I heard you guys talking about getting some Oranges, I'd love to see a deep dive exploration of those. I'm thinking if getting a tremlord myself. I just love old british amplifiers and being in Massachusetts I'm so jealous of what you probably have in your local ebay listings. I'd love to try one of those old Selmers.
Looking at how gain levels sit within a live band context sounds like a great subject for a show. Maybe combine with how eq settings on the amp can also be a significant factor? Sorry missed the live today, but thanks for such great content.
Greatly anticipating your trip to Nashville and a visit with Uncle Larry (longtime Homeskooler here). He has a couple of serviceable guitars *wink-nudge* Of course, you’ll drop by GEP and Gruhn’s. Cheers from Alaska.
Thank GOD Dan's not selling the '65!! The best tones on this show(that I've heard) have been out of that guitar. Plus the vlog with Matt from Monty's is a gem
Idea for a show: stick some decades in a hat (50s,60s,70s,80s,90s,00s) then Dan and Mick choose 1 (or 2?) each and have to produce a ‘board of not more than 4 pedals to capture the tones of that decade.
I agree with you, Mick regarding strymon pedals I’ve just always found them to be “digital” sounding for lack of a better word even the Flint which everybody loves I pretty much replaced almost immediately upon hearing the UA golden reverberator and decided to find a harmonic trem elsewhere to go with the golden reverberator. Then when the delverb came out based on your review, I swapped the golden reverberator out for the that, which I love I still have the golden I have another amp with no reverb-a Morgan sw22 that I’m gonna use the golden reverberator with, but yeah strymon just never really did it for me. I do love the Zuma power supply and I have that on my board. 👊
I use the El Capistan tape delay and the Lex rotating speaker simulator on my board and really like the sound of both, particularly the Lex, which is the best Leslie sim, imo.
Alexander Graham Bell. He wasn't just the telephone you know. Richard Thompson does a song about all his inventions. Amongst other things he invented/developed - the telephone, the phonograph with record discs not cylinders, the basis of the tape recorder, speech therapy and lip reading for the deaf, the dehusking threshing machine, the hydrofoil, the infant respirator, the basis for television (Logie Baird was his assistant), composting toilets, the metal detector, the aircraft cockpit, tail rudder and ailerons, and he founded Science magazine, one of the first scientific journals
Always remember people, your amp has a power conditioner built in. It's all those big capacitors. The very same in a non-switching 'power conditioner'. Your wall isn't converting DC to AC, and the sine wave from the transformer is plenty linear. Power conditioners, for the most part, are a pure ripoff...unless you're powering your gig/rig from a gas generator.
Thanks, yes, I think the Kitchen specials had yellow front panels, blue vinyl and no logo, just a little sticker on the back. I had one, it picked up Radio Moscow and the local taxi radios! Before the Kitchen-Carlsbros there were Kitchen-Marshalls, very rare.
You should try a Chase Tone Secret preamp to compare to the Clinch EP pre. That would be a good head to head. The chase tone has some voicing options. I mean David Grissom uses one…
I never pulled the trigger on an SG, yet I’ve had G.A.S ever since the old ( I think) it was a Tascam personal recording ad with Gerry Leonard holding an aged white triple Hum Custom with the Lyre on it while sipping tea. Such a sexy guitar. I mean my late boxer dogs name was Angus R.I.P buddy. I always went to the Firebird. I’m going to go spend some time with a Historic this upcoming hopefully. Two Rocks ? From 06-2010 I sold many from a shop in upstate N.Y while working at a small boutique shop. Volume and guitar interaction? Try the original 100 watt Mayer ( only 10 were made) that came with the flight case in a 12 x 20 room, a killer 70s 335 and a Landgraff Mo D…. I never topped that tone again and my ears never quite recovered… We had some cool old Fender Showman’s built by Bill as well, one of which I sold to Sid McGuiness at 10 a.m on a cold snowy Saturday morning. Some of the best playing I’ve ever seen in person, nice guy. If you go to any old Letterman Tonight Show recordings you’ll see that he plays the head upside down to “ Keep it cooler man” love your work guys. 🍻
If you get Kevin Shields then with Ed O’B, Johnny Marr and Graham Coxon, you’re only missing Peter Buck and Stuart Braithwaite to round up the complete set of teenage me’s guitar heroes…
@1:00:30 is that why cats are still mostly assholes cuz dogs are the only other ones with that love feeling? I always tell my girl, the cat doesn't love me more, she just loves that I'm warmer than her :P
As I watch Dan and the Les Paul, I cant help but think more about my own desire to consolidate and get two or three truly great things instead of 30 good things. What a dilemma! Any advice from commentors is appreciated.
Hey Bob, Mick here. The thing that swung it for me was finding a couple of guitars that a) I instantly gelled with in a whole new way, and b) made the other guitars of that type seem average. Now, there’s nothing universal in that - a guitar that I love might be one that the next person dislikes. But, for you, in that moment you’ll know if it’s right. And at that point for me anyway, owning the other stuff seemed kinda pointless. It really depends on your state of mind and why you hold on to things. I’m at a point where I’m increasingly giving up attachment and identification with thought and form, which means I don’t feel emotionally attached to objects or ideas in any sort of ideological or emotional way, or as a means of self-identification. But I connect with them fully in the moment of making music. So letting stuff go is easy if you don’t use it. Erm, sorry for the essay, but that’s how I started the cull!
@@ThatPedalShow Thanks Mick! Feeling very much this way, especially trying to give up attachment. At one point, I had 3 Ibanez 80's model because I remember the ads from when I staerted playing. Read an article on Ben Harper where he said collecting was having to "listen to the cries of your guitars." LOL. All the best to you and Dan. Thanks, Bob
Why does Dan wants a new sg guitar when he only play teles 90% of the times at least on the tps show? And the same goes to Mick with strats 😆 How many guitars you both have that you dont touch them for at least a year? Its not my business dont get me rong its also not my money but guitars were made to be played. The gain video is a great idea 👍
First off, you need an alternative to the main squeeze. Something different, even if you do only play it a little bit. Second, I’m having a thin out - Mick here - to get to a small number of great instruments. Cheers!
@@ThatPedalShow ok, my faith is restored. Its got to start somewhere. No better place than guinness. I usually go off the rails and end finishing off with bushmills. ; )
If you had been ripped off and set upon as much as Chuck was it would probably screw up your world view too. Not taking up for his B.S. but racial politics, police, and the music business had it out for him.
It is a very good point. Hard to imagine for us in 2020s. I did a project on BB King once - Mick here - and being pretty ignorant of that period in American history at the time, was shocked to learn a lot of stuff that’s presumably common knowledge in the US. Black people not allowed to stay in hotels in the 50s and 60s, etc etc etc. Segregation, of course. But to a white English guy born in the 70s, it just seemed impossible that it could ever have happened. As I say, pure ignorance. So perhaps we forgive Chuck at least some grumpiness! The shit he must have had to endure is literally unimaginable to me anyway.

Oh man, I loved that Shorgaze video. Glorious fun! I actually rewatched over the Christmas break. Would love to see an updated version of that!
@1:22:20 neck dive can be remedied with a 3" or thicker strap, also helps if it's a more grippy material, less slippery.
Dan, glad you're recovering well.
I keep coming back to this vid to gawk again at that 62 SG.... man, what a thing!

American football was the same way when I was a kid. 300 lbs fat lineman turned into 400 lbs of lean death that run a4 second 40.
10 new fuzz pedals on Friday you say, hope the Hairy Squid gets a look.
Please get Scott McKeon on in 2024
Always remember people, your amp has a power conditioner built in.
That amp with the yellow fascia, on the shelf behind Dan’s left shoulder - is that a Kitchen-Carlsbro (Kitchen’s of Leeds?)
Could be…. It is a Carlsbro…. Belongs to Jack Griffiths.
Yellow and Blue. Leeds colours.
You should try a Chase Tone Secret preamp to compare to the Clinch EP pre. That would be a good head to head. The chase tone has some voicing options. I mean David Grissom uses one…
Chuck Berry was closely associated with the ES-345.
Mick who’s the Author & the two books you recommended for mental / emotional health? All the best.
Re shoegaze, Ride are another big name - Andy Bell was in Oasis (on bass) for a bit, so you probably have some connection there
If you get Kevin Shields then with Ed O’B, Johnny Marr and Graham Coxon, you’re only missing Peter Buck and Stuart Braithwaite to round up the complete set of teenage me’s guitar heroes…
My 3" Effected Leather Srrap is my favourite strap ever -- I may need another 🤔
Thank you Chris. They are indeed lovely things.
What’s the advantage of Patreon membership?
Wright brothers, check out Richard Pearce.
Oxytosin. Not sure dogs and humans have a monopoly on it though.
Petting them releases it in both of us though, likewise with cats and rats and elephants.
I love fuzz ,i want a octa fuzz so fridays episode could be dangerous ..
I want to go to Bar Lotte.
Is it possible to put a mic near the camera? When you step closer to do a close-up, the audio begins difficult to hear. Example 1h23m mark.
It would be cool if you had Euro Boy from Turbo Negro on the show.
GET KEVIN SHIELDS ON!!!!
@1:00:30 is that why cats are still mostly assholes cuz dogs are the only other ones with that love feeling? I always tell my girl, the cat doesn't love me more, she just loves that I'm warmer than her :P
I believe Chuck Berry stole his famous riff from Carl Hogan, Louis Jordans gt player (late 40s)
Friday fuzz day just in time for my birthday over the weekend? Chaps, you shouldn't have. I can sense the GAS already
Thanks, Bob
Uuuuuugggg, I missed the live
Why does Dan wants a new sg guitar when he only play teles 90% of the times at least on the tps show?
And the same goes to Mick with strats 😆
How many guitars you both have that you dont touch them for at least a year?
Its not my business dont get me rong its also not my money but guitars were made to be played.
The gain video is a great idea 👍
First off, you need an alternative to the main squeeze. Something different, even if you do only play it a little bit.
Second, I’m having a thin out - Mick here - to get to a small number of great instruments. Cheers!
Guinness isn't beer. It's a stout/porter.
My wife asks “where’s Rosie the TPS dog today”
Nicky fron NOTHING is a master of shoe gaze
There over in the UK in June..
1:12:24 beautiful
5 pints of guinness……so you were only there about 2 hours? Lol
Hahahaha! It started with Guinness!
@@ThatPedalShow ok, my faith is restored. Its got to start somewhere. No better place than guinness. I usually go off the rails and end finishing off with bushmills. ; )
Will Dan be selling Butters?
Negative captain. Sorry.
@@ThatPedalShow Baws. I'd have jumped at the chance.
bane of existence being annoying and one would choose guitar? electric guitar?
Fast forward through a fuzz video?…..What is this strange behavior you speak of? 🤔
